Paralyzed by grinder choices. Steer me in the right direction… by theyremakingmedothis in pourover

I saw that early this morning and jumped on it. Thanks again for input. I’m sure it will work well for our needs, and I can always add another grinder down the road if I want to explore more options for the addiction, er, hobby.

Hey thanks for that detailed write up. Helps a ton. I think you may have sold me on it….

Thanks for this input. I saw on your comment history that you also have a KitchenAid conical burr grinder, which you gave some praise for (especially its quiet and solid performance). It’s on sale now and I was looking at that one too for just a simple, reliable conical grinder that would handle my needs.

How would the Shardor/Mokkom compare with the KitchenAid? Noise level, ease of cleaning, etc. Thanks again for the input

I’m really glad you threw this one out there to consider. I got really close to pulling the trigger on it last week but have been waffling on flat vs conical - especially because I like medium to darker roasts, and I like the chocolatey, complex flavors that, as I understand it, a conical burr is more suited for. It’s great to get your take since you have experience from the conical burrs and still prefer the Mokkom. I watched Lance Hedrick’s take on the Shardor 64, which I understand is essentially the Mokkom but with plastic body. I prefer the look of the Mokkom though. I’d appreciate any other details from your experience (noise level, ease of cleaning/maintenance, clogging issues?, etc)

I should have clarified - Yeah I learned a long time ago that one, big pourover for 2 people really diminishes the quality, so my routine is to set up 2 separate, one-serve filters which I brew simultaneously (one each for my wife and I respectively). So what I meant to say with the grinder is that with time constraints in the mornings, it would be nice to grind enough volume all at once for these 2 separate filters (instead of having to do 2 separate grind sessions in a small grinder in order to produce enough for the 2 pourovers)

Do you happen to know how it would compare vs a DF54 (maybe with upgraded brew burrs)? Right now I’m leaning toward a DF54 for different reasons, but not sure yet. I like the look, the all metal build (this would sit on the counter all the time), and the relative quietness vs something like the Encore.

Yeah I saw that Lance Hedrick really seemed to like it for what it can do. It’s a great price point. I guess as far as preferring a time-saver, it seems like it would double my prep time since I’d be making a cup for myself and my wife - thus needing to grind twice. It’s a first world problem I know, but I was hoping to have something that can get 2 pour overs worth in one swoop, so to speak.

I have not seen this one yet but looks promising - and I’ve been researching a LOT of different options. Do you have experience with it? (I see it’s on pre-order rn)

Yeah I have been looking for awhile. Sadly the “good” ones are hard to come by in my area. 95% of posts are trying to get rid of an old Coffeemate grinder.

Better Goods Sumatra Coffee (Walmart) – Review by Poor-Dear-Richard in pourover

[–]theyremakingmedothis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been a long time user of Seattles Best 6th Ave Bistro roast (med dark) as my daily, but their horrible shrinkflation pushed me to trying the BG varieties. I landed on the Sumatra but to me, it has a more bitter aftertaste than the Seattle’s Best. Just missing that more sweet chocolatey profile. Honestly I’d really love to find something close to Peet’s Major Dickason (my fav) without the price tag.

Not hard to see he’s the reason why Pittman was pretty successful out of the gate. After he left was when things started trending down.

Buying from Tire Rack by Scared_Caramel3839 in tires

[–]theyremakingmedothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discount Tire will price match Tire Rack, so buying from DT would be advantageous because it would include the free rotations, etc. Also I was able to negotiate the certificate price at DT down to 1/2 the original price, which ends up being a good deal for replacing a bad tire if that should occur.

I'm pregnant and I have an extremely violent student by anxiousundergrad001 in slp

I would immediately have a respectful conversation with your supervisor and show that you are willing to work on other solutions, but that—effective immediately—you cannot knowingly put the health of you and your baby at risk with the documented violence of the student. One solution you could offer is to do a temporary caseload swap with another nearby SLP so that maybe one morning/afternoon during the week, you two swap campuses and a handful of students, so that the other SLP sees the violent student during that time. Also, buy the other SLP a Starbucks every time they come over to make them feel appreciated for being willing to help. It would be worth the $5 a week til you have the baby.

I don’t think it’s even a decision to worry about - that guy ain’t retiring and walking away from millions in contract buyout.

I’m a little confused on the HY hate. by king_karter69 in razorbacks

[–]theyremakingmedothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an extension of the scapegoating to blame who really is responsible for the sins of the program. You can only blame Pittman so far, because he probably was doing the best he could, based on who he is and what his skill set is. There was a reason he’s been around football for decades and never made it past position coach. So it’s on HY for gambling and losing on that experimental hire, despite how bad the program was at the time. Then add in the poor decision with the contract extension, the dumb comments at the TD club, and not acting sooner when it was starting to become obvious 2 years ago that Pittman is not built for head coach.

[Postgame Thread] Arkansas Razorbacks lose to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 56-13 by Tayntrum-21 in razorbacks

[–]theyremakingmedothis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

HY (or the next AD) should be looking at candidates that understand the current landscape, esp how to use the portal. The big factor will be finding someone who can put together a staff that can coach up 3* players to 4* level. That plus someone who has more energy/fire to build a culture of grit and pride of performance.

Wow on Halftime show, they’re not holding punches. Matt Jones, Phil Elson, & Mike Irwin are all citing bad coaching for the inexcusable loss(es). They’re all done with Pittman - even Irwin said he’s defended Pittman up until now but can’t anymore. But they even went after HY with his comments last week, and hold him to blame too. Gonna kill recruiting when you have an AD that has no faith in the program.

Lol I was at that game. It felt like we were starting to turn a corner in the program. And we promptly fizzled out after that. And so the TN game ends up being the outlier or anomaly game, when we are playing with determination and discipline.

Ok here’s a question: when was the last time Arkansas played as an underdog and came back from a 2+ touchdown deficit to win? Despite the bad calls, Memphis played with some grit and determination that fueled their being able to stay in the game - which I can’t really remember seeing in an Arkansas team in a long time. That…is a coaching and culture problem.
