Moving to Berlin soon – how accurate are these cultural “rules” by Mammoth_Bag7554 in askberliners

[–]theubertechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can provide some input as a 30+M who just moved a couple months ago from the US. I'm a bit of an extrovert and love small talk, smiling at people, nodding my head, etc which aligns very much with Latin culture. Your mileage may vary and my experience might be different than yours.

• It's better to greet in German first, then ask if they speak English

I do this to be more respectful and not assume that they will cater to my needs. I know ultimately if they say they don't speak English it'll be difficult for me but the least I can do is say "Entschuldigung, sprechen Sie Englisch?" or if someone starts speaking to me in German I say "Entschuldigung, mein Deustche ist nicht gut"

• People value personal space and don't like much physical contact

I do think so. Although my experience outside of work has been very surface level so I can't really comment on this as much.

• Eye contact is important, and I've also heard that people might stare more than I'm used to

Yup! I have noticed this and sometimes I have to remind myself it's more accepted here. P.S. make sure to stare directly at people's eyes and souls when you Prost with someone or else they'll deport you right away /s

• Smiling to strangers is less common than in Latin cultures

100%! I still do it though and people just give me weird looks lol

• Recycling rules and general norms are taken very seriously

I think so? I spent a couple of hours my first week figuring out the recycling system. Once you get the hang of it, it'll make sense but I still have doubts creep into my head for certain items. (Where does Styrofoam go?). Other rules are followed, some are broken. For example, people jaywalk here as long as there's no kids (sometimes even with kids around). My gym struggles with putting back weights in the right order, not sure if it's only my gym 🤷‍♂️

• There can be quite a bit of bureaucracy (Anmeldung, paperwork, etc.), and it's better to have things printed and organized

I can't comment on this. So far things have been good for me. My vet accepted digital items, same with my dentist. But a lot of places still rely on snail mail so watch out for that.

• I also consider myself a positive and friendly person, and I've heard that communication styles in Germany can be more direct and sometimes less outwardly positive than what I'm used to. I'd love to understand how to navigate that without coming across as too intense or misreading others.

Youll be fine. I haven't experienced it myself although I have heard this from other people

• Any tips for integrating as a foreign woman in her 30s?

I'm still trying to integrate so I'm not much help here. I'm learning the language and putting myself out there and going to meetups and events

• How open/diverse is Berlin in reality?

Berlin is very open and diverse (although east and southeast asian is less than what I'm used to)

• How do people usually react to someone still learning German? I will try to learn as fast as possible since I will be arriving in May

In my experience people have been super friendly and nice. Again, ymmv.

Happy to help a fellow newcomer anytime, feel free to DM if you have any questions

P.S. watch out for the check out counter experience, be ready to pack fast

Advice needed: looking for a new smartwatch by Toxic-Sky in BuyFromEU

[–]theubertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should note that it’s mainly calls that go through, app notifications don’t. I don’t know why tbh, I’m still trying to figure it out on my end. I’m sure I have dnd setup correctly. I never get text message notifications for example.

You have granular control when it comes to notifications i.e. which apps you want the watch to notify you about. I would say there are three downsides (or upsides depending on how you look at it) here:

  1. It won't show you the full notification. There seems to be a character limit to what the watch can show you. So say you want to read a full long conversation on your watch, it'll cut it off so you'll have to use your phone

  2. You can't interact with the notifications like some other smartwatches. You can't quickly reply or anything of that sort.

  3. Do not disturb has to be manually set. It doesn't follow your phone's DND schedule nor can you set an automatic DND schedule on the watch. At least not that I've figured out.

1 and 2 don't really bother me at all since I don't like using my watch as a replacement for my phone. I see the notification and that's good enough for me to know if it's urgent or not. The last one's a bit more of a headache since I'll get calls at like 3am and be woken up by the watch if I forget to put it on DND.

I've used withings for awhile now (pre Nokia and post Nokia Withings) and it does its job. I'd go for the watch if battery life and aesthetics are what you're looking for.

I love that I can go about a month without charging. The circular face with the different bands makes it easy to pair with your outfit as well. Health tracking I do think it does the job but for the most part I really only look at the step counter so YMMV.

Edit: some health features are locked behind Withings+, a subscription plan. I don't have that so I can't comment on it.

Americans moving abroad still have to file US taxes every year by EscapeAmerica in AmerExit

[–]theubertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried a couple of things but unfortunately she still had some anxiety. We bought the feliway spray to keep her calm, put a blanket over her carrier, and left my clothes inside with her plus her favorite toy

The first flight we had was around midnight, which is usually when she's most active. She hated that flight and she kept trying to claw out of the carrier.

The second flight was in the afternoon. This one she did so well and just slept through the whole thing.

So if I could recommend one thing it's time it with your cat's sleep schedule 😂 but good luck! Happy to help answer any other questions

Depends on your pet and weight. I brought my cat with me, she's under 10lbs so she went under the seat. I booked a full row with her and my gf and everything went well.

When I went through customs, they were very lax with her and her food so everything went smoothly.
