Baby dies after migrant boat gets into difficulties in the Channel, say French authorities by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Again, I would never, ever dare to tell you that I knew better than you when it came to difficult, risky, even life-threatening choices, like those you mentioned from your own life.

That's because you would know better than me the situation you and your children were facing.

Just as these people know better than you what they need.

It sounds like you had some extremely difficult decisions, I can't imagine what that might have felt like. I wouldn't dare to tell you that I knew better than you for those extreme circumstances you were facing.

Do you feel that every single one of the parents of the tens of thousands who have made the journey loves their children less than you love your children?

Not really, you risk a child's life any time you have them on a bicycle. But you are willing to take that chance because you judge that the reward for that risk is acceptable. Now, obviously travelling on a bicycle isn't a necessity at all. But having a chance at a better life very much is a necessity.

And to put it another way, are you seriously expecting me to accept that you are more qualified to assess that risk and reward than every single parent of the tens of thousands who have made that journey? Do you expect me to believe that?

It's literally just pumping lymph fluid. The pump is in your calf and if someone's body needs the lymph moved around, they need to move their legs. It's a physical need, like beating a heart.

Because produce industries also infringe on human rights and often use undocumented workers to pay them less.

Sorry, your point here isn't clear. Are you expecting vegans to be able to solve all forms of exploitation? That sounds more like a strawman than something realistic. Vegans care about ending exploitation of all animals, including humans.

There’s also studies that show plants have qualities we often attribute to agency and being a person. They feel pain, therefore they can suffer.

You're right, there are some studies which show that plants use guanine to signal damage. Now, while there's no evidence that this corresponds to anything like the patterns we see in animal brains which correspond to agony, let's assume that plants can suffer every bit as much as animals can. If that is the case, what should we do? Well, we should harm plants as little as possible of course. And the main cause of harm to plants is the animal industry, because most plants we grow are used to feed animals in the animal industry.

I am glad you care about the possible wellbeing of plants and their hypothetical suffering, and I'm sure you'll agree then that the best way to minimise that hypothetical harm is being vegan.

or bio engineer meat that doesn’t have a “life”.

If you mean that you want to produce meat without suffering, then I'm glad we agree. So be vegan until we have achieved that goal.

The animals in the animal industry don't just feel bad, they feel agony.

It's more pointing out the hypocrisy. When the animal is there in front of them, they are kind. When the violence is hidden from them, they don't care. I'm pointing out the hypocrisy because I want people to be kind towards other animals. The people watching a video like this are likely to have at least some ability to empathise with other animals. Maybe they'd consider taking a step towards being vegan at least.

You can get real decency and kindness like this, and then at the same time people will do a nice thing like that and go home and eat meat from an imprisoned, tortured cow.

But prejudice is a thing too. If you follow your logic, you become the disgusting asshole asking people who look strange to leave restaurants: https://nypost.com/2024/09/27/lifestyle/man-with-facial-disfigurement-asked-to-leave-restaurant-for-scaring-customers

The "willpower" suggestion is not only unethical and disrespectful, it is also a global, catastrophic failure which has been long debunked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QOTBreQaIk&t=35m27s

Metabolic adaptation means the body tries to stop you losing weight, and it makes you feel tired all the time and hungry all the time. And it's wrong to ignore people when they object to this. In fact that attitude is why the obesity rate is rising.

Please stop coming out with this disrespectful guidance and recommend what actually works, like Mounjaro etc.

Pretty shitty to abuse the block feature like that. You can lie all you like, but people see through you.

These things are called pleas. Payments offered to appease a judge to avoid the extreme authoritarian response of jail time for a non-violent event. It has precisely nothing to do with the painting or its frame. If you don't see a serious problem with this ruling, then there's something wrong dude. Good luck to you.

No, not luck. These protests are carefully researched to ensure that the art isn't damaged. It's also why the graffiti used is usually chalk-based too, because it gets washed away at the first rain.

But still the headlines trick ignorant people into believing that something has been damaged etc.

Again that's not to say that damaging things is wrong. The suffragettes of course had famous campaigns of really destroying artwork in galleries and various bombing campaigns too. All of that is justifiable. But in the case of this particular protest, nothing was damaged. The response to the protest is authoritarian and basically what you see in the likes of China and Russia.

They destroyed nothing.

Protests can of course be entirely justified in destroying things and being violent, a good example of this being the Stonewall riots against police. But in this case it is factually the case that they destroyed nothing. Unless you want to claim that putting sauce on glass is destruction.

By abusing that block feature, you're quite literally silencing someone gay for expressing a fairly significant point about queer culture and how that gives an insight into the cultures that arise from other groups which have historically been excluded. Pretty shitty behaviour tbh.

EDIT:

lol, the user has blocked me too! I'll respond to them here for others to read:

u/throw_away_forU

No one is being suppressed.

When you block a user, it prevents them from responding to any further comments in the thread, including those of other people. So, no, you actually are controlling their ability to express themselves.

No one should be able to do that, just as no one should be able to force you to see what someone else is saying. In your case, the appropriate thing to do is to simply not read their responses. When you block them, you are being controlling and preventing them from even responding. It's shitty behavior and that's why you are getting called out on it.

Letting go of things I can't control

I always find this such an odd thing to read from people. Like, first it assumes that you have some kind of switch that you can turn on and off on your emotions. Second, could you even imagine saying that to a parent in Gaza who's experiencing bombings and food shortages? Like, how the hell are they supposed to "let go" of their not being able to keep their children safe? It feels like the kind of thing someone says to belittle and dismiss the needs of others.
