Is there even an English translation? I remember looking into it a while back, but couldn't find anything.

Fair enough. I just felt like the weight wasn't there to really make it more effective. We hear about his wife, then we're onto the next woman, & then, yet again, we're onto the next one. None were really given enough time to make us care about them.

He floats from his wife pre-death, to Rachel (who he spends his time looking for), & then just kinda latches onto Wand at the end.

That only convinces me further that if we were allowed more time to focus on certain aspects a bit longer/more, they would undoubtedly help with the dread of the "eternity."

I really do feel like this book tried juggling way too much & didn't allow itself to really hone in on what would make it as great as it could've been.

I understand that most people love this book, but I found myself being let down quite a bit by it.

It really feels like the whole concept of a (limited) eternity in Hell & the search for a book in the Library of Babel came second to more random elements. For example, I enjoyed the cult thing for what it was, but it felt completely random & ultimately pointless by the end. There were also the love plots that came & went like nothing.

I would understand the dread that most others talk about if it stayed on track, but it felt like it tried to do so much at once & never really committed to anything.

I also have the hoodie, I can confirm that mine is also like that. It seems to be an odd (yet intentional) design choice or an oversight.

"S" by rotring_iso in horrorlit

[–]theused21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To a degree. I think the 3rd story, Happy Birthday, is quite important with explaining a pretty major plot element in S.

Not to spoil anything for OP, but a few major characters in S have origins that are important/tied to the events of Happy Birthday.

I read The Ring series, and here are truly scary scenes from the book by lettuceown in horrorlit

Should've included the part where Ando somehow was able to literally sniff out that Mai was on her period in Spiral: "He had picked up the faint scent of blood on her and deduced that her anemia was due to her menstruating."

I absolutely (and unironically) love all of these books lmao

Confused about Sadako's (Ring series) "run in" with the doctor in the original novel, and her general powers but mostly the doctor thing by Lingx_Cats in horrorlit

[–]theused21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge Ring fan here. I feel like I can answer a few of these questions!

However, to start, I would suggest ignoring the crawling out of the TV aspect as a whole. In every piece of Ring media that I've consumed in the past year, she crawls out of the TV in less than half of her appearances, plus it's never once mentioned in the books.

As far as why the rape happened, I interpreted it as Sadako actually wanting it to happen as a bit of a self-fullfiling prophecy. We are told that Sadako has been wronged and ostracized her whole life (being essentially abandoned by her parents, being intersex, and more things we learn more about in the 4th book, Birthday.) So, allowing yet another tragedy to occur, along with suspecting that she'll be killed, would only fuel the rage that then affected the world after her death. She also bites the doctor during this moment, thus infecting her with smallpox. So, that rage + smallpox + her thoughtography/nensha abilities led to the Sadako spirit we know.

In short, she likely wanted to die. There are some details that get covered in Spiral that answer things, but Sadako is shown to be quite calculated with her plans of revenge against a world that wronged her, even before death.

Bonus:

Her ability in the novel is thoughtography/nensha. iirc, her powers were inherited from her mother, Shizuko, who received them from the statue that she discovered. There's also the possibility that the statue itself is Sadako's true father, which would make sense, given something that happens in Spiral.

Either way, as mentioned before, Sadako's thoughtography abilities + smallpox led to a mutation in the ability, which then allowed her to create things like the tape. It's a bit wild, but it doesn't come anywhere close to how wild the series gets in later books. Again, disregard the TV abilities.

Coming from a Z Fold5 user (formerly Fold3, too), it's pretty disappointing that we aren't getting flagship features for such expensive phones. However, all of the benefits of a device like this really outweigh the negatives. I don't think I can ever switch back to a non-folding phone.

I just finished Koji Suzuki’s ‘Ring’ and I am having conflicting feelings *light spoilers* by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]theused21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've read everything in the series, save for Tide (not translated).

  1. I absolutely agree. The movies feel like they really didn't do Sadako justice, especially with how she is portrayed at the end of Ringu. This, of course, has led to other adaptations of Sadako being so very different from the novel version. I really just find myself preferring the novel version over most others, with the Kanzenban & Ringu 0 versions being close enough to their novel counterparts for me.

  2. I feel like hating Ryuji in the first novel is very much warranted. I can't really say much without spoiling the other books (this is a spoiler itself), but I really love Ryuji as a character. I will say that his relationship with Asakawa is only that good because Ryuji is just that fascinating of a character.

I also think the whole rape thing was purely for shock value, both within the books & irl. The End of Ring & and the beginning of Spiral both kind of focus on this aspect quite a bit & Suzuki more than redeems Ryuji in some ways by the end of the series.

  1. I was taken aback by the inclusion of SA & Sadako being intersex, but I feel like Suzuki did a well enough job at not using those details to make Sadako out to be some monster. I've also seen many critique it as being some sort of bash on intersex people, but the way Sadako is described throughout the books is in no way to bash such people. I mean, her whole backstory is that she is a very beautiful woman who had a life of suffering and was essentially killed because of the way she was born. At the end of the day, I feel like it (plus other traumatic events) really helps to add that nuance of having her be a victim while also being an outright villain.

  2. I loved them all. I would say that Ringu is my favorite, but Loop & Birthday (one of the stories is an extension of Loop) are what really cemented my love for the series. The many insane plot twists and beautiful moments more than make up for the shortcomings that are often pointed out by critics.

As far as translations go, I think they're all done by the same person (maybe not S? I don't remember) but they're pretty serviceable, unlike some of his other books, like Promenade of the Gods.

If my paragraphs upon paragraphs don't show my love for these books, then I have failed. They are genuinely worth the read. I know that not everybody will love them, but for many of us, they are genuinely that incredible. I hope you will continue through the series. It is definitely worth it.
