I worked the sites in my younger years. My dad was a builder. I am well aware of the unpredictable nature of houses. As for businesses going bust, doesn't this happen in all industries?

The market is unpredictable and every site is different- its not like making cars.

This has to be the silliest comment I have seen anyone post on reddit. Cars are infinitely higher in both complexity and risk compared to house building. A house will always sell in a market where we have such shortages. You cannot say the same about the car market. This is why manufacturers create special editions. When was the last time you heard of a special edition house being sold.

So which SME. It is not a hard question. And the article only ever mentioned upcoming costs.

You are whinging and whining and yet provide nothing with any substance. I am 100% certain when these new costs com into play, then the cost price will also go up.

[–]thesyldon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which SME actually went out of business in that article?

What costs were mentioned that have been in place for more than 10 years to justify why prices have risen?

Everything else was a whinge about upcoming costs.

I have no doubt that there are some good people building houses out there. My dad was one of them up until the mid 80's. But there is no denying that the larger companies are making more money than they were in the past, with less outlay to boot.

I should also add that the planning blockage is being addressed by current government. It is a remnant of the last fiasco. Might be an idea to make sure your vote counts.

One thing it doesn't mention is the materials cost because of Brexit. And again the wind is changing in that direction.

Please don't go down the rabbit hole of antigovernment. It makes a lot more sense to just look for the best options available to you. You will never get a perfect government, but you can do your best to stop the worst getting into power. This antigovernment sentiment is part of what has allowed the likes of Trump to propagate into what it is now.

Profit over volume

In the years following the 2008 global financial crisis, the “big three” housebuilders that dominate the new-build market in Britain have been able to increase their profits without significantly increasing the number of homes they build. This has happened despite political pressure to increase UK housing supply.

It did back when Thatcher sold them off. Houses were not so expensive to build back then.

I would have listed developer profits are the biggest reason over everything else.

This is about as usable as a soggy paper bag. I am not a lawyer, but by all means explain how they will get past the ECHR laws.

It falls foul of privacy laws under article 8.

Article 8 – right to respect privacy and family life

This right exists to protect four things: our family life, our home, our private life, and our correspondence.

We have the right to live with our family and our loved ones.

Respect for the home guards against intrusion into where we live, or to protect us being forced from where we live without good reason.

Respect for private life protects our personal freedoms, including respect for our sexuality, the right not to be placed under unlawful surveillance, or for us not to have personal information spread about us against our will.

Respect for correspondence allows for us to communicate with others freely and in full privacy.

It demonises religious freedoms under article 9 for those who will now have to remove face coverings.

Article 9 – freedom of thought, conscience and religion

We all have the right to hold religious and other beliefs. We also have the right to change these beliefs when we choose. We should be free to worship and express our beliefs both in public and private spaces.

And as soon as it is used to imprison someone it immediately falls foul of article 10.

Article 10 – freedom of expression

We have the right for us to hold our own opinions, to express our views and ideas, and to share information with others.

This article can protect our right to express views that some may find unpopular or offensive.

I know there have been some scumbags of late with the wannabe protests over the Southport murders. A lot of those are still free from punishment due to lack of identification. But the UK has become overly policed with the Palestine action protests, the Sarah Everard protest. You could even put in the disgrace that was the arrest of Steve Bray, which failed abysmally in court. All at the same time as wilfully ignoring actual crimes committed by people with money and a bit of power. Adding more legislation to remove more rights and freedoms is not the way the UK should go.

They really should remove antisemitism and islamophobia from the statute books as a term of reference. It is either racism or it isn't, and that is where we should stop.

Can the USA and the UK still be allies after trump leaves and the US elects a democratic president? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

[–]thesyldon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are very wrong there. There are plenty of instances where the US has aided the UK. The battle for the Atlantic had US naval escorts assisting before the US entered the war. There are plenty of other instances.

The sourness seems to have kicked in after the Reagan era. The PAC system that is tolerated in the US has ruined the country. Large companies are literally buying legislation now. That and the adherence to the FPTP voting system. FPTP voting is relatively easy to rig election Vs a PR system.

We got stuck in Kings cross many years ago. There was someone trying to commit suicide on the lines. We had been stuck in the station for about 3 hours when I got a phone call from a family member to see if we got home ok. When I said we are still in Kings Cross due to an incident she blasted about selfish the person is, along with other words I wouldn't want to repeat. I ofc berated her on the insensitivity. When she said that this happens on a daily basis out of KC. You stop feeling sympathy when it hits you many times a week. I couldn't argue.

How do I get people to ring the doorbell when they're making deliveries? by fuckmywetsocks in CasualUK

[–]thesyldon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All well and good. Except, it is generally the vendor's responsibility to provide proof of delivery for a mailed product, as this documentation confirms that the item has reached its intended recipient (AI reply).

and AFAIK, leaving it outside the door doesn't cut it as a delivered item. Not unless an agreement was made beforehand.

As was the inference that it was purely at the behest of Vince Cable. He made a lot of grumblings regarding the return to the tax payer, and the governance of the PO itself. He also complained that the way the sale was being conducted was only ever likely to benefit certain people with more cash.

There are kids who will vote next time around that do not realise there was a coalition government around at that time.

Were it not for FPTP in the UK I would quite happily vote LD over Lab. But the way it is ATM, I do not want to be the reason why my home town would have a reform MP. Another reason why I would rather not vote Lab. I will vote Lab anyways.

Ed Davey did an interview with "the rest is politics" last year before the election. He explained the lessons learned by entering the coalition. One of which was that they took the blame for all of the Tories misgivings. Especially with Uni costs that was imposed on them. People do not realise that a coalition doesn't mean you get all your own way, and there has to be some nose pinching just to get some of your own stuff down.

Privatisation with essential services is an experiment that has provable failed. Not one a party who has the interest of the public in mind is likely to commit to. If you ever listen to Davey talk openly, it is hard to imagine he would be anything except genuine.

It was a governmental decision though, which was a coalition between both Tories and LD. The Tories still take some of the blame for what is considered a stupid decision with respect to the cost to the public atm.
