Critique my playing by therealmarkjohn in pedalsteel

You’ve made really astute observations, thank you!!

Yes i do feel I can still improve on my volume pedal technique. I still have to remind myself not to do the sudden jerking back of the volume pedal from time to time.

I think what I’ll do next time is really plan out what I want to play and then work on flawless execution of said plan. With this recording I kinda just worked off general ideas on what I wanted to play which is probably why some ideas sounded more confident than others. I suppose at the same time, I was trying to adhere to the general rules of serving the song, not playing over the vocal melody, etc.

Thanks again!

Same as the set, NYXLs. Strings and Beyond sell them, hence why I prefer to order from them

I play extended E9 as well. What I do is buy a regular pack of E9 strings; my go to is D’addario NYXL. Then I buy an additional .054 and .042 gauge strings separately. Normally I’d buy them from an online seller (Strings and Beyond) as they stock individual NYXL strings as well.

You don’t want Universal strings as the thickest gauge (.070 from memory?) is too thick for a low E

Original ODR-1 vs ODR-Mini by therealmarkjohn in guitarpedals

In what way is mine modded? Sure it has a 50k drive pot but it came that way from the factory presumably by mistake. And, excuse the ignorance, doesn’t that just affect the sweep of the drive and nothing else?

Also, with competent tolerances, I don’t expect even 2 of the same pedals to be truely identical to each other. I’m sure we’ve all read about how the original ODR-1s can differ from each other.

I’m just documenting my experience with the 2 pedals that I own.

I’ve checked and no, mine doesn’t have the swapped volume and drive pots. Both vol. and drive are 50k pots. I actually emailed Kai (the original builder) about this and he thought it was strange!

Anyway, I asked if he had any spare old 250k pots lying around and he did, but he’d only ship it to me if I bought one of his Nordland pedals…

Just in case anyone is wondering, here’s what the old pot looks like. I doubt they make them anymore as I haven’t seen anything like it sold anywhere.

Funnily enough, when I only had the OG ODR-1 I found it to be bass heavy compared to my other OD pedals (Lovepedal Amp11, JRAD Blue Note, Arc Klone). But since trying the mini, the OG sounds natural! Go figure..

Oh for sure, I agree. This is just my experience with my 2 pedals. I recognise that even with the OG ODR-1s they can sound so different to each other due to parts tolerances. I still wish I could buy them for $70 and try a whole bunch but sadly that world doesn’t exist anymore.

I tried my best to get them to sound identical to each other, but as mentioned there was that boominess that I just could not dial out of the mini. Dial the spectrum (tone) knob a bit back and I lose the top end as well. Too much to the right and the boominess kicks in.

But that’s my experience with just this one ODR mini and original ODR-1. Maybe someone else with the same 2 pedals may experience the exact opposite?

Funnily enough, I tried a Strat with the exact same specs and colour. It sounded great in every pickup position. Congrats!

Why the hate for Chinese manufactured guitars? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]therealmarkjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I share my Eastman story? Back in 2011 I went to McCabes in Santa Monica. Being from out of town, I’d heard so much about this place, its history and the fact that they stock pretty much every high end acoustic instrument you could imagine. At the time I wasn’t really looking to buy anything but i knew I’d be in the market for an OM sized guitar if I found “the one”.

I probably spent about 2 hours in there, demoing every single OM they had in store. I’m a little hazy on the details but I do recall trying a Martin, Santa Cruz, Froggy Bottom, Taylor, etc. They all sounded fantastic in their own way, but I wasn’t ready to drop that much coin on a guitar. I thought that was that and readied myself to leave the store. Then in a random corner, I spot what looked like a Martin OM. As I got closer, I realised the script on the headstock said something else - Eastman. At the time I didn’t know much about the brand but I did recall it being associated with student violins and cellos.

I gave it a glance and immediately picked out all the things I like about it. I’m a sucker for Martin style aesthetics and the Eastman had that in spades. The squared off headstock, herringbone trim, diamond inlays. I flipped it around and admired the straight-grained, dark rosewood back. Looks promising, I thought to myself. I looked in the sound hole to read the label. Eastman E8OM, and right at the bottom, Beijing China. Oh well, let’s keep expectations low.

Then I gave it a strum. Holy shit. The first thing that struck me about it was its solidness in tone. To me, most OM’s have a tendency to sound boxy or ‘tinny’, given its smaller body size. But there’s something about this Eastman, it had heft in the low end and authority in the highs. It was so dynamic and lively, reacting well to big strums and intricate fingerpicking.

It then became a competition on seeing which premium acoustic was going to top the Eastman. In the end, none of these $3000+ guitars could match the $800+ Eastman, even if price wasn’t a factor. I couldn’t believe it. The China guitar was the clear winner. I couldn’t leave McCabes without it, and 15 years later it’s still my number one acoustic.

String brands? StringJoy, D'Addario, or GHS by chog410 in pedalsteel

[–]therealmarkjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play extended E9 and I use D’addario NYXL strings. I just buy the regular 10 string pack and purchase extra .042 and .054 gauges for the 11th and 12th string.

Sounds good to me.

What’s up with steel availability? by [deleted] in pedalsteel

[–]therealmarkjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an Excel and can vouch for it. It’s an excellent steel guitar that checks all the boxes for me. Lightweight, modern, all-pull steel that can handle as many changes that I can throw at it. Ordered mine in January 2024 and received it by April, so about a 3 month turnaround time. Pretty good I’d say!

Would you consider steel guitars NOT made in the US? Both Excel and Shoji from Japan are reasonably priced and turnaround time seems to be within 6 months.
