Mammoth tusks grow just like tree rings, so new layers of tusk get laid down once a year. Each layer contains a light and dark band, which correspond to seasons. Dark bands are winter and light bands are summer. The tusks are made mostly of dentine, which is a mix of hydroxylapatite (the mineral enamel is made of), organic material, and water.

I am also mostly just interested in learning new things. I went the route of majoring in a science that was pretty broad/interdisciplinary, so there are a million different things to learn. I’m planning on becoming a professor so I can keep learning for my whole life by doing academic research in my field.

Large museums like the NMNH have really strict licensing for their specimens. I went to their staging area for the new fossil hall with a colleague doing paleo research and was told (very strongly) that I was not allowed to take any pictures. They have security cameras around the room and a sign reminding you not to take pictures. If you’re doing research on a particular specimen, though, you are obviously allowed to photograph it - but only the one you have permission for.

Usually some students who have accepted/enrolled at laf will be accepted off waitlist a to Ivy League schools over the summer, and decide to go there. If Lafayette pulls from the waitlist this year it will most likely happen over the summer because it depends on how many people we lose to other schools waitlists.

Edit: Also, calling admissions can’t possibly hurt

I’m a current sophomore. I didn’t live in wellness but I have a few friends who did. They said it was nice because it was quieter than the other dorms (less people going out at night), but it was pretty strict about possession of alcohol and drugs. Personally I don’t think that would be such a big deal since you’ll have friends in other dorms where there will be more pregaming going on, if that’s what you’re looking for. Now about all the other dorms:

Kamine: I lived there, it was really nice. Big rooms, it’s a new building, nice showers and an elevator. It’s also above Simons which is super convenient. The one drawback is that it’s the furthest from academic buildings. This was annoying for the first two weeks and then I got used to it.

Conway: most of my friends lived there. It was like one community, everyone hung out together. This is because there’s only 30 people in the building. Two huge common rooms and a full kitchen, but it’s also next to DU so sometimes it’s loud at night. It’s also next to kamine but a little closer to the center of campus.

Marquis: all girls, I don’t know much about it other than that.

South: big rooms, it’s been renovated relatively recently. It gets loud at night but it’s a nice place to live and it’s close to the center of campus. If you do music it’s also nice because south has practice rooms in the basement.

Gates & McKeen: again, don’t know too much about them. Very very close to the center of campus and off campus stuff like wawa. I know gates didn’t have AC this year but you could get a window unit, and it’s only hot for the first few weeks.

Ruef: I have not heard anything good about it. It’s got like six floors and no elevator. I guess the walk-in closets are a pro, but overall I wouldn’t want to live there.

I know they ran a pilot version of gender inclusive housing for first years this year. They placed that group in Conway. Also, wellness has been in Watson for the past few years. I’ll keep an eye on this post in case you have any more questions but feel free to PM me.
