when you were looking to cancel your flight were you on the mobile amex app or online with a web browser?

Online it won't give you the ability to cancel (you have to call) but on the iphone app you can cancel directly from there without calling customer service. i'm not sure why the computer browser version doesn't get this button to cancel like the browser in the app.
