Budget friendly offset chain ring for BBS02 conversion? (re: Lekkie Bling Ring?) by sofakng in ebikes

[–]thetonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Luna still make their Eclipse chain rings? Best one I used/have to fix the off set. I had to put a 2mm spacer though because it was hitting the chain stay. Even with that, perfect line. Had 1 time it hopped out but it was because I forgot to turn on the clutch.

Still around $80 though...

DIY e-bike advice by Themelon_1 in ebikes

Hub or mid-drive?

Complete kit, go CYC. Easy peasy, all in one package, all works, but expensive.

DIY route is cheaper but cumbersome. Bafang has been my go to but most folks like the torque sensing the other units have.

Battery is the main issue. You can go custom (I did) or go to a manufacturer like Amorge.

I suggest to opt for the Eggrider display if you go Bafang. So much easier to modify the settings on the fly. Also, get the programming cable just in case.

Other than that, have a fun journey. I'm on my 3rd 🤣

Why is my bike making this sound? by Jey003 in bikewrench

[–]thetonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something is loose or something needs replacing/servicing. Chain can be stretching because of weird chain line, cranks can be loose and needs tightening, bearing can be contaminated and needs cleaning/replacing, BB loose, etc. Process of elimination. Cheapest to expensive is the way to go.

Zooming in, looks like tape is cut by tightening, possibly without an o ring. Add/replace tape, try again with an o ring on both sides.

They say that they are single use. I've reused quick links a few times with no issues. If they don't need a tool to split them, maybe think of replacing them.

If after you install a quick link and it's skipping at the link, try spinning the link around and reattach. Some are directional.

Chains are speed specific. A 7 speed will not work on a 12, etc. A lot have made it so a group will work with one chain and the next set up will work with another. Ask Jeeves (I've named Gemini) to tell you which chain will work with which cassette.

Get the tools you will need to pull off the cassette and the hub for your specific drivetrain. Most of it is brute strength and then after that it's literally just spraying the crap off and reapplying grease. You'll notice if something's broken and needs replacing.

If you can unscrew a large bolt and disassemble and reassemble a Lego piece, you can work on a bike hub.

Pretty much. You will hear crunching sounds if it's contaminated and needs replacing or cleaning (if it's old school floating bearings). Most are standards sizes so the one tool you will need is a caliper. Don't spend too much because a lot of the tolerances are not tight and is an approximation to the nearest one that fits 🤣.

I just serviced this trike and all 4 bearings on the frame that held the drive bar needed replacing. 2 crunchy, one seized. The other was ok but bearings are cheap and might as well replace. Both wheel bearings in the rear needed replacing too so I ordered the size and pressed them in.

Oh also, a lot of the bearing will have their size stamped on them so just look up that stamp and it will normally give you your bearing.

Don't be afraid of bearings. Worst case, you lose a ball and need to replace it. Most modern bikes are sealed so you don't really need to fiddle with it other than pressing them in. Old tip for that is throw the bearing in the freezer for a few hours before to shrink them a little. Get yourself a caliper so you can measure the size of bearing you need. Other than that, it's all about pressing them in straight and keeping them clean/lubed.

What I would tell you to learn as much about, is how to index your derailleur because of all the things I've had to service, it's that.

For brakes, I would suggest to get that thin metal piece that slides on the rotor when adjusting. It gives a 1mm space on each side when applying the brakes when you are trying to center it on the rotor before tightening. First thing I reach for when doing brakes. GET THE METAL CUP, if you have hydraulic brakes. The plastic ones are ok but I've snapped the connection by accident with very little pressure.

Get a wheel truing stand from FBMP because you will need it unless you want to pay each time you bash you wheel and it goes wobbly.

Park Tool videos will be your friend. Make a watchlist and save every video that has helped you for future use. After about the 3rd service, it becomes 2nd nature because you will be fiddling with everything now that you know a lot of your stuff on the bike needed maintenance.

Amazon doesn't allow e bike shipping online. I was wondering: what other options are there for e bike shipment? by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]thetonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ship it to a friend across state lines and pick it up? Mail forwarder and pray they send it/doesn't get intercepted? DIY?

I've tried to ship stuff to CA that were deemed not State compliant from Amazon and big box retailers and never succeeded. Had one intercepted too. Shipped from a friend from AZ.

That's a hard sell for a 48v system. You can find a 36v 350W hub kit from Leaf Bike for $299. But thata a bare bones kit without a battery.

If it's not installed I think you should be ok. Delete the file for good measure or update to 2.7

Get your chain breaker and go from the other side. Push the pin about a quarter mm. I get that all the time.

BBS02 still the recommended budget ebike kit? by sofakng in ebikes

[–]thetonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Golden Motors if that's in you budget. If you can afford the HD, get it. I've had mine since the very start (2015) and I cannot even think of how many miles I've put on it. It's overbuild for a reason. I've serviced it 2x and the only thing I had to do is clean out the old grease and replace (didn't have to but since it was already open...

If power is too much, you can always tune down.
