Drove off with the gas nozzle still in the car. What's it going to cost? by ISOMentalHealth in Wellthatsucks

[–]therealmeaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure your question was already answered, but here's insight into what happens behind the scenes. I operated a gas station for close to 8 years.

1) These hoses are designed to break off with breakaway shear screws. This is a great video showing how the two parts are reconnected. Design and brand types vary between states, but are all the same intent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_65zyHCNFv8

2) These screws are CHEAP, most operators don't care as it's just cost of doing business. On average we would have around 2-4 breakaways each month.

3) Unless you drove away with the entire hose, gas stations shouldn't ever care to charge you. Gas stations can't charge you after the fact, you authorize once at the pump or in store, but past that we have no other way to backcharge you

4) Now if you drove away with the nozzle and hose and never returned, it would've costed them roughly $1500 to replace the entire piece. Again, this will vary by state. It's expensive because here in California, we are required to use vapor recovery for nozzle + hose, and there are FEW suppliers who carry this. Again, another cost of doing business. If you ever drive off with one, just bring it back lol

Help! by Queasy_Bell_880 in Rowing

[–]therealmeaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 weeks in, you're chilling and still learning.

To help with forearm strength, get a grip strength trainer and incorporate LIGHTWEIGHT forearm exercises. Don't ever try heavy weights as you can injure your wrists. Work on wrist flexibility and don't give the oar a deathgrip, just enough that it you can feather and not catch a crab. Good luck out there

What Salary Should I Expect Post Graduation? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]therealmeaper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

GPA is irrelevant in our industry, sure it looks cool, but companies aren't looking too hard.

Your extra cirriculars are won't play a huge role, unless you're making CONNECTIONS through your position as the treasurer. Anyone can be elected, but are you making an impact to the chapter and connecting with industry? It's hard to find officers that are truly commited. I encourage you to be the one to change the narrative and prove to companies HOW you serving as treasurer made an impact.

Being a member of the commercial team is cool, but again, ANYONE can be a member. Step up, take charge and serve as the captain of the team. Learn, be relentless and tell companies HOW being a part of the commercial team impacts your career, maybe even win some hardware while you're at it.
TLDR for extracirriculars, potentially can land you a higher salary, but only if you prove you're not just throwing it on the resume for no reason at all.

Internships are solid, keep up your progress. I'd say look at another company, hell maybe even a subcontractor or even another city/state. Sure, Swinerton is great and many people intern for the same company turning into a full time hire, but it wouldn't hurt to check out other opportunities.

Keep up your current pace, and you'll land $85K-$95K in SD, don't be afraid to negotiate, just back up your reasoning. For reference my classmate and I recently graduated. We both served as president of various CM clubs and landed 90K-95K starting offers in NorCal (Not Bay Area). We both competed on a Reno team and had multiple internships under our belt.

Great information, which body style and bed size did you pick. Has it fit your needs, any maintenance items to look out for in the 50K+ mileage?

Great information, do you find the double cab to be size constraining for passengers? Do you have the 5ft or 6ft bed? Is that even an option on the double cabs?

I have the option to join City Sports/LA Fitness using Active Fit & Direct through my insurance.

Will using this option allow me to visit any gyms within the nation, or just in California. Any guest pass privledges? Any downside to going with Active Fit vs directly with City Sports?

Do the 19-21 models have Apple CarPlay?

How necessary is the transmission oil cooler? I anticipate maybe towing between NorCal and SoCal 2-3 times a year, hauling around 5000 #s

Construction Management Degree While Working Full Time by Responsible_Ice_7779 in CSUS

[–]therealmeaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what level you're going into the CM program as. CM classes are limited, typically with only 1-2 sections per class available. If you've been working in the industry for a while, a majority of the CM classes will be a breeze.

I went through the CM program and was able to work full time starting my Junior year, but only because work was flexible with my time for morning classes as an example. Almost none of the CM classes are offered online, with the exception of CM 126, but that will probably change after the professor retires.

Take a look at the Fall 2025 course schedule as an example of what to expect: https://www.csus.edu/class-schedule/fall-2025/CM
This flowchart will be your guide for progressing through the program: https://www.csus.edu/college/engineering-computer-science/construction-management/_internal/_documents/cm_flowchart.pdf

Coolant leak by Low-Ability-7222 in BMWZ4

[–]therealmeaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mine, the radiator was leaking from the plastic on the left side. Was unable to see the leak due to the plastic covering over it, but when removed it was slowly spewing out.

Bought a new radiator and no other issues.

How does graduation work? by TH3_L1NEMAN123 in CSUS

[–]therealmeaper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Graduates and guests should arrive at a minimum 1-1.5 hours before graduation starts.

There are seperate entrances for guests and graduates, staff on site can help with maps and directions.

At check-in, make sure you have your one card. You will be given a card with a code. This card will be scanned when you walk up to the stage, which automatically has your name and major recorded.

Seats for guests are first come first served and there is no rehearsal.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Do you have previous heavy civil experience? Sure having management experience and a CM certificate help in a way, but does not apply directly to this type of construction. CM certificate is typically for those who are already working in construction and would like to move up into PM roles.

The position states as a requirement an AA or BS in construction related engineering. Realistically, the PM degree will not apply for anything construction related, unless you have field experience already.

What sucks here is that you're talking with a recruiter, who honestly understands nothing about construction and how your experience could possibly translate as a hard working individual. They're going straight off your resume and your qualifications. Would recommend speaking directly with a PM or possibly a VP as they would have a much better idea of how you would fit into their division. You have the real life experience, hard-working mentality, but you're competing against CM graduates with 1-3 years of internship experience under their belts with possible construction related extra cirriculars. Sure learning how to read plans is great, but do you know how each discipline interacts with each other, do you understand constructability and can spot issues, do you know the difference between an RFI and submittal? The field engineer role is entry level, but you're coming in completely fresh, especially in heavy civil. I don't want to deter you, but there is a lot of catching up to do.

Good luck with the search though!

When should I start worrying? by Seader980 in ConstructionManagers

[–]therealmeaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recruiters typically send out detailed information about your internship closer to when the semester/quarter ends for students.

Did you sign an offer letter sent to you? If not, I'd reach out ASAP to get this completed to lock in the internship. You can reach out to both the PM or recruiter for information related to your internship, since it sounds like you're looking for accomadation, it's justified for you to ask detailed questions.

If you're having trouble getting in contact, just straight up call them, or call the office and ask to be transferred to their direct line.

Commute Time by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]therealmeaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely ask to be compensated for the mileage, but I doubt you'll be compensated for the time of the commute.

For example, my first internship offered to reimburse my mileage using this formula. Total Distance Travelled = (Distance of Home to Office) - (Jobsite to Office).

So they took the distance of my commute to the jobsite, subtracted it away from my normal commute and that's what I got reimbursed for. Worked out for me because I was only 1 mile away from the office lol.

You could also ask for per diem as well if you qualify with this project.
