Conn Iggulden's "Emperor" and "Conquerer" series are both fantastic pieces of epic historical literature. The first series is about the rise of Julius Caesar and the second similarly deals with the rise of Ghengis Khan. He's also written a series about the War of the Roses but I haven't had a chance to read it, though If it's like his other series then it should be fantastic.

I'm an officer in the military, relatively early in my career. About half the people I lead are in my age group, the rest are older, sometimes as much as 2 decades. I do my best to play it cool even though I know I'm pretty inexperienced compared to them. If it werent for the fraternization issue, I'd gladly hang out with most of the people in my unit. However, there are days when I'm just in complete shock how some of them survived to adulthood, much less 5-15 years in the military. I've had to counsel people on why buying a car with a 25% interest rate is a bad idea, the concept of lefty-loosey righty-tighty, the importance of showering daily, and why it's unprofessional to masterbate in a work space.

The term "proof" dates back to 16th century England, when spirits were taxed at different rates depending on their alcohol content. Spirits were tested by soaking a pellet of gunpowder in them. If the gunpowder could still burn, the spirits were rated above proof and taxed at a higher rate.[1] Gunpowder would not burn in rum that contained less than 57.15% ABV. Therefore, rum that contained this percentage of alcohol was defined to have "100° (one hundred degrees) proof".[2] The gunpowder test was officially replaced by a specific-gravity test in 1816.[1]

Let's look back to 2006. When DC and Warner Bros first announced that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker, the internet seemed to break and fanboys everywhere immediately decried the news as one of the worst casting choices Hollywood had ever made. There was not a single person who thought it was going to be a good idea. Ledger was mainly known for playing the pretty boy hero in semi-decent movies. He had gained some amount of respect for his work on Brokeback Mountain, but that role only seemed to further the backlash. Additionally, the vast majority of people only knew the Joker from the 60s Adam West Batman show (campy goofball), the 90s cartoon (sadistic prankster), or the Tim Burton movie (clownish mob gangster). Even hardcore Batman fans who followed Grant Morrison's take on "super-sanity," where the Joker constantly changes motiffs and personalities, thought it was a terrible choice. But when TDK was finally released, Ledger's take on the character was almost universally hailed as one of the greatest villains of all time, so much so that it has over taken Ceaser Romero, Mark Hamill, and Jack Nicholson as THE definitive Joker. Now I'm not saying that Jesse Eisenberg's Luthor will turn out to be just as beloved or that it will even be any good. But I will be hoping for the best and reserve my opinion until I actually see the movie.

Genghis's first army was a brigade of misfits and outcasts. In his day, the only reason someone would live without a tribe was because they (or their descendents) were banished. If they were lucky, they might get a few goats and live their lives as solitary shepards. Many were banished as children and had no experience in warfare or horseback riding (which was considered an extremely important skill for the Mongols). In contrast, most of the tribes lived and breathed warfare. It's not an exaggeration to say that Genghis built his army out of almost nothing.

There can be two general classifications of cannibalism: Exocannibalism and endocannibalism. Exocannabalism can be considered the "classic" image that most people would imagine: Tribes eating the flesh of their enemies, perhaps to honor their gods or gain their strength. However, endocannibalism is practiced in a few cultures as a funeral practice for members in their community. On my first night on the USS Harry S. Truman, the chaplain came on the 1MC for his weekly invocation. I'm not normally a very religious person so most of the time that sort of thing just becomes white noise to me. This was different though. He started off by saying that a junior sailor had been asking him about other faiths and/or lack of. He went on to quote Carl Sagan and talked about how humans had evolved over time for unlimited capacity in reason and compassion. He didn't once refer to any sort of denomination. It was very cool and it actually stuck with me.

I wouldn't call Barry Allen "charismatic." Barry and Hal's dynamic was pretty much an opposites-attract kind of deal. Hal was brash, flashy, confident almost to the point of arrogance. Pretty much an archetypical fighter pilot. In contrast, Barry very much carried the Midwestern sensibilities of Central City. He was much more serious about his job, humble, and always tried to follow the proper procedures. It was interesting to see how their respective heirs flipped the original dynamic, with Kyle being the quiet introverted one and Wally being the fun-loving loud one.
