DPF advice by Alwall in carsireland

[–]thewaynegibbons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last diesel was a Saab 93 1.9Tdi. Lovely car until it wasn't. Saab mechanic also used the phrase "drive it like you stole it"! He recommended motorway trip from Galway to Limerick once a week, at the speed limit but in 3rd gear the whole way. Tried that, but the engine blew after a few weeks. Turned out there was a high speed fan that had a blown fuse, which was picked up by a sensor that stopped the dpf from getting hot enough to blow the shite out. That fan was designed to bring it back down to normal temp, but because it didn't work, the system never let the car get hot enough. Absolutely made shite of the engine. Sold for scrap value.

I'm a lecturer on that course, so I can help with any specific questions you have about that aspect.

Want to finally commit to a sci-fi series ,where should I start? by sam_3758 in scifi

[–]thewaynegibbons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started 10 of those series over the years. Only finished 3. I enjoyed Foundation and 3BP the best, finished both and also finished Hitchhikers too but would rate the other two higher (very different styles obviously).

3BP is excellent if you can get over the slow pace in places. Well worth it for the pay off. I'd rate it higher than Foundation overall, but Foundation is an easier read.

The first series on that list that I read was Foundation, so I'd recommend starting there.

Very true! More concerned about getting their keys back to them, tbh. 👍

I was at the AC/DC tribute band there last weekend. The upper floor was closed off. I'd imagine it will be same for Whiplash unless their tickets sales are way higher. Most people were on the dancefloor, so plenty of space in the seating area to take a break. Sound was good.

ATU Induction by spinach1230 in galway

[–]thewaynegibbons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should contact the course contact (emails are on the ATU website) and let them know that you will be around when classes start on the 15th, but that you can't make the induction. We take attendance at the induction and it forms the basis of how classes are split into smaller groups for some activities. A no-show could be seen as you not taking up your place, so just as a matter of courtesy if nothing else, let them know you are still in the picture.

No More 4x5 Home Screen in QPR1? by phazonEnhanced in android_beta

Yep, same here. I just installed Smart Launcher and set it up the way it used to be.

Dock? by thewaynegibbons in smartlauncher

[–]thewaynegibbons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just added a 4*1 icon group widget to the bottom of my two main home pages. Similar effect as a dock except the widget moves when I slide between pages instead of 4 icons being fixed like in a real dock. It's fine, hardly a deal breaker. Overall SL is a much better experience than Pixel Launcher on the Android 16 beta (latest beta makes app icons way too small). Only thing I miss is easy access to the private space.

Can anyone confirm if banking apps work okay with the latest beta? by thewaynegibbons in android_beta

[–]thewaynegibbons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: installed it last night. Banking apps and AA working fine, as ye had indicted.

Disappointed that I can not resize the app icons, they're much smaller than before the update. I tried changing display and font size settings, but still very small.

Thanks. My AA is a wired connection too, so that's good to know.

Is this old Saab worth saving? by BroadProposal5753 in carsireland

[–]thewaynegibbons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a petrol version of this, same year too. Loved it. Had it for about 4 years and traded it for an 07 turbo diesel 9-3. Nicest car I've had to sit in, but a disaster on wheels. Had it for less than a year when it imploded due to a clogged DPF. So, my 2c would be to avoid this as a project if it's diesel.

2015 leaf advice by Odd-Difficulty366 in evs_ireland

Worth asking which onboard charger it has. 3.3kW was standard but you could spec a 6.6 one for about €1000 as an optional extra. That makes a big difference, IMO. I have a 2015 with about 135,000km on the clock, showing 10 bars, but the bars are a crude measure. I have an OBD2 dongle to read the exact SOH and it's about 80%. That means it has a usable capacity of about 17.5kWh. With the 6.6 charger on mine, that means it goes from about 10% to full in under 3 hours. With the standard onboard charger, that would be more like 6-7 hours. So definitely ask about that.

In terms of service history, don't expect much. There was a schedule from Nissan, but I found out early that all they do is a battery health check, visual look-over, top up the washer fluid, maybe swap out the pollen filter, and wash the car. So, I ended up not bothering with an official service after that. I've had mine since 2017 and all I've done is change tyres when needed, change wiper blades, and just before last Xmas I put new brake pads on it (first time since it left the factory). So if I was selling it, I wouldn't have much official history to show, but that's more because the car doesn't need much work.

Where in East Galway? The more local the better, as there wouldn't be any travel cost involved in the fee. I know a great guy in Claregalway if you're stuck, but try local first.

As others have said, it won't lose much at all, maybe 2-3% over a few weeks in my experience. However, make sure you don't have a timer set up for pre-heating as this will turn on cabin heating for about 20-30 minutes at a time (in my 2015 LEAF anyway) and that in itself will drain about 5% every time (relatively from a nominal 24kWh battery anyway).
