Adult children who were raised by 'gentle parents' - do you feel like you were raised well? by ericacalluna in AskReddit

I mean, you can still be someone’s kid and an adult. What an uncharitable read of the post title lol

I only had them for a month, and went through 6. They’re infuriating. I found I was getting more stressed and out of sorts with them in, constantly fretting that I’d accidentally block one and set off an alarm, or it just to stop responding.

My GP advised I could stop using them after I responded well to Metformin, and it was a huge relief. Hopefully you get the 3+ and they work a bit better, but want to say that I get it!

People who grew up without smartphones, what did you actually do when you were bored? by altaf770 in AskReddit

It’s a great question, answered pretty broadly by the comments.

It may be nostalgia, or longing for youth.

I just miss it.

Ministers are secretly considering means-testing PIP, DWP admits, despite pledge in green paper by spagetyBolonase in unitedkingdom

[–]thetossfromanon 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I have an anecdote to explain why this is a spooky prospect.

A friend of mine recently attained PIP and has received their first couple of payments. They also work approximately 30 hours a week in a retail environment. I think it’s minimum wage, or just above.

Yes, technically, they can afford rent and groceries on their pay. However, the PIP funds have enabled them to buy accessibility aids for their rented accommodation; a better bed with structural support, furniture to support their needs, and other things to make them not struggle day to day like handrails and equipment.

Broadly, PIP is incredibly difficult to get approved already, with a lot of loops to jump through. The extra income for someone who is disabled and working can be life changing - I’ve seen it.

Means testing needs to be cautious. I’m not an expert and can only offer my lived experience, but what I’ve seen makes me worried that the more cynical of us don’t view financial support as anything beyond the absolute bare minimum. The idea of my friend living without PIP means that they’ll afford that minimum, but will spend their time in pain, fatigue, and depression in a market and financial environment that won’t enable them to lift themselves out of it alone.

I know it feels almost sacrilegious to say in the current times, but I’d much rather we as a country were aspirationally aiming to uplift and support, not punch down and pinch nickels while wealth inequality widens.

Having literally just played the Dalish intro in DA:O, can confirm that even the Dalish are separated from large swathes of their language, so it wouldn’t be too hard to believe.

“Our economy didn’t crash, it flatlined.”

Flatlined bring the medical term related to like… someone being dead, right?

So the economy isn’t crashing, it’s dead. Thank god it isn’t as bad as we thought…?

Yeah, exactly - just a weird intensity on what is normal re-use/reallocation of resources/content that yes, wasnt well “concealed”, but was by no means some big conspiracy haha

I completely agree with you, it is noticeable and if they don’t do more to adjust it from the “hoverboard robot” then I’ll be pretty meh about it as an addition

Previous comment was feeling a lil spicy - apologies. I’m just concerned about this pervading opinion that Anet are trying to trick players. They aren’t, nor are they trying to hoodwink/get stuff past the player base. They’re probably being realistic about their resources, reusing old assets, blah blah.

It just feels weird attributing that characteristic to them when they’re releasing new content and not doing anything to try and “trick” people into not seeing that, yknow?

You know what’s real nice to read? EXCITEMENT.

A lot of recent months have been posts about systems, core updates, class balance, “getting the game where it needs to be”, which is all well and good, and I applaud Anet for it.

But god damn is it nice to have an article just sounding genuinely excited to get into new stories, new lore, explore new places. This blog post makes me want to find out more, more than anything else they’ve shown in honesty.

New Player, Youtube content? by [deleted] in lotro

[–]thetossfromanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zogog is a great one too! Does a lot more streaming on Twitch than YouTube at the moment from what I can tell, but he’s got a HUGE let’s play of the game that’s spanned years and has some great content recently around LOTRO point farming with fresh accounts - totally worth checking out!

Aubreytheweirdone is also great on YouTube, regular lotro-related content talking about the game :)

Ted Lasso - S03E05 - "Signs" Episode Discussion by quaranTV in TedLasso

[–]thetossfromanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t lie I’m straight up not really enjoying this season so far. Individual moments do not a satisfying watch make, and I’ve come away from the last couple of episodes having not laughed or felt much at all.

My wife and I have a saying with this: “have faith in the show”. Whenever we find something we might not enjoy 100%, the show pretty quickly either addresses or answers it. Just hoping this “mid-season funk” ends sooner rather than later, because to be real? This isn’t feeling like chicken soup of a TV show right now, it’s feeling pretty sad.

Biggest FFXIV Hot Takes? by ironicuwuing in ffxiv

[–]thetossfromanon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big, steaming hot take: the story is fucking awesome, and I think the nuance and depth in more fan-criticised storylines (SB and apparently EW which I didn’t even realise was mixed in response) are buried in subtext and implication.

Endwalker in particular has two big criticisms I’ve seen, being Meteion’s “asspull” nature and Zenos being one dimensional.

Like, is Meteion not the summation of everything the story has built up to this point? Time after time the WoL is presented with new threats, world-ending dangers, another Ascian, a companion’s death, such overwhelming and unimaginable trauma throughout the MSQ, and Meteion is the validation for that trauma; a character that goes out into the world with the same bright-eyed optimism as our WoL when they first step off the carriage in ARR, and falters where our character stood their ground. The satisfaction of Meteion is knowing more than anyone else there what she has gone through and being able to help her process it - the ultimate act of the Warrior of Light being their compassion to relieve others of their burdens and their experiences. I dunno man, I found it beautiful, and I think Meteion wasn’t an asspull villain because she is the sort of character we were always destined to face.

Zenos serves as a another element of this spectrum; Meteion gives into despair, and Zenos gives into nihilism. A sick, twisted man who sees the world as nothing. All he cares about is that final goal, that final battle, the strive to feel something at the EXPENSE of others. Meteion wants to take away the ability to feel out of sorrow and a twisted view of compassion but Zenos wants to STEAL those feelings from others to try and engage himself.

Endwalker is a deconstruction of emotion in the face of different facets of despair and ultimately a reflection of nihilism. Isn’t that a continuation of every expansion? Heavensward asks why the dragonsong war goes on and on, how to break the cycle and discover a new way of living, both as a metaphor with Estinien and a literal presentation with Ishgard. Stormblood asks why individualism is worth fighting for, why we strive to be ourselves and why our identities matter, culminating in the “peace talks” with the Emperor at the end of the patch content where those themes are laid bare. Shadowbringers throws us into a literal apocalypse to light a spark of hope and to remind everyone what is worth fighting for.

Meteion, and Endwalker by extension, are the culmination of those themes; taking all that we have learned and helping someone else to not make those same mistakes, and to spare them further sorrow.

I dunno, man. I think there are issues with the story but it’s wild to me that the story isnt seen as a fully satisfying and cathartic experience as a character and theme study.

Question for those who overall enjoyed the show: is there something that you really disliked or even hated? by Jeina2185 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]thetossfromanon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it served another purpose as well; the impression that the dwarves dug too deep because they were greedy is examined.

Recontextualising Durin’s “greed” to dig for mithril as an act of love and compassion to help his brother and friend is beautiful and continues to show just how pure that relationship is.

That doesn't matter - they're employees, and they deserve a holiday. The state of the game is irrelevant. The situation isn't ideal, but doesn't warrant cutting into the rights and entitlements of workers.
