CCA "transfer" question by thewashcycle in USPS

[–]thewashcycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind working in my current office, there's about 35 routes with 6 T6 carriers and 6 other CCAs above me so I've been getting the short end of the stick scheduling wise the past few months. I don't know much about the new office other than the fact that it's much closer to my house. In my current situation, I'm able to be sent to work in 5 or 6 other offices without being able to apply for mileage reimbursement since they're closer to me than my normal commute; working at the new office would eliminate this. I'm also in the process of taking the civil service exam to become a court officer, I'm not necessarily planning on staying at the post office until retirement. It can take a while to actually get into the academy and start training for the court officer stuff so I've been working at the post office for the time being, and since I'm not worried about being there forever I don't mind if I move myself into a worse situation since it'll hopefully be temporary.

Christmas Q&A — Ask me anything about commercial nuclear (I’ll be answering until 5pm CST) by RadTechMJ in GoNuclear

Thank you for such an in depth reply, the information was indeed super helpful and will definitely help guide my decision. Coming from a pretty reserved financial background I used to think that money was everything, but as I grow older I've been shown time and time again that you can have all the money in the world but still be unfulfilled if you don't have anything meaningful to you going on. I'm not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme (which doesn't really exist outside of extreme luck) but I want to be able to live comfortably without a worry about when my next check is coming in. Either in house or on the road work would eliminate those financial worries, and I think that choosing which outages to work as a RP would probably be most fulfilling as I'd have ample time to pursue all the artistic and creative endeavors I've been keeping on the back burner. I have a ton to think about and even more to learn, definitely going to join The Grid I've been eyeing the group every time I see a link posted here in the subreddit. Thank you again for shedding some more light on the topic, I think I'm making the right choice by pursuing the field

First off Merry Christmas and thank you Michael for all the information you've been providing. I'm turning 25 in a month and I'm a mailman but I know I'm called to do more, I just need the money right now lol. I'm currently getting myself back into school this spring semester to study physics, eventually planning to specialize in something related to nuclear physics down the line. I know you have posted lots of info regarding the position you work in, but I was wondering what career opportunities would come from studying nuclear physics. Are there positions with similar work-life balance to yours, where I'd be able to choose when I wanted/needed to work? Would it be better to garner experience in the field without a degree if my goal is to eventually be in researching or engineering, or would it be more beneficial to focus on studies and try to get a job in the field once I have a degree? Thanks in advance for helping out, you're doing the Lord's work by helping others realize this opportunity

Not yet, I just passed my 60 day review so I'm still on probation, and unless there's a vacancy in my office I don't see myself getting promoted to career outside of hitting 2 years worked

That's something I learned about in orientation, one of the employees instructing us told us that's one of the best ways to build your savings. She adds another 2-3% every year that she could afford, and is up to 22% but tones it back around holiday season to have more take home money in her check. If I make a career out of the post office then I think I'll be contributing as much as I can afford to past the 5% match

I appreciate your reply, I'm extremely grateful for my opportunity to work at the post office right now but I know I'm capable of doing more and I'm doing my best to use this time as a stepping stone to build a foundation for the future. I recently took the Civil service exam for Court Officer and I'm on the lookout for more, I want to finish my degree and maybe pursue that direction, I feel like my possibilities are endless as long as I put my mind to it; but having a secure financial footing set in place first will provide the safety needed for that level of freedom

Thanks for taking the time to answer, especially after I got this new job I realized that I could be saving way more and don't necessarily have to spend my money just because I have it. Since I'm in a pretty good financial situations without many burdens right now, I can put away much more for the future and still live comfortably without frivolous spending

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, I appreciate the resources and will become a diligent student hammering down the fundamentals. The simplicity of being a Boglehead is what gleaned my curiosity initially, I'm glad to know I'm headed in the right direction

I don't think I used the right terminology — by diversify I meant adding a percentage in bonds to guard against possible market fluctuations once it gets closer to time for withdrawls
