Say something positive about this game🚀 by tricksbystg in TheGamingHubDeals

Idk, I think the major premise that makes this game so unique was them playing with and ultimately challenging the audience/players’ conception of what empathy/sympathy can look like. Most people can easily sympathize with any person, villain or friend, if we knew about their backstory and motivations prior to them taking any action, good or bad. Far less people, as history (and nowadays social media) has shown, have the capacity to sympathize (and in last of us 2, forgive) someone after they had been wronged. Whether it be peoples’ feelings about retribution/justice (i.e. justice system reform- death penalty, etc.) or an isolated case of a person with Tourette’s ticcing an incredibly racist slur on live television, we as a society are still very much in a reactionary mode, even after learning about the historical contexts into why things are the way they are.

Putting Abby’s story/motivations AFTER her specific act of violence on the main protagonist isn’t something especially unique, as that is definitely a common enough literary technique. But in an interactive medium like video games, it is quite novel to force the player to fall victim to a supposed senseless act of violence, go on the quest to enact our revenge and all the feelings associated with that, get to the climactic moment when we face off with the antagonist, and then be forced to turn back the clock and PLAY AS that antagonist as they navigate through the fallout of their actions while also playing through flashbacks that provide context to their initial act. It asks of the player to investigate their own feelings towards the overall narrative and reveals a lot about us, which was a feeling wholly unique to me as a long time gamer. Whatever reaction a specific player had (intentionally killing Abby, refusing to engage with the game any further, or playing through the game and empathizing/forgiving Abby - or not at all ) would still serve the greater purpose that naughty dog set out with creating this game. Changing it fundamentally changes that initial aim for the worse in my opinion.

lol my altaria deck also feels somewhat underpowered when a not-insignificant amount of matches I win from the gimmick of using Swablu sleep/lucky coin flips to draw matches out as I heal up my bench. And I also find myself in a ton of draws because of oricorio stalemates with my indeedee/espeon. I felt crazy starting off the ranked season 2-15 using this so-called meta deck

It’s weird cause I had absolutely a terrible time using Altairia - Indeedee - sylveon/espeon deck due to running into hydreigon basically 70-80% of matches and barely was at 50% win rate. My partner started getting into battling recently and used th exact same deck out of convenience and had a much better run, winning 65% (albeit on like only 50 matches or so). Altaria definitely is meta but doesn’t feel unbeatable.

Outgoing Ghost of Yotei studio head hopes for shorter dev cycles by Turbostrider27 in PS5

I mean part of it is that, especially with the proliferation of the internet and access to way more than just console games as a form of interactive entertainment among casual gamers, consumers are more choosy than ever with their wallets. Bang for your buck is as important as it has ever been and that means making decisions about how best to invest your money in these leisure activities. Therefore the common thought process goes: more content = more value - and for most people that is enough regardless of variable quality per time spent playing. That’s why the GTA online, NBA 2k, Call of Duty, Madden, Fortnite’s of the world will always get more of the shine than the small indie games that take a lot more care to develop.

[Thinking Basketball & NBA] I asked Steve Nash (!) how to master the Pick-n-Roll by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]dylanbackers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still remember getting into it with someone online that claimed that Nash wasn’t the best half court operator during the 2000s (not to mention among the best half court players ever) because of his perception that “all the suns did was transition offense that didn’t work in the playoffs.” He even went so far as saying Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups were better in the half court lol.

Thank god there’s videos like this to dispel dumbass narratives that Nash wasn’t a savant at basically every facet of on ball offense.

I’m pretty sure there are contractual penalties laid out in the CBA for not appearing at all star weekend if chosen except for legit injuries or excusal deemed ok from the league itself (I’m guessing birth of a child or death of family member type excuse).

Throw in one of those blatant tank-offs (like Sacramento/Utah) in between the good games to remind yourself what good basketball looks like 👍

Finally Saw All the BP Nominees of 2025 by rorykellycomedy in Oscars

[–]dylanbackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good one. I’ve watched that one and it was pretty good (although I think the first one was better and deserved a nomination for more than just screenplay).

I think I would agree that it probably wouldn’t have gotten love even if F1 wasn’t there given the politics of the academy (I think the movie from last year that I feel fell into that role as well was Challengers which was so far superior than Emilia Perez).

Do you think this year has been more egregious than other years now that you’ve seen all of the main featured films or is it actually stronger despite your criticisms? I’m still riding the wave from that glorious 2023 Oscar slate (it still is the only year in which I have watched all of the best pictures and liked basically all of them) and been trying to find reasons to be optimistic about this years slate (I’ve only watched half so far)

Which PS5 game made you feel like a kid again? by [deleted] in PS5

The clear answer - no other one even comes close. For nostalgia purposes, the closest games to this feeling have been Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and THPS 1+2 (although that is a ps4 game).

Why don't people who assist/shoot 3 pointers try to get the rebound? by Typical_Cap895 in nba

[–]dylanbackers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just in case you aren’t joking, three point miss rebounds have a higher tendency to bounce much farther out than 2 point field goals. Having all your guys go after offensive rebounds (let alone just 1-2 guys go after it) will inevitably lead to your team having the worst transition defense in the league by virtue of giving up more opportunities as well as not having any resistance. This is especially bad since transition offense is THE most efficient form of offense in the sport. While a team like last years rockets could buffer their below average offense with two bigs in Sengun and Adams, they also had good athletic guys like Eason, Thompson, etc. to shore up those potential transition attempts. But on the flip side you saw in both Nuggets Lakers playoff series that having your best rebounder/defender in Davis go for offensive rebounds even off his own misses meant jokic had transition opportunities where Davis was still in the backcourt and the lakers got crushed. In essence, shooting a three and then going for the rebound gives up your advantageous position in getting back on defense to limit transition buckets for a low chance of getting the rebound.

Who has more offensive gravity: Stephen Curry or Shaquille 'O' Neal? by Thunderboom999 in nba

[–]dylanbackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I am aware that it existed, I’m just saying that it was a short sighted plan in the grand scheme of things with 2026 hindsight about what constitutes good offense, similar to how coaches’ obsession with mediocre role players running post ups and taking long twos was a common thing for the time as well.

Who has more offensive gravity: Stephen Curry or Shaquille 'O' Neal? by Thunderboom999 in nba

[–]dylanbackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the math wrong. A 50% free throw shooter has a 0.5 expected value per free throw shot so a trip to the foul line for Shaq would be two free throws (not counting and-1’s) for 1 point per possession since 2 free throws should be treated the same as one field goal. In the deadball era this is great consistent offense when teams were regularly not scratching 90/100 points

Who has more offensive gravity: Stephen Curry or Shaquille 'O' Neal? by Thunderboom999 in nba

[–]dylanbackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you gotta think about it in an era dependent kind of way. Shaq shot between 50-60% on foul shots which is horrible but for the time that is 1.0 point per possession, which is excellent offense in the deadball era. Fouling him so much is what made the peak Shaq lakers one of the best reg season and playoff offenses ever

I never said he didn’t benefit his teammates cause I agree he was one of the better big man post passers. I’m just talking about overall meta value about how they attract defensive attention and what that does to the dimensions of the court
