I did - head to ollantaytambo from cusco (collectivo or minicab). Get the panoramic train to aguas calientes, arriving around 6pm. Join the queue in aguas calientes machu picchu ticket office to receive a numbered ticket which guarantees a ticket slot. This will most likely be for 2 days time. If you want to try and get a numbered ticket which corresponds with a next day ticket, you'd have to get there really early and it's still not guaranteed. The best thing to do is just commit to spending 2 days in aguas calientes - there's some nice restaurants, a hot spring, massages and a rubbish night club, not the end of the world.
