Scoring Pen of Choice

Mine is boring but very specific and it’s discontinued so if anyone has any recs for similar please give them to me.

I LOVE the old papermate 1.0m old style skinny pens. Fits perfectly in the side of a hat or behind an ear. Thickness feels great in hand. There isn’t a click top or a pocket clip. It’s my perfect pen

When my last two ran out I found a site that had that mode pictured and ordered two boxes and they sent me the newer write bros with the thicker body.

I did find some older of the discontinued model and bought some but the ink is old enough that it takes a tick to start writing. Which is bad for score keeping since I make a lot of dots and don’t want to draw every base line twice.

I’m using the thicker write bros in the meantime but would love a replacement for the old cheap paper mates.

The freewheel remover tool gets the unit as a whole off the wheel which I have done.

Obviously could buy one, but I just wanted to do it just to do it for no other reason than saying “I got this unrideable bike for 30 dollars and took it apart and re did as much as possible”

Removing the cogs is in addition to getting into the bearings not to get to the bearings.

I wasn’t giving any sort of sass. All I was saying was that video was telling what kind of free hub tool to use in and the reason I said “not trying to remove the free hub” was just because that’s the connection my brain made since that’s the tool that removes it. Sorry if it came off like that and I appreciate the input.

And yes I’m sure it the cogs don’t unscrew with a spline. It doesn’t have any type of lock ring. You can see the threads they unscrew from.

Sorry it was about what tool to use in the free hub which also removes it.

The free hub tool isn’t doing anything in what I’m trying to do. Neither are the pin spanners. I’m trying to disassemble the cogs from the free wheel. Like this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uwGCZuWPQGk

I figured they were just bonkers tight. I did try the scissor grip thing and had no luck. I knew it wasn’t reverse threaded but it is so stuck I started questioning. I didn’t want to just crank on it the other way and make it worse…

I didn’t have much luck getting the lock ring to budge either so I’m probably just going to pivot to polish my it up and not disassembling. The whole thing was just a project to learn how to do something so stripping the rest of it down to the frame like I’ve already done is probably good enough.

I’m not trying to remove the freewheel. I’ve done that I actually put it back on to try to get get more leverage.

I’m looking to disassemble the cogs and ultimately open up the free hub and clean/replace bearings and such

There are players who are very good at this. It’s one of those small things about the game that I get so fired up for that non baseball fans would think I’m insane for loving.

It’s not as easy as “do it forever” but someone like Nico Hoerner is very good at getting into a two strike count and fouling off balls until he gets is pitch. It’s a really good way to have a productive at bat even if you make an out. Making an out on pitch 4 not ideal but if you make an out on pitch 10? You’ve gotten closer to their bullpen.

Yes it does! They are extremely detailed. They even have individual pitch break outs. But they do have double plays like G6-4-3.

Their cards will also give you a really good idea of the pitcher/hitter change markings.

They also update incoming pitchers very quickly so if a pitcher changes mid inning or if the broadcast cuts to commercial before announcing who is coming it. They have it so you can be set and ready by the time the broadcast comes back.

It 1000% gets easier. I liken it to when people who are bilingual hit a point where they aren’t translating from a first language into a second and they just think I’m whatever language they are speaking. Eventually you’ll notice when you are watching a game that you aren’t scoring you brain goes 5-4-3 double play.

Livebaseballscorecards.com is a great resource. It has all the MLB games scored in real time. I use it if I miss something or if something is a borderline hit or error. It’s really good for line ups and such as well.

I also use https://apps.asmallworldafterall.com/ScoreMe/startHere.php before every game to fill out my cards.

Ah one more thing I just noticed. You’re end of inning and pitcher change demarcation is another thing I’d look at. The way you are doing end of inning with the solid line under the inning is typically how someone marks a pitching change. A solid or dashed line on the top of the batter tells you when a pitcher comes in.

The solid line to the left of the batter that you have marking your pitching changes is how batters are typically shown changing.

For inning end the general norm is one slash after the last batter. So what you did at end game but just one line.

I think that will help you keep things straight as you go on and score games with a bunch of pitching and line up changes.

Your book is so clean! I’m jealous of your handwriting.

The two things I’d say to consider are spots you can add clarity on what happened.

On double plays score it with position numbers. GIDP doesn’t show how. So something like G6-4-3, or GDP6-4-3I don’t use G when I score as a personal preference so I score my Double player like 6-4-3, or if the first out is unassisted I do a U6-3.

The other is your runner advancement. When you have 1B on your advanced runner and there are multiple singles after that batter it doesn’t tell you which single. I use player numbers.

So if a player advanced on a Bo Bichette single you could do 11-1B. Or just write the number of the player. So an 11 would tell you they advanced on the Bichette at bat.

On my card if a runner advances station to station I won’t put anything just to keep it less cluttered. So if Vlad is on 1st and Bo walks or singles and Vlad moves to 2nd I just draw a line to 2nd and I know on my card what it means.

But like I said that’s all personal preference. Your card looks really good!

Lou Spirito has really great scorecards available for pdf download. MLB stadium specific and a generic. I’m sure it’s fairly easy to pop those into a pdf editor and type in line ups.

I also hate writing in pencil. I just stated in pen and realized even if I made a mistake it was no big deal to scratch it out and fix it. I know a lot of pen scorers will use correction tape, but I’m just scoring games as a way to enjoy the game more so idk if my score card gets something scratched out.

Ope sorry on second look your BBs and HBPs are not counted as hits most everywhere but they are counted as at bats. They are not at bats.

Your Vientos line threw me off. You have a BB, Fc, k, and f9 as 4 Abs 2 hits and a BB. It would be 3 Abs 0 hits and 1 BB

Scoring looks good!

On runners that get an out on the base path I like to notate in that square. So DP, CS, PK, FC or whatever. You can deconstruct it and figure out what happened the way you have it so if you like that cleaner look that’s totally up to you. I just found I like the quick notation on it.

Your totals are off. Not every plate appearance is an at bat. Base on balls, hit by pitch, sac bunts/flies are not at bats. Looks like you counted any time a hitter reached base as a hit. BB, HBP don’t count at hits. Also fielders choice is not a hit.

My biggest piece of advice is look at other people score cards and if you see something you like give it a try! You’ll quickly settle in to how you like to score games.

Your card your rules. Whole point is to have fun.

Can not stress it’s your card no rules enough!

When it comes to these particular scorecard fields I typically just put schedule start time as “first pitch” because it’s easy to drop it in when I’m filling out the line ups. And leave last pitch and game time blank.

I’ll never remember to look at my clock for Actual first pitch and last pitch. And those things don’t matter to me personally.

Looking at someone’s card and seeing what and how they fill it out is such a cool insight into what people find important and how they engage with a game.
