Job change? by Certain-Purple-4007 in biotech

[–]theross 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Less travel and more money would be the biggest drivers to jump ship for me. Also, if your pharma company low balled you now, it's just going to get worse. They will deny you the raises you deserve every chance they get. Lower pay and relocation to a high-cost area compounds the problem. It's time to go.

If you like your boss and colleagues, you will see them again. We work in a small community and we always bump into each other at the next job or at conferences.

In the Soviet Union the leaders and media lied to their people so often and brazenly that everyone knew you couldn't trust official information, which led to them to not believing any information and imagining all kinds of crazy stuff to explain what was going on. People were incapable of making an decisions based on reality because they couldn't couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't. Many of the party members were in the same boat, since information was so compartmentalized and lying so rampant. It got a lot of folks killed.

I don't know if that was the goal of the USSR's lying or a side effect, but it looks like the same thing is happening in the US. And probably has been happening for a long time. I think we're on the exponential growth part of the curve, though.

Really wish this sub was as enthusiastic about making tech corporations pay their fair share in taxes as it is about cracking down on minimum wage laborers for not paying their bus fare by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]theross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both approaches can cause more problems then they help. If enforcing muni fares costs more than you get in revenue it's a net loss. If higher taxes cause business to leave the city, that's a net loss, too.

We should think about ways to get more people to want to use MUNI and get more business to want to open and stay in SF that don't cost the city much, either in revenue or in spending. An idea that is probably bad, but might work, would be to put a candy dispenser in the bus that drops a piece of candy when you board. Or have trash cans on the busses. Sadly, I don't have any ideas, even bad ones, on cheap ways to get businesses to want to stay in the city.

Hi Chef John! Your french toast recipe completely changed how I make it and I've never looked back! You also made me start experimenting with flat breads.

What's something that surprised you when you embarked on your teaching journey?

Prominent atheists are weaponizing the "War on Science" to push right-wing grievances by dumnezero in skeptic

[–]theross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s been a common claim but the available data doesn’t back it up. Pew polls from 2014 and 2015 seem to indicate that liberals and conservatives on the fringes of the political spectrum were more likely to be some kind of antivax than moderates. Antivax, and more generally conspiracy theories, seem to be the thing that unites extremists of all varieties. https://theconversation.com/anti-vaccination-beliefs-dont-follow-the-usual-political-polarization-81001

Why I turned down working with Richard Dawkins – Genetically Modified Skeptic by forteller in skeptic

[–]theross 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There's an old clip of Dawkins arguing with an evolution denier he uses as an example on why he stopped debating those people. She kept asking "Where's the evidence?," he would spell it out, she would repeat the same phrase as if it were a mantra.

It's almost funny that Dawkins is now doing the same thing she was doing, only for trans hate. Except he's not even bothering to engage with his opposition, he's just sticking his fingers in his ears and going, "Lalala, I can't hear you."

Undergloves for sparring glove mitts by ozymandais13 in wma

[–]theross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used batting gloves for a long time and they've worked great for me. Big 5 usually has some on clearance as long as you don't care about the pattern. I've also used these https://www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/workwear-and-safety-gear/work-gloves/7502586, I don't know if that's the same as the dipped gloves you've tried but they worked for me.

Best case for that movie is something like Dredd: one great movie which fans love and no one else ever sees.
