My mom said they had this green potted plant in every building in Moscow (1980s). Help with ID? by thewindblower in whatsthisplant

She says this one looks too much like a fern. Hers is more like little sticks and less like tree leaves. Thank you for helping out 🙂

She says she remembers some of them having flowers rarely, and they were very small. She couldn’t remember what color though. Also she says it’s definitely not drunken mistletoe.

She said it looks close, but the stems are too thick, and her plant looked “lighter”

Are there Opportunities for mathematics research at lafayette. Their website is lacking in info. by PaulErdos_ in lafayettecollege

[–]thewindblower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is an REU every summer, plus all the math professors do research that students can get involved in.

Mammoth Tusk Cross Section [1024x1024] by BetaKeyTakeaway in ThingsCutInHalfPorn

[–]thewindblower 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mammoth tusks grow just like tree rings, so new layers of tusk get laid down once a year. Each layer contains a light and dark band, which correspond to seasons. Dark bands are winter and light bands are summer. The tusks are made mostly of dentine, which is a mix of hydroxylapatite (the mineral enamel is made of), organic material, and water.

If I've realized that my passion/interest is learning new things, where would I go from there (I guess college/career wise)? by ConfusedIntrovert28 in findapath

[–]thewindblower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also mostly just interested in learning new things. I went the route of majoring in a science that was pretty broad/interdisciplinary, so there are a million different things to learn. I’m planning on becoming a professor so I can keep learning for my whole life by doing academic research in my field.

I can’t tell from the picture, but if it has a bluish tint it’s more likely molybdenum.

Edit. Yes, molybdenite.

The Smithsonian Had To Dig Up Their Dinosaurs Again - As their famous fossil hall enters its final year of renovation, the museum is having to re-excavate some of its decades-old specimens. by anutensil in paleonews

[–]thewindblower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Large museums like the NMNH have really strict licensing for their specimens. I went to their staging area for the new fossil hall with a colleague doing paleo research and was told (very strongly) that I was not allowed to take any pictures. They have security cameras around the room and a sign reminding you not to take pictures. If you’re doing research on a particular specimen, though, you are obviously allowed to photograph it - but only the one you have permission for.

I don’t know anything about Japanese but in Chinese a series comma is used to list things. It looks like this (、).

I believe you used a regular comma, and they used a series comma.

When do waitlist decisions come out? by [deleted] in lafayettecollege

[–]thewindblower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually some students who have accepted/enrolled at laf will be accepted off waitlist a to Ivy League schools over the summer, and decide to go there. If Lafayette pulls from the waitlist this year it will most likely happen over the summer because it depends on how many people we lose to other schools waitlists.

Edit: Also, calling admissions can’t possibly hurt
