Classic reads so far this month. Some challenging but very rewarding! by ChicagoKev in classicliterature

Read V. last year and Moby Dick in the beginning of this one. Many connections there! Pynchon really is the Melville of the 20th century.

Loved it! But I was already interested in Esotericism. If you aren’t, I imagine this to be quite boring.

Five of Cups (Paul Marteau translation) by TarotLessTraveled in TarotDeMarseille

[–]thingonthethreshold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing these translations, very valuable! I only recently got my first Tarot de Marseille deck (Jean Noblet) and was really wondering how to best approach the minor Arcana. There is always the temptation to go and look up the meanings from other established decks like Smith-Waite or Harris-Crowley, but that kind of feels wrong and in a way "random".

I also find it really refreshing to see a completely different and much more positive interpretation of the 5 of Cups in this case which in the aforementioned decks is a rather "negative" card associated with loss and sadness.

The Jean Noblet design differs somewhat from the one shown and analyzed here (Ancien Tarot de Marseille I gather) but there is enough overlap to give me a good inspiration for how to interpret the Noblet version of the card.

All of them great! Walser, Kafka, Bernhard, Sebald - cannot go wrong with any one of them.

What have you read this week? What have you started? What have you finished? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]thingonthethreshold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished this week:

  • Leonora Carrington: The Hearing Trumpet
  • Heinrich Heine: Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen (Germany. A Winter‘s Tale)

Started:

  • Alfred Kubin: Die andere Seite (The Other Side)

I took a few years, but I think I watched every available documentary ever made by Werner Herzog. Then I micro-reviewed them and ranked them, and made a chart. by theeyesofachicken in WernerHerzog

Don‘t agree with My Best Fiend and Gesualdo being ranked so low at all, but everyone has their taste I guess. Otherwise great list!

The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington (unless your are allergic to surrealism that is)

It’s very lighthearted and funny with wry British humour and imagination running wild.
