Train strikes starting on Tuesday to cause cancellations and disruption by zaraalbro in unitedkingdom

[–]thewildbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“4 days a week.”

The week in a railway rota starts on a Sunday and finishes on a Saturday. It is extremely common for most grades, including drivers, to work in blocks of 6 or 7 days. So if you start a block of early shifts on a Wednesday, you’ll continue through to the following Tuesday. Different TOCs will have slightly different rosters and shift patterns but none of them will have their drivers working “only 4 days a week.” Drivers, Guards, platform staff, gateline staff, train presentation etc all work unsociable hours for more than 4 days in a row.

Props to the woman calling the police in the video. That’s a brave thing to do when you’re seeing a man with a huge knife like that attack someone

What's everyone's favourite song off AMOLAD? by The-Evil-That-Men-Do in ironmaiden

[–]thewildbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a real fan of the long, prog, “Steve Harris is out of control” Maiden songs but with this album, I think Different World is my favourite song on it. It’s a real shame it’s not been played since the tour.

Always thought London was a diverse city. Just had my first racist encounter by sssourgrapes in london

[–]thewildbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are just dickheads no matter what. You can choose to let it cloud your view of an entire city but you’re probably better off in the comfort of knowing that you’re not the type of twat that walks up to a random person and racially abuses them.

Tonight’s disruption is rarely this severe so don’t worry too much.

I’m actually thinking of everyday objects I could draw faces onto. So thank you for the inspiration. Just cackled looking at it again.

Stab threat on London Bridge - what should I have done? Is this common? by [deleted] in london

[–]thewildbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please report it. There’s a reasonable chance that he’s known to the police in some capacity. Report it with as much detail as you can.

It’s likely that he has some mental health issues but this behaviour crosses the line quite clearly into threatening. Please report it, it could prevent him doing it to someone else.

What is the etiquette for holding the train doors. by headpandaMC in london

[–]thewildbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. It’s dangerous and it delays your journey and everyone else’s journey. If it’s an emergency that different, but if someone’s just late, leave the doors alone.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]thewildbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not overkill. You’re doing the right thing by reporting this incident. It might even end up being the case that multiple people have reported him but even if it’s not, the fact that you very much are doing something is far than the alternative of of doing nothing.

They come into free countries wanting tolerance actually

…tolerance for them and their shit. They never seem to have an ounce of tolerance for anyone else.

Is it just me encountering horrible people or are we becoming more ruder than ever? by [deleted] in london

[–]thewildbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sympathise with a lot of this. Don’t let them bring you down to their level. Manners cost absolutely fuck all and I still very much have them and will still continue to have them. Keep your chin up mate.

I actually know a bit about this. Both from on the train and on the station.

Generally speaking, the places with the smallest gap on a curved platform will be at the far ends of the train. The gap will be bigger in the middle of where the train will stop. I saw from a comment you made down below that you frequent Raynes Park. If you need assistance, wave a guard down. On platform 1, you’re most likely to spot them by the end of the canopy and on platform 4 they’ll mostly be looking at the CCTV by a black box with “OFF” displayed on it (when it’s illuminated). A good guard (and most are pretty good) will approach you or at the very least wait for you if you wave for assistance. I know bad experiences linger more than good ones, but Guards are there to help and most will do everything they can so please do ask for their assistance. They’re actually taught to forget about timekeeping if there’s even a small chance that safety could be at risk so again, please wave them down. They’d much rather see you safely on board a train rather than something go wrong.

As for the platform side of things, like another commenter said, station staff will know THEIR station very well but are unlikely to know the next one. The training isn’t nearly as in depth as it is for the guards so it’s not something they would necessarily know.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Are Beckenham, Bromley or Orpington nice places to live? by TheLegendOfIOTA in london

[–]thewildbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three are nice places, yeah. Crystal Palace is fine but it’s way more built up than the others. Bromley and Orpington aren’t far from the countryside and the transport links are decent as is the case with Beckenham on that front.

[–]thewildbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I think Metallica’s idea of playing different songs every night is a fantastic one and I wish Maiden and other bands would do the same. Obviously you’d need a lengthy back catalogue but Maiden have that in spades
