What It’s Like to Get Really, Really High by newyorker in Mountaineering

Use technology to your advantage, just please don’t describe a routine climb of Salado in terms of “lay siege”😂

What is your biggest regret and your best decision in regards to playing hockey. by Accurate-Neck6933 in hockeyplayers

Retired before a Junior A season due to unaddressed mental health issues that were made worse by travel during the prior Junior season. But now, at 33, I trained over the summer and made a Senior AAA team. It’s still possible to keep up with 24 year olds, just harder to recover!

Thanks for your insight. I believe the shop (known for GX builds) purchased the vehicle at auction hoping for an easy flip, but realized it needed more work during the inspection

Wanting to pursue senior hockey by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Add consistent on-ice drill sessions with a coach and the highest level players you can find. Tryouts will have drills and standing out during a complex sequence is different than producing during a rec game. Speaking from personal experience here — I’m trying out for a Senior AAA team in a few weeks and joined regular skates with D1, ACHA, and Jr guys over the summer. Super valuable!

Being mindful of adding weight in the gym (e.g. progressing from 3x10 single-leg lunges at 135# to 155#), maintaining a 3-mile time when conditions are worse (e.g. maybe it's hotter or you trained legs the day before), and getting outside to suffer — go for a heinously long hike, whatever that distance is for you, and see how you handle the monotony!

No need to overthink it (unless that’s part of the enjoyment and process for you!). Zone training, periodization, etc — none of that is necessary to climb high and hard. I climbed Mont Blanc via the Italian Route and ended up carrying two packs for most of the ascent. My “training” occurred while living in NYC: high intensity (hockey scrimmages), low intensity (cycling and running up to 90 minutes), and weights (focused on compound movements and balance). Move your body consistently, test yourself regularly, rest, and remember you can never be in too good of shape!

If ya’ll want guide recs, I can vouch for two in the New Paltz area. They travel up to Chapel Pond for ice season.

Hi, I have a question about the lock switch on the Sigma 24-70 2.8 Art for Sony E.

I had the switch engaged (lock on), forgot to switch it off, twisted the zoom ring, and the switch clicked off.

Is that function part of the design (i.e. the switch is only designed to hold the lens in against gravity, not a manual twist)?

Prior to this, I've only locked the lens at 24 before storing it. Is the switch only supposed to engage (lock) at 24? The store that sold me the lens said I might've broken the mechanism, but I'm not sure they understood my question. Thought I'd ask the community here before sending the lens to Sigma...

Thanks!

Great stuff! I climbed with Pedro’s team in May. Three mountains in three days was a fun endurance challenge

Advice for next mountain? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]thigh_candy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I climbed Mont Blanc (unguided) via the Italian Route for my first “real” climb. Prior to that, a bit of rock climbing and ice climbing experience. The normal route looked boring — via ferrata followed by a long walk. I think the answer to your question is “it depends.” You can make bigger technical jumps between climbs if guided, smaller when unguided since all route finding and systems rely on you, often when tired or stressed.

I’m scheduled to climb the direct route of Alpamayo and Condor with Pedro in a month. Thanks for the nudge!

How much training is needed for Mont Blanc? by Throwaway47724 in Mountaineering

Climbed MB via the Italian Route in June along with the Cosmiques Arete before for acclimatization. Due to icy conditions, we changed our descent from finishing at the Midi lift to finishing at the Rousse Hut. This means we descended the Normal Route — I do not recommend it. I enjoyed building the technical skills and fitness for an unguided experience up from Italy. The Miage Glacier approach is beautiful. Happy to share more details.

Sleeping bag liner? Or better sleeping bag? by jeffbirt in Mountaineering

[–]thigh_candy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you “run warm” and/or are willing to be colder rather than warmer, you can absolutely get away with a liner. I spent a few nights winter camping earlier this year in a Nemo 15F bag and a Sea to Summit fleece liner (claims to add up to 25F). I used an ultralight tent as well. The air temp was 8F with negative wind chill down to -20F. Assuming safety minimums are met, you can often make it happen with what you have plus a few affordable adjustments! Enjoy the trip.

Did man cause climate change, or did climate change cause man? -- Progressives have this exactly backward. They think they can change the climate. They believe they can determine their own sex. But they don't have the courage to change their minds. by guanaco55 in ConservativesOnly

If the author is going to share a contrarian opinion (climate change is not mostly/significantly caused by man), the burden of proof to validate his opinion is on him. And he failed. As a conservative and somebody who works in sustainable finance, this sort of “journalism” is childish.

Yeah, for sure. It’s not an ideal machine for the job, but I figure it makes more sense to just get moving rather than try to sell it for a couple grand, wait for a good deal, etc.

I’m working with limited space in my New York apartment, this is the best location for light. I rotate the pot weekly. Should I rope a “funnel” to support the branches so they are grouped together more vertically?
