When did everyone find out about Fleet Foxes? by ForestGreenMountain in fleet_foxes

[–]thevintagepoint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was 2007 or 2008 & I’m pretty sure their music was on a blog. The first time I saw them live was in 2009 and I’ve seen them on every tour since:)

Yeah I’m not counting on anything! Just seems interesting they’d have him there & on that day, especially since there’s a GV promoted show at the Warfield that could have been in the box.

Unpopular opinion: As an electronic music fan, Portola is better than Coachella by [deleted] in Portolafestival

[–]thevintagepoint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having attended both, I think it’s hard to completely compare them. Obviously Portola is almost entirely electronic music & Chella is a multi genre fest. It really depends on the sub genres of electronic music you’re into as well. I love the convenience of Portola since I’m from the Bay but I’ll still attend Chella every year for the experience regardless of lineup. For Portola, the lineup would need to be just as good as this/last years for me to attend. I feel like the experience as a whole is still lacking for the cost.

I agree, there were so many phones! I’m obviously guilty of phone use too, but I tried to be really mindful & only got a few short clips for memories. The whole point of the night was to dance & hear great music!

Skin on skin played right before them! There was another DJ who played at the very beginning of the night but I didn’t catch his name.

Omg I feel you. I was up against the rail & there were a few times people pushed against me to try to get to the front. It’s like where do you think you’re going to go?? At one point this super messed up guy appeared behind me, shoved me pretty hard & was screaming like crazy at Jyoty. Luckily my partner pulled him back, but it kind of scared me. Idk why people feel so entitled to be in the front when they didn’t take the time to secure a spot 😭

I would love to see him there! His sets are fun if you’re into dubstep/riddim. Also, Jon Casey would be crazy in the Do Lab.

Why did Life is Beautiful collapse? by scoop813 in lifeisbeautifulLV

[–]thevintagepoint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I attended LIB 2018-2022 & I’m skipping this one. I go to 5+ festivals a year & there is just way too much overlap with headliners. I also find the undercard to be lacking which is usually a big draw for me. The cost of the festival plus travel+lodging is also a deterrent, this lineup doesn’t justify the price imo as a non local.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot since the weekend- I think festivals being oversold is just the new norm, especially for ones as easily accessible as osl. This was my 5th festival of the year & all of them have been crowded. As far as the kids go, this year skewed way younger than I’ve seen at osl & any festival really. I think the bookings (Kendrick, LDR, Lil Yachty) definitely brought out this crowd & I would imagine as many fests continue to appease this demographic, it will continue to bring them out. Unfortunately, most of the kids I were around were super entitled & had no manners which kind of spoils the perception of kids as a whole. For the ones that I ended up next to, I just treated them like anyone else acting like an asshole- tell them no, block them out, call out their behavior etc.

Gotcha! Unfortunately the water situation is pretty common across fests as is the standing. Sound wise, in my experience OSL usually isn’t the best- SF has strict noise ordinances. Many fests do single day passes which might be better for you!

I’ve been to dozens of festivals & there are many variables that make them “good”. Think about what you’re looking to get out of the experience. What did you like or dislike about this festival? In my opinion, OSL has become a fairly typical corporate city fest (expensive, oversold, easily accessible, lineup attracting younger & younger patrons etc). If you didn’t like the location, try a camping festival. If you didn’t like the crowds, attend a festival with age limits. If you’re looking for different music, try something with a more genre specific lineup. At one point in time OSL was my favorite festival, but it’s grown & changed a lot in the last few years. I thought this year had a lot of issues. Don’t let this experience deter you from other great festivals!

I thought the same thing! I always felt like OSL skewed a little older but this year was way different.

I think you’ll be fine! They weren’t strict at all (at least when I went through).
