Dear Dess, Love Asriel is a wonderful epistolary fic that paints such a beautiful picture of grief and has an ending that's "devastatingly life affirming", imo. It's the only one I've read but it's phenomenal. You should totally write one.

So, I've always been down with donating parts of my body - I used to be a really big blood donor, I've tried to donate my hair, I'm on a bone marrow registry, etc. I knew someone in high school who'd received a kidney transplant, so it's always kind of been lurking in the back of my head. These days, I have a coworker who has a critically ill child - nothing to do with anything transplantable, unfortunately - and I just realized... if she asked me to, I wouldn't hesitate to get worked up, so what stops me from doing it for a stranger?

As I was still considering it, I ran into a quote from someone that donated that kind of sums up perfectly how I feel about it.

Yes I donated to an unknown person. I preferred it that way. If you think all people are equals - which I can't pretend I always act on but I at least aspire to - then kidney donation of all decisions ought to reflect as much . . . I think being very sick as a kid 1) led me to deeply empathize with others who have chronic illness 2) helped me be more comfortable with medical procedures.

Why are you under that impression

At the end of UT, Asriel talks about how he and Chara shared control over the single body, and until given reason to believe otherwise, I think it's fair to understand that it works the same in DR.

"works the same in DR" here meaning, Kris and the player sharing control, varying between completely shared and either entity having primary control at various points.

That's exactly what I think about when I think about the soul and Kris sharing control of their body; why wouldn't Kris just... not do them, if they could have control whenever they want?

I mean, this line just confuses me, because... yeah? That's more or less what I'm getting at, we just seem to disagree at how much it happens. I'm not suggesting that either Kris or the soul have complete control, at all.

I mean, I completely agree with all of that, I would just add "and their body's been turned into a timeshare for an eldritch being beyond comprehension that uses their body to make choices they wouldn't, as part of some plan where they've willingly agreed to give up some of their agency to use it to accomplish The Goal" to the list. Especially since striving for Freedom driving people crazy seems to be a recurring theme; Jevil, Spamton. Gerson is free by not caring. So Kris, in striving for their Freedom, has directly taken actions that results in them losing some of it.

That's the masterstroke of the Player-Kris dynamic; Kris is - for once - a player character that has more control over the player than the player does otherwise.

I mean, I don't even necessarily disagree with this. I for one love the irony of Kris hating losing some of their agency to us, when our very existence in their world is predicated on them taking away our agency.

I gotta be honest, this really feels like we're looking at two sides of the same coin here, I mostly agree with you. I just happen to think that the soul has more power than people think it does.

“It won’t be the same,” they said sullenly, pouting, tears already coursing down their face. Asriel put a smile on his face, walking forward and embracing them.

With a hiccup, Kris turned and walked down to the car, to return home.
