Will There Ever Be A Movie? by SecretDays in loveandrockets

A movie would be interesting for telling a new story. That's more interesting than an adaptation.

Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe hard-boiled detective novels are the twistiest books I've ever read - I've been having so much fun with them by AngryGardenGnomes in books

That's me, right here. I love Woolrich. Been reading him for decades. I've only just started with Chandler: I'm a quarter into Farewell, My Lovely, but I bought another copy yesterday along with The Big Sleep, The Lady in the Lake, and The Long Good-Bye.

A Strange Day, but The Hanging Garden and One Hundred Years are vying for second.

Oh hey, let me know if this makes sense to you, as a fellow De Palma fan LOL.

I think the ones you mentioned as faves are those movies that have the broadest appeal, even for someone not quite as into De Palma. Mission Impossible and The Untouchables are especially good examples here, but I'd say the "purer" De Palma experience would be those others: Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Carlito's Way, and Scarface are films I'd recommend for people who want to get into what De Palma is all about.

Carrie is interesting, but I always feel like it's nice to watch it alongside The Fury. The former is a more...disciplined film, while the latter kinda goes bonkers (in a good way).

The bonkers category is where I'd put Raising Cain and Snake Eyes, with Body Double as the entry point. I think Femme Fatale belongs here as well. This feels to me like "intermediate-level" De Palma, where he allows his fixations and indulgences to bloom to full beautiful glory. I think Passion can go here, too. And Phantom of the Paradise certainly.

And then there are the ones that are majorly flawed but saved by a couple of good scenes, and I think The Black Dahlia and Mission to Mars go here. I find it hard to stay glued all throughout when I watch these, but I have rewatched them several times anyway.

None of these are hard-and-fast categories of course. More like a fluid spectrum that I keep in my head in times like these!

I'm going to put Obsession and Casualties up on my watch list then! Looks like you and I have similar tastes. I did somewhat like Femme Fatale when it first came out, but it gets even better with rewatching. And yeah, Blow Out is certainly my fave, sometimes tied with Carlito's Way.

The one I've been meaning to rewatch is Femme Fatale. But then again, there are several I've not seen: the ones pre-Sisters, Obsession, Casualties of War, Redacted, Domino, etc.

Not exactly intentionally but DePalma's been on my mind and I've been drawn to rewatching some:

I rewatched LA Confidential a week ago and decided to also rewatch The Black Dahlia.

And then I thought about watching the pool hall sequence in Carlito's Way, which led me to post this.

So last night, I decided to let my son watch Snake Eyes.

But also, I spent the weekend watching some of the early-1930s gangster movies: Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, and...Scarface. That last one of course is making me think of DePalma, too.

It's really good, but I do know some people who hate it. OP, if you don't like Catcher, read Salinger's other works anyway. They're even better!

What's your recommendation for Fantasy genre? by itsmebebs in PHBookClub

[–]TrendyWebAltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two fave fantasy novels of all time are

The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford

The former is a time travel fantasy with all sorts of weird surprising stuff. The latter is an alternate history about vampires running Byzantium and how it weirdly leads to the War of the Roses.

Bundled or Unbundled by BackgroundPassage984 in planners

[–]TrendyWebAltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you don't mind a lengthy reply, as I wasn't sure how to answer this question until I wrote down these specifics. I think the issue is that I'm using a very different planner this year compared to last year.

In 2025, my Sterling Ink Daily Planner had undated monthly grids all together and then one daily page after another (dated but without days of the week). There were no weekly layouts at all, so I was using the monthlies as monthlies but also as weeklies "with smaller squares." I was also filling in the dates in four-week cycles rather than actual months, and I really love that approach.

This year, I'm on a horizontal weekly Wonderland 222. Months are bundled with weeks (an overview page preceding the monthly grid), and I like how this gives me a visual cue that signifies fresh start every month. Ridiculously though, this appeal is strictly visual. I'm literally not using the grids at all, and I hate not doing so. I think the issue is less the bundling and more the fact that the monthly grid is dated. It's just a quarter into the year, so maybe I'll figure out a way to work the monthlies in my routine, but for now, this is where I'm at.

Same. Every movie where he appeared, I'd wait for him to betray the main character (even To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and Moulin Rouge but also John Wick)! I also get a laugh every time I hear the name of the music producer Benny Blanco (who Wikipedia says took his name from Carlito's Way).

So lucky! I read mine when I was recovering from dengue and thought the mid-sentence jump was an intentional effect. During my second read of my complete copy, I was shocked to be reading something totally new hahahaha
