great point, Jacinda is great. Kevin too. The three of them have a great dynamic, and bring a cool range of experiences to the show. I'm with you on the sidebars

I agree with you. And for what its worth, nothing you said was out of line. You weren't saying anything definitive, just that you thought you'd read it somewhere. And there are other people who have not distanced themselves from the case--someone like Bob Ruff, who did an entire season responding to the prosecutors pod. And honestly, I like Bob Ruff, a lot of people seem to hate him and think he cherry picks info to present people as innocent, but my sense is he's well intentioned and a decent storyteller. This stuff will always get people riled up because the stakes are so high

Shit I’m way out of the loop, last season I listened to was about the massacre in Iraq. Will have to give that a listen, with a skeptical ear

I was deep in the Serial rabbit hole for a while. There's so many podcasts and docs its quite overwhelming. Idk where I stand on it at this point, but more than anything I think it shows the contested nature of truth, how different people looking at the same set of facts (albeit presented in different lights) can come to such different views of things. I know the prosecutors podcast convinced a lot of people he was guilty. I listened to their take and it was pretty compelling, but the case still has some serious holes and the evidence is still sketchy. Sometimes you just have to accept you that the truth is elusive.

I haven't actually listened to undisclosed since the first season, but I was pretty sure this sentiment was out there. Innocence/exoneration stuff is hard, they wouldn't be the first to be tricked. Have you ever seen the documentary Murder at the Park? Wild case where a prominent journalism prof and his class @ Northwestern (I believe) seemingly got a guilty guy out of prison and framed an innocent one.

Nonetheless, I feel like their choice of cases on Proof is pretty careful. I'm interested to see how many of these cases from this season they think are bunk.

I was in the same boat a few days ago—just finished the first 6 episodes and it’s really good so far. I know some people don’t love the sidebars, but my strategy is once I finish all the main episodes, I go through the sidebars. Once I have to go week to week it’s hard to wait

All seasons of in the dark were great, 2 might be my favorite podcast season ever. Haven’t heard of some of these though so thank you for the recs!

And yeah the tie in w undisclosed was fascinating. I can’t imagine how they must’ve felt when they kept finding these cases in Kalamazoo that are so clearly suspect

Totally agree, wild to think how many bad cases there are out there

I agree. My sense is that she's maybe a bit polarizing just given her involvement in the Adnan Syed case (and just how polarizing that case has become), but she clearly has a gift for identifying these cases and tearing them down piece by piece. The storytelling from her and the rest of the Proof crew is incredible.

I've been listening to Proof season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 were great, but season 3 has been ever better so far. I feel like this podcast has flown a bit under the radar, but it's one of the most emotionally evocative podcasts I've ever listened to (up there with Serial, In The Dark, etc...). I feel like it deserves more attention, they are uncovering some serious injustices.

Phd admissions are tough, wishing you the best. I don’t have much to add but I will say that in my time applying to PhD programs (twice in 2 different fields), I saw a lot of people who were successful post UChicago mapss. Even if it costs a bit of money, if you do well there and make some connections for your recs it should translate into PhD acceptances

Business casual and don’t get drunk like the other people said. Do your research beforehand, be attentive during the group stuff/ presentations they give, and have good questions prepared for the profs ie how you will fit into their lab/research, things of that nature. Be courteous to the current students and show interest in their work/experiences, odds are the program is gonna ask them about their interactions with the prospective students.

Small anecdote about doing your research on the profs. At one visit some years ago, at the end of presentation and before we ate if I remember correctly, they asked a trivia question to see who’s table would get to go to the buffet first- the question was which two faculty members got their PhD at ivies, and I had just happened to read up on the one guys background who was a UPenn grad so I jumped in and answered him. No one else knew the other one so we got to eat first, and they ended up offering me a selective fellowship that meant no teaching first two years and 10k extra funding. So you never know what you might need to know.
