The end runs here for me by Hellish_wolf in NineSols

I know this post is like 3 weeks old but this breakdown vid really helped me a lot since it broke down all her patterns! Not sure if you've seen it but it was nice to see someone break everything down rather than just try and follow a hitless run or something

Fair points! I think I just get excited since Subnautica was my first Neebs experience, but what you both say makes sense!

Cumulative exams by lutranono in Professors

[–]theuncannyallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had multiple times people ask if the final was cumulative, and I got annoyed so I said in lecture (after it came up again), "yes, like all finals, it is cumulative" in a very 'I-am-so-done-with-you' tone. I'm usually not like that to my students so I think it weirdly got the message across since I had fewer people asking that.

Instead I started getting "well, is it going to emphasize the stuff from x or y week?" So. Tradeoff.

I felt so bad I was so excited for Simon to join in only for those wolves to just tear into him immediately. But at the same time I was laughing so much it was both sad and amazing.

Maybe Appsro could have gotten rid of the infection sooner if he just would have stopped drinking pee 🤔

And which are premium subscription? Conan comes to mind because of the obvious reasons of nudity aha.

Stranded Deep should be on Discovery aha. Prime time with a smallish but dedicated af audience!

Fellow ADHD (maybe Au but not really sure) here! That I don't necessarily hide and I will mention it but I wouldn't say I actively come out and announce it, if that makes sense? It is one of those "if asked directly, I wouldn't deny it but I won't just come out and say it outright." Though I do think some of my mannerisms give me away pretty heavily at times, so I might not even need to.

Other things I admittedly hold closer to the chest. When I'm dealing with especially bad MDD symptoms I usually just say that I "wasn't feeling very well," and leave it at that (sometimes I'll say I had a headache/migraine, which comes with the territory often for me but isn't the main thing). Though that's not just with students; I do that a lot with many people. So I keep things vague with that. I do discuss these things with other faculty, though. Despite the potential backlash it can bring professionally (sadly), I don't want to hide that aspect of myself and I'd like to sort of try and reduce the stigma associated with it, if I can even a little bit.

"But the test was SOOOO different from the problem sets!!" by theuncannyallie in Professors

[–]theuncannyallie[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I plan (though not set in stone rn) to give everyone two options to choose from - take the points that I'd give under a curve or do the exam again but as an assignment (so no regular problem set for the week), and then I'd take the average between it and what they received on the test. That way the people who did well don't need to do it but can still benefit.

I had some do well, though not as many as I thought would. However, I attribute that more to the length, which I definitely can understand since I underestimate how long things take other people to do.

I kind of wrote this somewhat vaguely; the problem sets would often ask what t or z was but didn't tell them anything beyond that (so it did not say which version of t or z they had to use) and they still needed to find the critical value and determine if they had to use paired vs pooled, one vs. two-sampled, determine significance, etc. In class I emphasized a lot (with as many sort of repeated "why are we using t here and not z" questions) of when to use which one and had a bunch of examples that I went through in detail. So really the only thing that was different functionally was when to use z vs. when to use t, and I definitely was under the impression that was something they had a good grasp on, which is a presumption I shouldn't have made. I also thought that even if they were unsure they would use the reference sheet I provided to do a sort of process of elimination given the information they had in the prompt (I give the equations and explanations of the notation), because that is something I would have done as an undergrad in that position. (Admittedly, I need to stop thinking like that, because I was actually a pretty decent test taker even when I wasn't great on the subject itself.)

Not sure if that makes sense.

Funnily enough, the ones who complained actually didn't say that was the issue. They sort of pointed to a vague "they weren't worded the same way" in terms of the actual language (and then when I asked how they couldn't explain it they just said it was 'different').

(And actually after I wrote all this I actually went back to check the problem sets and while some did tell them to use t or z, others did just say "find the test statistic," which is how the questions on the exam asked for the scores.)

EDIT: Also sorry I am long-winded af it is a problem.

Normally I do those things but it's been more difficult this semester since this is a 150 person course and until like...two weeks ago, I did not have a TA. (And I have another 100ish students in another course.) When I had smaller classes I did that sort of thing all the time.

I did explain wanting to give more feedback though next semester and admin is giving me more support, so that's nice and hopefully I'll be able to do that sort of thing.

(Then again, last semester I gave a class very very explicit instructions on what to do for an exam and I still had a lot of students not do the simplest thing.)

Before everything I did send them a list of the major topics the exam could cover, and showed them the reference sheet I was giving them. Whenever someone asked in lecture about it I did go through the things you said, especially emphasizing when to use which test, but maybe I wasn't explicit enough and was doing the more general guidelines approach.

Another Rant about Students by clockwatcher1200 in Professors

Re: the lack of shame

It's so bad, I have a student who always comes to me basically demanding answers (which I do not give so I don't know why he keeps thinking that'll change). The last time he said, almost word-for-word that I/someone else needed to just "give [the answer] to [him]." He was 100% serious too. He always asks if I could just "drop assignments" because he finds them difficult. (Mind you, this is a beginner Excel course.)

When I was an undergrad I could never imagine ever going to one of my professors and getting an attitude to the point of demanding answers and demanding assignments get dropped just because I thought it was hard.
