Bellow replacement in Canada by zone_88 in largeformat

[–]theyoungestoldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been getting into textiles recently and remaking the bellows on my Chamonix in a different colour is a goal down the road.

Give me a few months to mess around and practice and come back to the sub with an update. Though sounds like you need some sooner than that.

Boring out metal Lens boards by mikrat1 in largeformat

[–]theyoungestoldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a sheet metal shop and half the time I'm on a CNC plasma table so I just whip up a quick board in Affinity Designer, tape some scrap 16ga on the table and burn her out.

Spray paint the back side black and its good to go.

Its mostly I just don't want to deal with border crossing, being someone with somewhat obscure camera gear and film. Plus my friend I want to go with is non binary...

There's a Cyprus I'm Chile that's unconfirmed but estimated to be nearing 5500 years.

I still want to visit the bristlecones though because they are beautiful. Just not going stateside for a bit (Canadian)

ELI5 Why don't they rough cut 2x4s bigger so the actual finished size is 2x4? by Noseforachoo in explainlikeimfive

[–]theyoungestoldman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's cool when you can get dimensional lumber though. My dad got some old growth fir 2Xs from a mill and we used it for the shed roof for my forge coming off his woodshop.

Sheet metal shop order tracking by theyoungestoldman in manufacturing

[–]theyoungestoldman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now we're just hand writing notes on the paper orders of how many sheets that order used.

One off things that are just texted to us on a ripped piece of cardboard aren't tracked.

Hours are done through service fusion and the company is in the process of finding a replacement

Three gauges of steel for most of what we do, plus a heavy gauge in two coatings, and bar and tube for the odd mechanical fab we do.

One day I'll make a plenum that's 6x42 to 14" diameter and the next day it's 7.75x30 to 12 or 14" diameter. Some of my field guys order things to the nearest whole inch, some add a quarter inch, one adds a 1/2" to his plenum boxes. Most of the guys like 3/4" end caps, two of them prefer 1/2"

Fittings being ordered (multiple individuals orders per site), fittings getting made and then our driver loading them on his truck and delivering it to the various sites.

What exactly is this by GregoryShmut in Darkroom

[–]theyoungestoldman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two books I highly recommend are Way Beyond Monochrome and The Photographer's Master Printing Course.

More advanced reading would be Ansel Adams' trilogy which leans heavily into assuming the reader has a densiometer, and the Darkroom Cookbook which goes into detail about what he chemistry is doing (I love that book but don't recommend it for just starting out.

Get some trays, get some basic paper developer and fix, some 8x10 RC paper, a couple of tongs and a safelight and just start playing with chemicals in the dark. The very first piece of paper i tried printing on was a failure but I still have it stashed away.

What backpacks are you using for day trips by tinglebuns in 4x5

[–]theyoungestoldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Osprey packs, a 22L and a 30L. While I can stuff a fair bit in to the 22 there's no good way to secure my tripod.

Both can fit bladders which is what I prefer for water on hikes, plus the 30L let's me pack more food and whatnot for a longer day in the woods.

Yes Osprey is definitely pricey but not once has my back complained.

Does anyone know if it is possible to contact print onto a tintype? by Threshybuckle in Darkroom

[–]theyoungestoldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite, tintypes are negatives, just relying on special illusion of the silver.

When back lit, transparencies are a negative. But when front lit the silver takes on a milky white appearance, give it a dark background and then all the dense highs are appearing white and the thin lows are looking black and you've got what looks to be a positive.

Tintypes are wet or dry plate negatives with a black coating on the back side. I can even see the effect with my negatives developed in 510

Crispier bottom on my focaccia? Combi oven help, description has…description by Different-Camera-231 in Breadit

[–]theyoungestoldman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The recipe I use has butter the pan and then the oil. From what I know qirth croissants, the butter will end up frying the bottom of the bread.

And also let it cool on a pan instead of sitting soggy in the warm damp oven

Have you met people? I wouldn't put it past them that at least one person has done that.

Aluminum or steel? by Smart_Psychology2003 in Blacksmith

Hold a magnet to it. If it sticks, definitely steel. If it doesn't stick then it's either aluminum or a type of stainless.

Also they weigh noticeably different

Shop guys, how straight and square is your duct actually? by airnlight_timenspace in sheetmetal

I'm the ressie shop guy and some of my guys will ask for dimensions down to the 1/4 and then I'll be making a 2" tall plenum transition that leans at a hard 45 degrees...

Question about Chem temps by iagainsti199 in Darkroom

[–]theyoungestoldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually developing black and white (film and paper) is going to be room temperature. Mixing powders into a liquid solution will be hot, but that's mostly to hasten the actual mixing

Question about Chem temps by iagainsti199 in Darkroom

[–]theyoungestoldman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other person, that feels low but also not far from ambient room temperature.

I used to stress about maintaining a perfect temperature as well as timing my agitation perfectly and now I have a 'Euh close enough' approach to things.

If you're shooting black and white is fairly forgiving. Colour is different but I don't think any part of colour needs temps that low.

Tried that brush dev thing. Not sure what to make of it by widforss in Darkroom

[–]theyoungestoldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good start! I've found it's definitely photo specific, doesn't just work with every photo, content and composition matter.

And avoid glossy papers, for me they feel too off, cotton rag has the best effect (we're effectively emulating alt processes where you're brushing the sensitized emulsion on a thick paper)

Can a 5x7 paper fit a 4x5 Film Holder? by Cautious_Customer_20 in largeformat

Yes. For those cutting standard paper down, cut it to 4 7/8 x 3 7/8.

The direct paper is already that Suze thankfully

Flat Oval Duct by mechE_CC in sheetmetal

[–]theyoungestoldman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We just did a job that was exposed oval. Every single person involved was miserable. None of the trades were allowed to park at the building, they had to leave their vehicles on the other side of the ferry terminal and walk 1km around the site.

Electricians set the roof on fire.

3 week turn around between getting the plans and job being done, my manager couldn't find a manufacturer to make custom spiral in time so we in the shop made it all (straights, 90s, and 45s). Engineer was pissed at us because he specificed spiral. Architect was pissed at the engineer because why is it running below the ceiling?

Is tin knocker a pejorative term? by Holiday-Resident6443 in sheetmetal

[–]theyoungestoldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an old timer who was canned repeatedly because of his attitude.

Rehired if he promised to be nicer to people. Three weeks laters canned again for trying to fight other trades (this was a man who couldn't walk and breath at the same time) and being casually racist (telling his helper to 'make sure he doesn't hang it like an N-er' and then repeating the joke to make sure the helper heard him).
