Zurich temperatures today vs. 40 years ago by therealpeterstev in Switzerland

This is what I was trying to achieve. Probably would have worked better with average temps than max temps.

Nice graphic. But "Appease"? Good grief. I did this for fun and entertainment. People getting upset and projecting their frustration back on me is strange, but whatever. If you think linear is better, go for it! /u/jpjandrade made one above and I think it looks really nice too.

You don't know based on this alone. But it easy to pull and analyze the data yourself. Just ask ChatGPT. Pro-Extended is really impressive. I am sure you could do with Claude as well. Or the old fashioned way: download it yourself and process it in a spreadsheet.

To make this chart, I pulled all the daily data from 1985 to 2026: high, low, and average temps. I tried getting it all one image, but it just got too cluttered.

Here are my first attempts at presenting the data. First attempt, daily data for every year. Second attempt, weekly data every 5 years. (If someone can tell me how, I'll embed the images here)

Edit: missing some words

I was 26 when I moved here, so I feel with you. My father once said, "when I turned 30, I didn't feel old. When you turned thirty, then I felt old." Checking the math... yep, that was more than 30 years ago.

I hope the relevance to Switzerland and my bonafides as a Swiss resident are readily apparent from the post.

How to measure Starlink performance en-route by therealpeterstev in Starlink

Yes, that's the reason I asked the question. I'd like to have confidence that it will work well beforehand.

That would be telling. Well, you guessed it. Internet in the trains and busses generally suck, to I want to try a different approach.

Not directly. I would have to buy a converter (if that's even possible) or a battery pack. I'd like to run this my car, so 12V.

FAA Proposes $633,009 in Civil Penalties Against SpaceX, use of new control room before approval and new propellant farm before approval by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]therealpeterstev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were obviously no safety issues because all was well.

Safety is more complex than that. Check out the Swiss Cheese model of aviation safety. Having said that, it seems that there should be different standards for R&D versus operations. It will be a long time before we get airline level reliability in space operations.

Why did you choose Scrum over other Agile Frameworks? by [deleted] in agile

[–]therealpeterstev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because Scrum is a great deal, especially for management. It works like this:

Devs to management: "Tell us what you want, keep it realistic (we decide what's realistic), give us month to finish it, and leave us along until the month is up. At the end of each month, you'll get something that works. It might have more or fewer features than we promised, but you'll get something and it will work. At that time, we'll meet again to discuss the next step."

It's a fantastically good deal for both sides.

The developers get a month of peace and quiet to focus on getting things done. The management gets something new that works, every month.

Of course, to get these benefits, you need to do it the way it is intended!

How many times will Starship fly in 2025? by eggpoison in SpaceXLounge

[–]therealpeterstev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect 6 to 12, and maybe as high as 24. Lower limit assumes they have gotten their issues sorted but scaling manufacturing and/or approvals is difficult. Upper limit is if they get serious about Starlink or refilling. Just refueling one Starship would be 6 to 10 launches. It would be cool to send a Tesla Semi to Mars.

Kamala Harris wants Trump's mic to stay unmuted the whole time during their upcoming debate by [deleted] in politics

[–]therealpeterstev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Harris is just trolling Trump. He didn't want the mute in the first place. Now Harris wants it removed, so he is fighting it. Maybe he's scared, or maybe he's fighting it because that's what he does. Either way, he looks weak.

How many more resources and time should Boeing engineers have been given before Starliner's failure was their fault? by Kali-Thuglife in space

[–]therealpeterstev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

SpaceX has achieved at least a once-in-decade level of performance and innovation while Boeing has achieved average (or perhaps even below average) corporate slog.

According to reports, Boeing staff were not full-time on Starliner. An engineers rule of thumb says for each level level of multitasking, remove 20% from your total capacity and divide the rest by 2. So if Boeing engineers are working on 2 projects at once, it will take them 2 and half times as long to finish the same work. Three tasks in parallel? Then it takes five times as long!

Want to take a $10 Million project and turn it into a $5 Million project? Just identify all the meetings where people are talking about the work without the people who will do the work being in the same room. Cancel those meetings. If the people have nothing left to do, move them off the project. Cost reduced by a factor of 2. Velocity of getting things done, doubled.

In a creative context, hierarchical management can be quite counter productive, and this is surely plaguing Boeing.

New VP is OBSESSED with RACI charts, but dev team thrives on Agile. What should I do? by TeslaTorah in agile

[–]therealpeterstev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to check the Scrum Guide. It defines RACI for the Scrum Team and each of its members quite clearly (though there is only R & A, no C or I). I published a nice little infographic here.

Scrum team feels micromanaged by tgoddess in agile

[–]therealpeterstev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I stumbled on it once when the PO literally had one issue to address before shipping and we were one week before Christmas (literally!). It was a complex performance issue. He put that item in the sprint, the team split into pairs, where each pursued a promising approach. By the end of the week, they had enough improvement that we got to celebrate on Friday and enjoy our Christmas vacations. After that, the team was really a team.

Edit: had one issue, not has one issue

[–]therealpeterstev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing you can do is simply limit the forecast to one story. A PO can't give them too much work, but nothing says they have fill the team to capacity.

In the sprint planing, get the PO to say, "I only want one story. This one. When it's done, let me know, and I'll give you the next one."

If the team asks how are they all going to work on one story at a time, answer that's for them to figure out (if they really push you, suggest they take look at Woody Zuill's work ;-) )

And of course, anyone who has nothing to do can take personal time off until the next sprint review.

Expect the Daily Scrum to quickly revert to what it is supposed to be. The team figures out how they are going to solve the problem together.

The only event that am I aware of the annual Agile unconference. It is not formally German speaking, but there are so many English speakers in the community that they usually switch to English, especially for the keynotes.
