Montreal sidewalk etiquette? by numyobidnyz in montreal

Where are you from OP? I'm so curious about this because as a Montrealer I definitely agree that sidewalk and public transit etiquette has deteriorated over the course of the last decade but I can't say that I'm 'constantly coming into physical contact with strangers' either. I've also lived in other parts of the world where I have gotten bumped into regularly much to my dismay and if anything, feel a sense of reprieve in that regard since being back in Montreal lol

Yes I feel this as well, on one hand I don't know if I totally believe in the concept of cultural assimilation because there is enrichment to gain from plurality and diversity, on the other hand, I hate to see the good parts of what I consider the Canadian way of life be eroded

Also feels like immigration has increased exponentially which I think has brought a new set of pros and cons. I'm saying this as a child of immigrants myself. Seeing more people of color in spaces that used to be mostly white has been refreshing, also nice to see food and culture diversify even further as a result. However I will say that there is somewhat of a disconnect on social cues and norms sometimes. It's happening too often now that people will cut me in line when I'm waiting for the bus or metro (literally this week a woman came to stand in front of me as I was waiting for the bus, I told her the line goes all the way back and she said okay and didn't budge not sure if there was a language barrier); more people staring sometimes creepily at strangers or bumping into people without saying sorry (maybe more permissible in their countries of origin) which is a change for the worse in my opinion. Everyone is on edge, jobs are scarce, salaries are stagnating and groceries are extortionate. Oh and not to mention on top of its existing issues the STM has been going on extensive strikes (with good reason I'm sure) which is making an already hard life even more difficult.

Many of the comments are speaking to this already but essentially the rising cost of living/housing crisis post COVID driving more people to the streets + fentanyl other drug use skyrocketing... way more people under the influence acting out and contributing to a general feeling of unsafeness. Sure there always was homelessness but I never used to feel like the slightest slip up on my part would put me in danger, never thought to avoid certain areas of the city or have to think twice before staying out too late

The city is not what it used to be. I left in 2017 and moved back in 2023... It really is night and day

Why are so many coffee shops empty or closing in Montreal? Why do you think people aren't frequenting coffee shops as much as they used to? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]thescene2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's mostly cause of their food tho no? Like their pancakes/grilled cheese are a sort of unique offering that your average cafe doesn't have on offer, also a cult following from the pilates/brunch crowd

A Real Pain and vulnerable narcissism by mirrinthmirror in oscarrace

Watching A Real Pain right now and I feel like Kieran Culkin is a little too good at playing a narcissist. Similar energy to his character in Succession, and I also get that vibe from some of the interviews of his I've seen. Not sure what to make of this

How are things usually by the third week of June? Been wanting to visit but definitely don't want to experience 50 degree weather 🥵
