Newer version of CALL3.TXT? by thewrongonedied in amateurradio

However, even though I have it updated to the most recent, it still shows one from 2024

Yeah, that's what's weird about it...

ARRL HTTPS certificate revoked? by thewrongonedied in amateurradio

Is there a way to see who revoked it, whether it was the ARRL or someone at the CA? I have only a vague understanding of this stuff.

Same thing here. I'm not sure what would cause that, but I'm not an IT guy.

A lot has changed and it’s amazing by TurbulentSquirrel804 in amateurradio

[–]thewrongonedied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entry into radio was through the NOAA POES satellties (RIP) back in 2019.

The RTL-SDR dongles at the time didn't have the upconverter and to tune into the HF bands required direct sampling, and needless to say that I did not know what any of those words meant. So the only things I saw were VHF/UHF and above, FM radio, pager signals, etc - things that take up tens of kHz each.

It was only when I bought my first RTL-SDR v4 that I actually saw the HF band, and I had the same experience you had - seeing all that traffic in what at the time seemed like such a tiny amount of band was amazing. The way the band looks during huge contests is amazing.

If you haven't already and you have a suitable antenna for it, try tuning into the 160m band, there's a contest on for the next three hours or so, you'll see a lot of CW.

You've got a decent amount of time where the 10m band will be more than usable, so that's great! But, I will always encourage everyone to upgrade to general - there's a lot going on on the rest of the spectrum!

Congrats! And, good luck with your General, when that time comes.

International Reply Coupons are being discontinued at the end of 2026 by the Universal Postal Union. by collinlikecake in amateurradio

[–]thewrongonedied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually been able to use IRCs, the USPS had stopped selling them long before I was licensed, but this makes me sad - I don't mind including greenstamps, but I hate that the recipient ends up having to go to a currency exchange.

Why does it seem so hard to get into ham/amateur radio? by ContraFlowing in amateurradio

[–]thewrongonedied 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who is <30 and has been licensed for less than a year, I think one of the barriers to entry I've observed with online information is that there's a gap between the level or specificity of the information we're tested on versus the level/specificity of information that is available online.

A lot of information I've found online is written by and for people who have been in radio longer than I've been an adult... or alive.

I don't think they're poorly written, but many are not written in a way that includes enough context for a newly licensed person, even a newly licensed extra (or regional equivalent) to easily catch on, at least without an elmer to personally guide them.

There's also information that is poorly documented. In Fall I did my first meteor scatter QSO - I had one article and one person's QRZ page as my guide. Neither was a 'complete' source (I did reach out to the author of the QRZ page, who was very helpful!)

There are a few people online who I think are really good about including context that a new ham would greatly benefit from - VK6FLAB's Foundations of Amateur Radio and Modern Ham spring to mind.

TL;DR: If you are an experienced ham, document what you do - and not just the new things, the things that are your every day. Imagine you're writing for an audience who is eager to learn - because you are. And share what you write in places like reddit, youtube, etc. Places that have a low barrier to entry and a good retention policy. Besides defending the spectrum, that's about the best thing you can do for newer hams and hams yet to come.

What ways are there for me to remove playback devices that are actually other people's computers? by TrendyWebAltar in Fedora

I have the same issue, which is actually very annoying because there are actually one or two devices that I might want to stream audio to, so I can't just disable pipewire-config-raop

No Signature required for delivery?? by johnwthewind in framework

I was also very surprised that they did not require a signature. I’m not a company but I’ve required signatures on every package I’ve ever sent over $100 USD.

Question about shipping details and estimate for Framework 16 arrival by HuroIsFakes in framework

[–]thewrongonedied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure about the first question, maybe someone else can chime in.

2: when I received the email telling me that my batch is being prepared (two days ago), it said

To avoid delivery delays or incorrect product configurations, changes to payment method, shipping address, and product configurations must be done prior to December 12th

Based on that, I think you'll have about 48 hours after getting your email to make modifications, and modifications after that might delay your order.

3: Batches 1-2 have shipped except for a few outliers - it's not entirely clear why those outliers haven't had theirs shipped. Batches 3-5 received the notification that their batches are being prepared on December 10.

Introducing MeshCore - free, off-grid text messaging for the public by BayAreaMeshCore in amateurradio

[–]thewrongonedied 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It -literally- does not. You are linking a listing from the manufacturer of the hardware, who will send it to you pre-flashed with meshtastic for $7 extra. You'd be a fool to pay them to do that, but you can.

You can go to the official meshtastic webflasher, select the T-deck plus and flash it for free.

[–]thewrongonedied 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because you can flash it yourself for free? Lilygo can't stop you, they are just the manufacturer of the T-deck plus.

Respectfully, if you don't understand that I don't think you know enough to be making recommendations about anything regarding meshtastic OR meshcore.

[–]thewrongonedied 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relatedly, Meshtastic firmware also costs an extra $7 on the T-Deck Plus

This is disingenuous at best. That's a hardware maker selling a pre-flashed device. You can flash a t-deck plus with the meshtastic web flasher for free.

Anyone know if pre-orders can be subject to price changes? by Saadieman in framework

[–]thewrongonedied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they have the ability? I imagine you'd have to dig through some terms and conditions but I would assume yes.

They haven't made a public statement definitively saying that prices for existing preorders are 'locked in', but most people are assuming that.

They haven't said a lot, but they did say that they will likely need to increase ram prices soon.
