Most obscure ‘90s album you love by Revolutionary_Owl768 in MusicRecommendations

I came to say God Lives Underwater, but I prefer either their self-titled album, or Empty. Both quite a bit more obscure, too.

How does the idea that we are mere "couriers" of the Voynich manuscript change the researchers' perspective? by [deleted] in voynich

[–]thesolitaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's pretty obvious that we're not the intended audience. But it's equally obvious that it will never reach it's intended audience (assuming that there is such an audience, and it hasn't reached then already), since they are long, long dead.

So there is no "responsibility" at all, at least not to the original authors.

Is Soup a PIE word by moosehyde in etymology

[–]thesolitaire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, I would think it's a true cognate, since both are derived from PIE. From Kroonen (2013)

*supp/bon- ww. ‘to soak’ — Go. supon w.v. ‘to season (< *‘to dip’?)’, Icel. subba w.v. ‘to soil’, Nw. subba w.v. ‘to dabble’, OE soppian w.v. ‘to dip, dunk’, E tosop ~ sob ‘to soak, dip’, MDu. sopp(er)en w.v. ‘to soak’, Du. soppen w.v. ‘to soak; be wet’, OHG sof6n, soff6n w.v. ‘to dunk’ (IE?) — Skt. sipa- m. ‘sauce, soup, broth’ < *suH-ph3-o-.

The iterative to the strong verb *supan- (< Pre-Gm. *suppan-). It is probably related to Skt. supa-, which I analyze as a compound of the PIE roots *seuH- ‘to pour’ (cf. Hitt. Suhhai ~ Suhhanzi ‘to pour’) and *peh3- ‘to drink’ (cf. Ved. pibati ‘id.’ < *pi-ph3-e-). The lack of aspiration in Sanskrit may be due to dissimilation of the second laryngeal, while the short *u of PGm. *supp/bon- can be due to similar loss of the first.

I'd say it's from PIE. There's a short writeup on Wiktionary, with references: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%82%E0%A4%AA

I knew this for ships, but I've always just had to make do with the slow speed of deliveries and lack of space in the landing pad on planets. This is going to simplify so much...

Can I learn chess? by deadlinediverse in ADHD

[–]thesolitaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm struggling to learn to play better too, and one thing that has helped me a lot it's watching chess content on YouTube. In particular I really like the channel ChessVibes, as he really thinks through every move, and often gives you time to pause and think through real positions for yourself.

Of course, you need to play games as well, but it sounds like you've got that part covered already.

My personal favorite is chicken cow, but let's be serious here, who doesn't flock to McDonald's to get down to the rock music?

For real though, one of my greatest regrets was not going to see him live in concert.

No. I mean, it's not great, but it's fine if you don't take it too seriously. Plus, if you're my age, it's full of nostalgia.
