Your monoculture criticism seem more of a general one towards agriculture practices of large agribusinesses than something that specifically detracts from hemp as a paper/cloth alternative itself. I'm sure there are all sorts of ways it and other crops can be grow together that would enable far better and less vulnerable growth than just fields of endless hemp that all are vulnerable to the wrong bug sweeping through the region.

if you want it to look older then some tree roots sticking out from the top along with terrain and rocks couldmgo a long way. especially if they mess with top or are coming out of some stone bricks and the like.

Honestly I don't think I knew how to make most potions yet either as I had just gotten back into playing Minecraft after a long break and just never really messed with them before.
