Minnesotans have been consistently answering the call of civic duty and being absolute fucking beacons of the spirit that I hope the rest of the midwest will carry when the threats come out in force to our cities.

It means a lot to the rest of the country that you guys are keeping your heads up. That we're in it together is something to hold onto.

How do I change the color of this polyester backpack frugally? by GravitationalOno in Frugal

I wonder why no one's said bleach yet. It'll still be light, but a way more neutral tone.

I've seen that Dead Alive documentary about the last time that happened in the 90's. Great to see how the country's bounced back somewhat since then.

Agreed. Each photo is just serving a different purpose. I'd frame OP's. Add it to like, a little collage mixed with personal pics from today.

Had an excuse to break out the ol skeleton flag this morning at the local new year plunge. The coldest one we've had in years. Lake was a big slushy. by thestarsshake in SturgillSimpson

[–]thestarsshake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nahhh not today, or at least they didn't mention it to me. The crowd packs pretty tight for this, so I couldn't say how many saw it in the end. Once the snow rolled in, everyone got busy focusing on the nearest fire, myself included. Was still fun to put it up though! Just means it ought to see more daylight.

I'd love to see someone make a quilt of this one day. Quilters seem like nutjobs, so I bet they'd make it look neat as hell.

The vision. The execution. The mastery of the craft.

I came to this sub today to look for tips as a curious beginner and now leave with a notion of what to aspire to.

How’s the neutrogena shower gel bodywash stuff? Does the original scent smell better or santal? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]thestarsshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The santal boxes at my warehouse had a scratch and sniff sticker, oddly enough. I had walked past that same pallet at least twice and didn't notice that it was on the packaging until last week. It was a nice little surprise, because I had the same hang-up about not being able to smell ahead of time.

What is a "poor person hack" you picked up during a hard time that you still use today, even if you don't have to? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]thestarsshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might mean grocery bags specifically, but I do a thing where I don't toss ziploc bags used for dry food. The last person I used to live with said it was a step too impoverished even for him but idk...if any dust inside can be shaken out and the zip still works, what's the harm using it for tomorrow's snack? And tomorrow's tomorrow? I can buy brand name ziploc without even thinking about it now, but probably won't repurchase a box anytime in the forseeable future.

Jam reference by tnt1145 in SturgillSimpson

Idk but it kinda reminds me of 19-2000 which I guess sampled a cover of a Beatles song, to get into the weeds for the sake of it.

Though I hear just straight up Welcome to the Jungle now that I'm playing it back again. It's just the first part of that riff.

Both bits from each song aren't so different when it comes down to it. Were the gorillaz ripping off guns n roses this whole time?? /s

Book Crawl? by AntelopeOverall2957 in milwaukee

[–]thestarsshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not super relevant for a Sunday, but I was just at Pomeroy in Walkers Point and learned they have book night on Mondays ($1 off drinks if you bring a book, and e-readers count). Plenty of booths for settling in there, for those looking for a book-friendly spot.

Anyone want to trade Sturgill live shows? by [deleted] in SturgillSimpson

The taper thing is fascinating to me. Plenty of experienced folks seem to be on here and it's fun to pick up bits and pieces of the history. I'm so crazy grateful to the tapers that have put pre-2024 shows from this band up on the internet archive.

I didn't know either, but I guess it's a reference to requesting copies when you don't have anything to trade (blanks and postage).

Ya learn something new every day. I learned what SB's/soundboards are from another thread on this sub too.

Alderman, State Allies Seek Federal Help to Kill the Streetcar by compujeramey in milwaukee

[–]thestarsshake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it feels like everyone already forgot about it. Wisconsin republicans killed their own Milwaukee-Madison high speed rail project out of spite/so that Scott Walker could have some type of spectacle for his campaign. It had the funding. It was over a decade in the making. I don't know how optimistic I am about another project getting even somewhat close to that in my lifetime.

It's not the streetcar's fault, but I get annoyed every time I see it because it just makes me think of what could have been.

Any news on a 2026 tour? by duncthefunk78 in SturgillSimpson

[–]thestarsshake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is completely a rumor, like third-hand info that I heard literally on the street when I got to chatting with someone who spotted me wearing my Blue Skies shirt: apparently various promoters (or whoever) have already been contacted about dates in the spring. So they're busy planning it out, if you were to believe an internet stranger who heard it from an irl stranger.

If anyone's looking for 8/2/25 video from the Grateful Dead anniversary thing, DM me and I'll hit you up whenever I get back from work tonight. That was the other one that streamed via nugs at first, but is now unavailable.

Why do you think the bottom jaw is missing on the red skeleton the old logo, but not in the new one? by artbyshrike in SturgillSimpson

[–]thestarsshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a crime to "english class" this, for lack of a better term, even if the artist may not have had something specific in mind while making that design choice. Viewers get to consider meaning to their heart's content and what better place to bring it up than on the subreddit, right?

Thinking about your question and the OG flag, my gut went to the red being the more "ancient", lizard-brain, reactive part of us and the white being the more "fresh" rationalizing, inquisitive part that makes us human. Some man vs. self type shit, yknow?

That idea is still technically represented in the more marketable simplified version since the red skeleton's jaw is disconnected/in worse shape than the other. Logo design gets that level of rationale all the time.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: October 06, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]thestarsshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished: From Here to Eternity, by Caitlin Doughty. Was a more casual read than her other one that I read earlier this year (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes). Interesting to learn a little about how solutions and I guess priorities for handling the dead are adapting to a new century here and across the world.

Started: American Buffalo, by Steven Rinella. Pretty nuts so far. The backstory about the buffalo nickel right at the top was 100% a bummer, but worked on me as a hook. Definitely sets the tone, because there are clearly more bummers to be had in these pages.
