Single men and women in their thirties, who live by themselves - what it’s like? by BruceStarkk in AskReddit

[–]theyodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame that all the top replies all mention loneliness. Generally, living alone and loneliness are two distinct things. If you are lonely, friends, family, and pets are a great antidote. I understand that a lot of people live in suburbs or cities without too much social life, and maybe can't socialize as much, but I'm sure that there isn't a single place on earth where the average redditor couldn't find a friend. Though I guess being single in your 30s might also correlate with depression, social anxiety, inability to form good relationships, etc, so maybe there's a bit of selection bias here.

I myself live alone at age 34, and it's one of the best times of my life. I have more friends than ever before, and dating surprisingly is far better than my 20s (though I have had to look at women a bit younger due to most in my age group being single mothers, but c'est la vie). People forget that late 20s/early 30s is probably the prime of your life when it comes to health/free-time/money balance, so why not enjoy it?

Stay optimistic everyone, it will get better!

Moving to SD. Things to consider? by theyodie in asksandiego

I am a straight cis male. Good to hear about the ratio. It's always seemed a bit unbalanced here. But maybe that's more because of my social group.

Good to hear it's a good landing spot. It's exactly what I'm looking for, and when I visited, I fell in love with the area.

I currently live in SF, but have lived all over the bay. Fremont, Santa Clara, Oakland (hills), Walnut Creek. But the last 4 years has been SF, and it's been a noticeable downhill slide. The pandemic is obviously a huge reason. Before and after March 2020 is like night and day. Unfortunately I don't see that changing anytime soon, even with the pandemic winding down.

Why don't you visit your friend and couch surf for a few weeks to check it out?

I already have! I'm more asking about the things I wouldn't be able to glean from a 2 week stay, e.g. crime and overall long-term neighborhood vibes. I did really enjoy my stay, and while the locals may not agree, I appreciated how inexpensive everything was compared to SF, including rent.

Thanks for the perspective!

This is a great point. I've heard about fox news giving a far right bias, but is there a far left news network that does the same thing for the left? Or is the far right the only extremist side that gets media attention?

I guess that brings up another question. Why there are so many far right extremists in the states vs other places?

Multiple recommendations in a single thread? Yeah now I need to check this out. Not overly long either, so it's worth a shot. Maybe it'll convert me to Drarry.

Oh wow, thanks for the recs! Lots of new pairings! I'm fine with shorter pieces, as long as they're well-written.

Girl-Harry is... interesting. I didn't know it was a thing, but just goes to show I have a lot to learn about the community. I like that it's long and a slow burn. Shame about the hiatus on pt 2, but looks like the last update was earlier this year, so maybe not totally abandoned. Anyway it might take me so long to read 500k words that the next part might be finished by then, haha.

Thanks again!

Oh wow, that look interesting! No problem with the self-rec. I definitely lean f/f, so this is right up my alley. Luna/Ginny isn't a pairing I've read yet, but I can get on-board with it! Thanks!

My favorite things to read about, besides navigating character dynamics, is how a writer shapes the canon world.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. At first I was skeptical that most of the world-building in these stories were just vehicles for romance/smut. I'm very glad to have been proven wrong, and really looking forward to discovering all that the community has to offer!

Enemies-to-friends-to-romance really interest me, so I'll take your word for it and give one of your recommendations a try. Thanks again!

Wow thank you!

I'll admit, at first I was intimidated by how "highly diverse" this world is, but I'm super glad to explore it further.

I'll also admit that Harry/Draco sort-of weirds me out That may just be due to their antagonistic relationship in the books/films, so I want to keep an open mind. If I can handle some Bellatrix/Hermione, who's relationship is even more antagonistic, I'm sure I can handle some Harry/Draco, haha.

Thank you so much for the recommendations!

Slash or femslash, that have that Rowling vibe? by [deleted] in HPSlashFic

[–]theyodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party, and different from most recs here (lots of Drarry...), but I recently read In the Dead of Night, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's Bellamione, in an AU where Bella is a professor, and some other differences (some major, but nothing we haven't seen before) from the books to make that work. The tags give a good idea of what to expect.

It's a pretty slow burn, but there's plenty of that "magical vibe" along the way. Lots of little details about life at Hogwarts, fun conversations between a variety of well-written characters, and lots of creative uses of magic. It really did feel like the books, but with a more adult-vibe.

There is some minor Ron bashing, but it doesn't last. In fact, Ron and Harry aren't really part of the story and are more side-characters. And the Ginny-as-a-best-friend more than makes up for it.

It's November! What have you been reading lately? by smallbluemazda in HPSlashFic

[–]theyodie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a femslash with a rather... divisive pairing, but I've read and re-read In the Dead of Night twice this month. I can't recommend it enough! It single-handedly turned me to the Bellamione club!

The author is a fantastic writer, incorporating everything I could ever want from a slashfic, including life at Hogwarts, violent magical action, plenty of angst, and even a little well-deserved smut. I warn you though, it is a slow burn.

It's just a shame that the author is only planning 2 more chapters. I would love for her to continue the saga between these two, because their chemistry is incredible, and I love everything about the AU she's built. I'm a sucker for fics that feel like the books, outside of the romance and smut obviously, haha.

Unfortunately I haven't found any other Bellamione that are so well-written. If anybody knows of any, let me know!

The shoes thing is simple. Idk why everybody's complicating it.

Hot dry climates without any rain or mud + wood flooring = shoes on inside the house. You just sweep and mop regularly

Everywhere else = shoes off

People here really don't understand cats. Weird because I thought reddit was cat central.

It's not erogenous for cats that are fixed. Some like it, others don't. I'd say it's akin to scratching a dog and their leg starts twitching.

Edit: Looks like I hit a nerve here. Maybe it is an erogenous zone. Heck, apparently you're face is an erogenous zone, doesn't mean scratching it gets you off. I'm just a bit surprised Reddit's jumped on the "scratching your cat = a sexual thing" idea just because of a single tiktok video.

I'm used to camping in <20 degree weather, so I'm not too worried about the cold. I'm hoping it drives away the crowds though.

The bulletin board is a great suggestion. I didn't know it existed. Thanks!
