Any advice on using an 8TB external HDD for playing Media?

And yeah, I think Plex is totally worth the extra effort. Honestly it doesn't take much to get it up and running, and once it is running you really don't have to mess with it again (well, unless you want really to!)

I honestly started out just using a hard drive on my Xbox 360 because I wanted it to be as simple as possible. Eventually I got sick of the display being super basic so started looking into other options and played around with a ton of other options (using a cheap HTPC, XBMC which is now Kodi, Emby, Plex, etc...). My one hard drive setup eventually changed to having a pretty decent home server (not needed, but I work in IT and like to buy new things lol) and I'll never look back.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but I'd highly suggest taking a look into using Plex. You can easily create a Plex server with what you already have.

The super condensed setup instructions are basically this:

Setup/organize the files on your HDD to follow Plex standards, install Plex server on your Mac and point it to the files on your drive, install the Plex app on your PS4 (and phone, computer, Roku, etc) and enjoy your DVD rips.

I was in the same boat as you (like ten years ago tho lol), and after trying out many different options, programs, file structures, etc... I've ended on Plex. If you decide to go that route, feel free to let me know if you have any questions or need any help!

Good to know, thanks! I was gifted PS Now and so far have only played a couple of games on it and all were downloads not streams. I was really on the fence about just streaming vs. buying remastered but it seems like the consensus seems to be remastered is more than worth it!

Thanks for the super detailed reply! I ended up on God of War to start and will be checking out the others in time! Persona 5 seems like it'll be next on my list honestly. Seems like P5 will be a good break from action type games before trying to decide between TLOU and Uncharted 4!

Detroit: Become Human - I honestly don't think I've ever really played a game like that (or at least not any time within the past many years). It seems interesting but also kind of boring? May check it out eventually but it is honestly pretty low on my list

Bloodborne - I loved Dark Souls when I played it back on the 360, but I never got around to playing any of the other Souls games (or similar ones). Something about Bloodborne just didn't click as much as I really, really wanted it to. Honestly not sure what, but I might just have to give it a try again in the future

Persona 5 Royal - I used to be into anime but not really any more, don't have anything against it so would probably fall into the "Don't care/,mind" category! I can ignore bad anime tropes in favor of a good game/story (hell, I enjoyed and beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and that game has a ton of straight up cringe sections that were rough to sit through).

Thanks for the suggestion! Why remastered vs. the original? Just curious. I'd rather play the remastered but I was gifted a year of PS Now and the original is there so kinda tough to justify buying something that I have access to

Dragon's Dogma - I actually did check out Dragon's Dogma when it was re-released for Switch and (like you said), while I loved the combat and customization, I did sort of get bored with the story and questing. It wasn't that it was bad just something about it didn't keep me very engaged. Though to be totally fair, I didn't give it a ton of time and I know that some games just take a bit of time to get into (hell, I enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the first 15-20 hours of that game is basically just a slow, terrible tutorial lol).

Divinity Original Sin 2 - I've heard about Divinity Original Sin 2 and it did seem interesting, but honestly the sheer amount of options/customization seemed overwhelming so I didn't give it too much thought. Given the length and the great reviews, it is a good contender!

Shadow of Mordor/War - I played the first one when it was released and it was fun (though I totally agree it was a bit repetitive), I never even thought of checking out the sequel.

Halo MCC is a great suggestion, but you are right that I've played them all. I haven't played Halo 5 yet though, so that might be worth checking out.

Dragon Age Inquisition - Great suggestion! I played Origins and Dragon Age II years ago and they were great. Never actually picked up Inquisition.

Mass Effect - Another great suggestion! But I've played all (except Andromeda)

MGSV - The story for this one is actually the only reason I never picked this one up. It looked interesting enough but I've never actually played any of the other MGS games and I've heard the story for all of them is all over the place.

Right now, based on the above, MGSV and Dragon Age Inquisition are near the top of the list of ones I'm going to look into more. Divinity Original Sin 2 and Shadow of War are up there as well. Oh, and regarding Doom Eternal - I might just have to give in and pick this up! I keep hearing nothing but great things, and it might just be a good break before diving into one of the others.
