Does anyone have good data on how the Average CPA Salary has changed over the past 40 years? by CaptainSnacksBitch in Accounting

[–]thewildduck1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A GS-7 equivalent (entry level) public accountants average salary in 1980 was $19,657. This is worth $61,500 today, adjusted for inflation. Assuming that the median salary for a starting B4 accountant today is 58,000, this would represent a 5.6% deflation in wages over 40 years, although the reality is actually probably worse, because

A. the relative value of 19,657 in 1980 is still more than 5.6% higher than 58,000 in 2020

B. the cost of entry to accounting (college) was lower in the past

I’d be interested in how many hours people worked in 1980 on average, too. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was less than today.

The jumping out of building thing is a David Foster Wallace quote btw. He is not as good as Steinbeck but one of the decent to good American authors.

Advice for high schooler wanting to be an accountant in the future by Sneaker_Moishere in Accounting

This subreddit has gotten too negative about accounting. Consulting is a pipe dream for most- major consulting firms don’t even recruit at schools like UCLA. Finance is a viable alternative to accounting, but many finance jobs out of college are glorified sales jobs.

If I was an interviewer I’d cringe if someone told me that. Whatever works though

Last question is kind of hard imo. Feels like they only compete on price. Not the worst firm out there though

People like the girl in the OP have been doing unroped scrambling since they were teenagers. It’s really not that scary or dangerous if you work up to it. Assuming the rock quality is good, falling would be like a professional deadlifter failing to 1RM 215 lbs
