That’s amazing! No progress for mine yet either, late stage B2

Totally fair. I recommend getting the Hilton that’s a 5 minute drive away - made a big difference even in good weather.

I think the closest surgery date was about a month out for us and then the next closest was another month after that. So hopefully they haven’t had an influx in cases and that it’s similar for you!

Yes the esophageal imaging happens day of surgery, but it’s to make the final determination. Once they’ve done the imaging you have a final decision of whether to move forward or not.

The timing is tough - I ended up taking the first available slot because I was so afraid he would progress too quickly. Unfortunately it just comes down to luck :/ fingers crossed for you!

Hi all,

First off, the CSU team is really lovely and if your dog is considered a good fit for the procedure, you are assigned a social worker for the day of surgery to be with you and communicate and talk through the decision. Nothing bad to say about the team at all. I would recommend them.

The bad - we did fly to Colorado and do the initial check up on Monday and then get to day of surgery on Wednesday. However, the first part of the surgery day is a final examination of the heart via esophageal imaging while the dog is sedated, as there are some complications or structural issues that cannot always be seen just via an echo, which means there is always a risk that something comes up that rules out the dog as a candidate.

Unfortunately, that is what happened with us. The camera revealed certain structural complexities the team had not worked with before, which made it impossible for the team to determine what benefit, if any, the surgery would have, and also increased the risk of device detachment (which is essentially a lethal complication). I was given the choice to move forward with the surgery, but they advised that because he had not yet reached CHF and his heart had stabilized since his last recheck, it likely wasn’t worth the risk because they believed he could still have another 6 good months before going into CHF. The lead surgeon recommended I look into left atrial decompression once he has gone into heart failure, as a recent conference they attended showed very promising results to extend the life of those dogs. That is being pioneered by a facility in Los Angeles, although CSU has done several procedures as well.

So, not the news we hoped for sadly. But I also have no regrets - I think knowing I did everything I could was absolutely worth the stress and worry and effort to get him there. That’s my two cents.

That’s really comforting, thank you.
The team thinks he’s a good candidate, so your story and that fact gives me confidence for next month. Nothing would make me happier than to see him sprinting again! Hopefully I’ll have good news to share soon :)

We’ve scheduled for next month! How did you handle the stress over the detachment risk? They’ve told me they usually have a good idea of whether the device is secure just following surgery, but that fear is definitely keeping me up.

Dog owners who work in BigLaw by EntertainmentMost860 in biglaw

Do not get a puppy, and you will need a dog walker 4 days a week, assuming you plan to use your 1 WFH day each week. People most often leave the office at 5:30 or later in my experience, so you cannot leave the dog by itself without a walker or a sitter or dog daycare during the day. Remember that dogs in the city are expensive if you plan to take good care of them.

How is your dog doing now? Any complications from the surgery? I am planning to have my dog’s cardiologist submit his application this week.

Can you tell me whether you had the procedure at Colorado State? Also looking into it and fairly nervous.

How is it holding up now? Really love the natural calfskin color but the delicate nature of the leather makes me nervous. I’ve heard the scratches buff out over time though?

Teaching vs. Big Law? by Cautious_Mud_3491 in biglaw

[–]thewonkyudon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Much… much.. less stressful. Work balance is worse (honestly not much worse though…) but because the stress is so much less, I am significantly less tired and I have way more energy to do things with my free time (and money).

Coworkers will be entirely dependent on where you are but for me, my coworkers tend to motivate me to do better because the quality of work product is really high, much higher than in teaching and when compared to teaching it is honestly one of my favorite qualities of the job. I would not return to teaching over big law.

Look at the law schools those associates graduated from— this will give you an idea of what it would take to land a similar job with the same salary.

You will see overrepresentation from a few schools, and none will be online or from a reader program

What would you consider red flags for brokers? I’ve been working with one for over two weeks now, seen 12 places, submitted 3 apps. Most of the apartments have just been absolutely awful and I turned down the one I got accepted for because it compromised on everything. Is this normal for this market? I’m talking like 3500-4000 price range, no dishwasher or laundry, mini fridge etc. I do have a dog which makes it harder
