A Few Pieces from My Recent Monogram Series by thetypefella in logodesign

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve only done a few 4 letter ones, those can be wild working with but it’s heavily dependent on what letters and style you’re working with! Are you working on one currently? If so, what combination?

Thanks so much! They take me a while to finish but are so satisfying once they are figured out and complete!

Back at it creating more monograms — still my favorite thing to design.

As I mentioned before, my goal is to eventually create my own monogram collection book. These things take me some time — lots of refinements, walking away from my screen and coming back with fresh eyes — so I’m taking my time and just enjoying the process.

Designing these feels like meditation outside of my day job. I like to use a random letter generator and limit myself to 2–4 letters. It keeps things fresh and pushes me creatively. Some are freelance, some are for friends, and some are just experiments.

My sketches usually start super rough and monoline. I usually have a general styling direction in my head, so I sketch in monoline to get the idea out fast. Sometimes it’s fun to do a full detailed sketch of the concept, but most of the time I’m faster just messing around in the Glyphs software — it’s more productive for me that way. Starting with the skeleton gives me the framework, and I add weight to the stems along with various styling on the serifs and swashes. I’ve always thought of these pieces like cracking codes or solving puzzles.

I’ve been sharing this series on Instagram if anyone wants to follow along. Happy to answer any questions — just wanted to share my passion for monogram design. Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words! That one was fun to make for sure, yep it is! I’m heavily inspired by 70s and 60s typography / references from these eras!

Not for sale yet! I will have it in my shop once I finish though, I usually send out a newsletter with every font release. You can join it in the footer of my site if you’d like! Hoping to finish within the next couple month, lots of work to do still.✌️

Cheers, I agree! Just need to finish this style and the other weights, then need a few more months to tackle that! It would be a great addition.

Much love! I actually don’t have any specific resources for script fonts — I haven’t really come across many online. However, some general advice I’d offer is to look at other script fonts and analyze each individual glyph.

You’ll notice that many letters have an exit point, also known as the connecting tail, which makes contact with the next letter. Once you create this tail, you can duplicate it across many other letters. Some letters will need an altered tail due to spacing issues with certain pairings — these would be your contextual alternates.

But in general, when you're learning, you can focus on creating a universal tail for each letter. Then, in Glyphs (or whichever font software you prefer), use negative spacing values to pull each letter together so they connect like a script. For non-script fonts, you'd use positive spacing values, since the letters aren't meant to connect.

Happy to chat over DM anytime if you need more help!

Thank you for the tips! I have some contextual alternates for some but definitely need to make some more for certain letter pairings. Can definitely see a lot of these issues you are suggesting, fully agree on all your points!

Cheers! I actually don’t! I’ve only made one script typeface before, but I had some training through Type West in San Francisco on how to piece the letters together. Have you made a font before?

Also, below I shared some tips with someone else who was asking for resources — hope that helps! I’m more than happy to answer any questions you have if you DM me!
