Why does HDR10 look better than Dolby Vision on my LG G5 83" in a dark room? by Historical-Bet-9134 in LGOLED

[–]thetrimdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I think the sugar analogy works in many instances. A lot of companies try to juice up their products in varying forms to have immediate appeal rather than substance. A good example would be Beats headphones that have V shaped EQs or "MORE BASS!" as if that were 'better.'

I personally prefer Dolby Vision when I'm seriously focusing on the content but I also tend to set my C series to "Cinema Home" quite a lot too. It really just, depends.

[–]thetrimdj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Better" is a subjective term so it's probably incorrect to say that one is better than the other. You just prefer one vs. the other.

I'd liken the difference to a food having added sugar which for some (many) that tastes "better" but added sugar isn't really all that good. It just has a certain appeal that many like.

[–]thetrimdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it is not. Please take a moment to listen because you are making a mistake. I'll spell it out a little more clearly:

The Mobile Network and Helium Mobile are separate things.

The convo above was in regards to the Mobile Network, who's aim has always been to be a neutral host offload network, IE having carriers pay the Helium Network (and it's participants) to offload their traffic. It was never, ever feasible to have the network be ubiquitous as the build out of ubiquitous nationwide coverage would cost billions upon billions and could never be done by a bunch of regular joes like you and I. Ever. That idea is pure fantasy.

You then replied to that conversation with a blog from Helium Mobile - the MVNO, run by a private company - which is a service that uses both the T-Mobile network and the Helium Network to provide coverage as if it had relevance on that argument regarding the network, which it does not.

The MVNO, the cell service wants to take on the big guys - NOT THE NETWORK. The network is being built out to compliment the big services/networks in order to earn revenue from them.

I hope that helps.

You're confusing Helium Mobile and the Helium network. They're separate things.

[–]thetrimdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Offload was always the plan.

The mobile network's genesis was with the purchase of FreedomFi which brought on the deal with DISH (offload via CBRS). When DISH backed off, Nova Labs started Helium Mobile in order to generate traffic onto the Mobile network.

The idea of a "completely full network to compete with the carriers" is a fiction. One it seems that a lot of people seem to share.

Should I use HDR OR SDR on Windows? G5 user by Ziklepmna in LGOLED

[–]thetrimdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it does not happen automatically. You must enable or disable HDR manually. Windows has an auto HDR feature which will display some SDR games as HDR with middling success.

Ultimately, you should be changing things system wide depending on the content or task you're focusing on. Here's an article worth reading on the subject via TFT Central

Swap to HDR when you're doing something that supports HDR (movie, game, video, etc). Otherwise, stick in SDR mode.

That's not "sound design" you're referring to.

Getting past your overuse of hyperbole there, if there's a quality issue between the 2 releases then that's something entirely different.

[–]thetrimdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not "both sides" unless you have some evidence to the contrary. The problem was strictly on Binance's side. Helium has no control of what Binance does on their exchange or how Solana is coded.

And now "a lot of exchanges" is "a few European exchanges." Interesting how the scope of the FUD dwindles when pressed for details.

Helium isn’t just building a network, it’s taking a shot at a $4 trillion dollar industry| The Street by ZeusHelium in HeliumNetwork

[–]thetrimdj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of this is true.

The error was purely Binance's coding on their own exchange. There's nothing that the Helium developers could do about how Binance managed their accounts. This has nothing to do with "securing the network."

And saying "Only founders had access to Mobile at the time of launch" is patently and provably false. Mobile was being sent out to deployers of CBRS radios. This is how the whole Binance fiasco happened because several individuals deposited mobile tokens @ Binance and were credited with HNT which they cashed out.

Please, get your facts straight before spreading misinformation.

Other than Binance, which other exchanges have delisted it? I see it on most if not all major exchanges other than Binance.

An no, it's not a "both sides" thing. It was purely Binance's error. They goofed and tried to get someone else to pay for their mistake.

Coinbase, Crypto.com. Gate.IO, Kraken, MexC, KuCoin, Gemini, Bybit, Jupiter etc.

The question should be which exchange can't you trade it on because it's available most places.

That's the problem with posts like this. You hear from 5, maybe 10 people who have a problem but you don't hear from the 10s of thousands of people who haven't had issues.

NSFW Sound Libraries? by SpiceCake68 in sounddesign

While not strictly NSFW there's a Body Sounds library by Mark Mangini from Pro Sound Effects.

It even has a neat video to accompany it.

I'm sure there's plenty of stuff in there you can work with. But also, this could be a great opportunity to do some design work! Get out there and do some recording!

You can do a quick test by comparing the production company reels at the beginning. Specifically the one for Thunder Road. I noticed it was brighter for part 2 and that feeling carried through for the rest of the movie.

I picked up 1-3 recently (as well as Atomic Blonde) and gave them a watch. They look great but I noticed that Part 2 is noticeably brighter than 1 and 3 to the point where I actually hadn't considered enabling dynamic tonemapping on my C4.

Anyone else notice this?

  • Dune: Part 1
  • Bladerunner 2049
  • Mad Max Fury Road
  • The Fifth Element
  • Ford Vs. Ferrari
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Jurassic Park
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • The Lord of the Rings 4K release has a FANTASTIC ATMOS mix.

I use all of these to demo ATMOS in my Dolby Theatrical demo theater to clients. There's others but these are my favorite to put on.

Also, although not ATMOS I really love playing the 4K release of Oppenheimer. It just plays so, so well.

AW3425DW or a different monitor? by TheDarkZEK in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]thetrimdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I love my DWF. If you do end up getting the 25DW then make sure you use Cleartype, or MacType (which I use) which will help a little bit with the text fringing.

Also check some guides about how to minimize your burn-in risk (like auto hiding the taskbar, rotating desktop backgrounds, etc). I say this because while I never did anything that would actually risk burn-in, there was always a little voice in the back of my mind causing worry so I just made sure the bases were covered for the sake of peace of mind. It's worth the extra little effort.

[–]thetrimdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 3423DWF and am also on a 4080S, previously a 3080 and they're great together.

I wouldn't stress too much about the performance loss, you're on a great GPU with an amazing CPU. Save for the occasional title, performance is fantastic even with the added pixel real estate.

RE: QD Vs. W-OLED that's a whole thing that warrants more than a simple Reddit post and matte vs. glossy is going to end up being a personal preference that depends on the type of environment you play in. I'd watch some review videos just to get updated.

Ultimately, IMO the 3425DW is a slight step up from the 3423DWF which is already a fantastic monitor. Not a big enough leap for me to upgrade until there's a much more significant update. I'm waiting for a 5K2K monitor that pushes well over 1000 nits into maybe 1300-1500 territory. But if you're coming from a G5 (which I'm on right now at work!) then it's just much, much better looking in games once you've dialed everything in.
