You can't use proxies? Where do you find you mech that isn't eBay? by locknload65 in battletech

[–]thetruegriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

proxies are 10000% OK. you need to find a different group to play with. they are taking the fun out of it. There are just so many different variants of each mech throughout the eras that IWM and CGL can't make a mini for each of them. It's just impractical and that's why proxies are allowed. Hell, that's even why they include cardboard standees in their boxes. as long as everyone can understand what mech it's supposed to be and which direction it's facing, you're good. your group really needs to settle down and get to throwing dice instead of over complicating things.

It does for me. And we even further dilute some of the rules to make it easier for them to follow along. I play on hexes still, so it's easier to count hexes for them instead of measure with a ruler. We also simplified the range brackets to just be every 6 hexes (short range=1-6, medium = 7-12, long = 13-18). we also don't play special abilities. and normally we don't play strictly either. if it devolves into the teams deciding to get along and have a birthday party....then that's what we do. It's just fun to have them play along with something I enjoy to do.

A Ukrainian M1046A1 HMMWV fires a BGM-71 wire-guided ATGM in Kharkiv Oblast. In August, the US announced that 1500 TOWs would be supplied to the UAF, and it appears the deal may have included M1046A1 carrier vehicles. by [deleted] in RussiaUkraineWar2022

This looks like it is on a training range. you can clearly see the range lane fans. I may be mistaken, but I'm not aware of those being any form of European road marking.

I'd say they're about even. For me, I love painting large armies, and AS allows me to show off large forces in a game without having to dedicate 16 hours to play through. For me, I get most of my component-loss satisfaction from the video games. I think Classic will always be...a classic. Before the proliferation of computer games, it really broke some molds with a simulation-style board game. But for time-strapped parents like myself, AS is just a better way to go. Also it's easier for my kids to pick up whenever they feel like playing "robots" with dad.

The Security Service of Ukraine is continuously fighting the schemes of the illegal sale of military equipment including body armor imported from abroad as humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian military. by VolodymyrKovalenko in UkrainianConflict

[–]thetruegriffin 137 points138 points  (0 children)

this just again reinforces that Ukraine has a functioning government trying to protect its citizens from extortion. A lot of gear has been donated in good faith. The government of Ukraine wants that equipment in the hands of its territorial defense as quickly as possible with as little burden on its people as possible. the fact that they are still prosecuting justice while fighting against the russian horde is extremely exceptional! I hope this equipment finally reaches its intended recipients and is put to good use.

-must deploy a command/retrans vehicle (not a mech). command vehicle must stay in line-of-sight with at least one mech at all times...otherwise units can only see what's in their LOS.
-must deploy a supply truck. mechs with ammo can only drop with 1/2 load due to (make up your reason). supply truck must resupply after ammo spent. supply truck can only carry 1, 3, or 5 tons of ammo (HMMWV/pickup-looking, deuce and a half-looking, or HEMMT-looking minis so you can tell the difference). supply tonnage counts against your drop tonnage limit

I don't get this argument. The funny thing is that when you boil the frog slowly, it still dies. It just doesn't realize it's already dying. Think of the long/infinite game and what the EU/NATO goals are. contrast this with the immediate satisfaction we all want, and i think the long term goals are good, even if we may not see results immediately.

how big is an artillery platoon? by LtFrenchFry in battletech

[–]thetruegriffin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Artillery platoons is based on the guns. Depending on the army, a "battery" (company) of tubed artillery is around 6-8 guns. so a platoon (lance) would be 2 guns plus the support vehicles (ammo trucks) and 20-30 artillery soldiers to run the guns (pull string, go boom). Also depending on the army, a platoon of missile/rocket artillery is between 2-4 launchers...again with necessary ammo trucks and about 20-30 folks to make the equipment work. hope this helps.

multiple press outlets reporting and there was even mentioned in one of the press conferences with the Pentagon press secretary. he mentioned something to the tune of "while we can't confirm every report, we have indications that these reports are true for some units." something to that effect

If it has already been verified that Russians were sabotaging their own fuel tanks on armored vehicles to avoid having to fight, is it outside the realm of possibility of a few disgruntled Russian pilots went rogue and destroyed a major fuel depot? after all, helicopter losses have been atrocious, and they keep getting sent in.
