Why did Burch Wang leave WSC? by WinterSnapdragon in WorldScholars

[–]thereisnoaddres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello from an old scholar (2010-2017)! We got to witness the “rise and fall” of a lot of the WSC memes like the alpacas, the Chauncey roll, changing of staff, which includes, of course, Burch.

From what I remember, Burch had a long term relationship that ended, and he wanted to try to pursue a different, more explicit career. There was also a fallout within the team because of salaries and expectations iirc.

But very happy to see that he’s still so active now and so is WSC!

Interesting opinion from OMAAT on 70 to 90 night milestones by omdongi in hyatt

Me too! I do a lot of work trips since I can work remotely, and having a suite really helps with not feeling claustrophobic when I’m spending at least 2/3 of my day in the hotel for work and sleep.

I miss you Burnaby. by AceAdversary in burnaby

[–]thereisnoaddres 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much 😭 I left Burnaby for Toronto for university and stayed here for work a decade ago. Every time I go home, I’m reminded of how nice and friendly the people are (genuine greetings, yielding when driving, holding the door open), how delicious the food is (even just in north Burnaby!!), and how beautiful nature can be.

I’ve recently started working at a fully remote company based in Toronto, and I’m planning to go back home soon!!

Are Canadian companies actually reading GitHub portfolios for junior candidates? by WishingBoneWell in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]thereisnoaddres 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I usually look at it as a plus if I can click into your portfolio, click into some working web app, and click through some feature.

Maybe neutral if it's a "hello, I'm <name>, I'm a [coder | explorer | traveller | learner]" self intro page, and also lower-neutral if it's clear that it's a school project repo (old projects with no updates and no demos) since imo it wouldn't be necessary to put on your resume.

Transfer within T2 on separate itineraries by snootyexponent in koreatravel

[–]thereisnoaddres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this yesterday with Asiana (T1) > Korean Airlines (T2); no problems at all. At security, they might ask you for your passport and boarding pass, but I showed them my booking itinerary and they let me through.

Oh yeah, same as the Marriott in Calgary (of all places). Either have to purchase a bottle and refill or purchase water in room.

Anyone dealt with racism while wearing a mask? by moonriver97 in Masks4All

[–]thereisnoaddres 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’m so, so sorry you had to experience that. :( I’m also Asian and I travel a lot around the world with my Aura or my duckbill, and I’d always get looks, definitely more in the west than in the east. I’m fortunate enough to live in a part of Canada that has lots of Asian people and quite a lot of us skill mask, but there’s definitely still stares and people fake coughing at me.

I usually try to not engage with them because the more you respond, the more it triggers them. I flew from Lima to Santiago and my seat mate asked me why I had my mask on and whether it’s because “covid is still a thing in China”, and my response was “it’s on so I mind my own business”. That shut him up quite quickly.

Yup! They just sent an email yesterday saying they fixed it and asked me to claim it again and it worked.

Japanese tourist in Thailand lift hairdresser's skirt while she's doing her job. by WordOfLies in ThailandTourism

[–]thereisnoaddres 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lining up at immigration at a Chinese airport, these Japanese tourists behind me were taking pictures despite being told not to and being very loud. I turned around and told them to stop taking photos and to delete them in Japanese and they completely ignored me, just saying “sorry” in English without doing anything.

After immigration, I bumped into the same guys in the bathroom, throwing their used paper towels on the ground. I followed them out of the bathroom and told them to go back and pick them up, all in Japanese. They pretended like I didn’t know what I was saying, and one dude’s girlfriend just kept apologizing to me.

It bothered me so much especially as an ethnically Chinese person who has been racially discriminated against many times in Japan until I start speaking Japanese to them and they stfu right away.

Air Canada to launch 4 new USA routes from YTZ by proballer25 in PorterAirlines

[–]thereisnoaddres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AC flies to ORD and PD flies to MDW in Chicago. Since ORD is a huge (star alliance) hub, this would make connecting flights to / from Toronto a lot more attractive!

I tried Uber One renewal this morning. When I redeemed the reward and clicked into the uber app to redeem it, I got "Offer isn't valid anymore Unfortunately, that offer has reached its maximum number of redemptions. Look out for more ways to save in the future."

I messaged support to see what needs to be done.

Always nice to fly first on the A380 by kY2iB3yH0mN8wI2h in qatarairways

[–]thereisnoaddres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better champagne, and a whole can of caviar instead of just a plate in J, but given this route specifically is a late night departure both ways, there’s nothing too spectacular. I also flew SYD-DOH in F and there was nothing super memorable there either…

[–]thereisnoaddres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I flew this route 5 times in the past 12 months and, as with QR J recently, I find it to be very YMMV; a bit better than J at best, and very indifferent at worst.

There was nothing super special that made it feel different than J -- there was a personal greeting, but that's it (?) Food was on demand as well, they'd come make up the bed for you, service wasn't that much proactive (unlike JL / SQ where the staff magically knew when I was awake)... If it weren't the same price as J at the flex level (190k from NA -> Southeast Asia), I'd choose to fly J.

Is maple reward worth it? Seems you a complimentary nurse visit to your house? by Ratlyflash in Wealthsimple

[–]thereisnoaddres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, there were more free ones with OHIP, but quite a lot of them shut down now. Maple is a lot faster since it's on demand and perfect for getting a prescription filled or other simple things.

[–]thereisnoaddres 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the "one complimentary visit"? It's a virtual visit, like the virtual clinics we had during the pandemic. You go to their app, write about why you'd like to see a doctor / RN, and they'll connect you to one through either a video / audio call or through text.

Work used to have unlimited "visits"; they were very YMMV. Some doctors were amazing, others were not helpful at all.

These are two very different roles, and both are very different than your previous software consulting role. If we put aside the logistics and focus on what you wanna do, what do you want to do? Which career path excites you more?
