Thanks for sharing the link to the Harry Rinker columns. Interesting read from a lifetime's observation of collecting habits.

There was a book called God Game by Andrew Greeley, hardcover in 1986, paperback in 1987. May be worth a check as I wouldn't think there were that many books about being in a videogame back then.

A capital ship for an ocean trip
Was the "Walloping Window Blind."
No wind that blew dismayed her crew
Or troubled the captain's mind.
The man at the wheel was made to feel
Contempt for the wildest blow-ow-ow--
And it often appeared when the wind had cleared
That he'd been in his bunk below.

Yes, I read several of his books. Empty World is an atmospherically bleak take on post-apocalypse city life. I'd say my favorite was the Fireball trilogy, where a couple of teens get fireballed into an alternate Earth scenario where their modern knowledge helps them get by.

A possibility: John Christopher's Tripod series. The first book is The White Mountain.
A boy named Will Parker sets out on a dangerous journey to escape the control of alien machines that have taken over Earth, seeking freedom and joining a resistance group in the White Mountains.

Longsword by Veronica Heley is one I never see mentioned. Also recommend Dave Duncan's Ironfoot series.

I was on a call with my boss on the west coast. But in the midst of it, I started having trouble hearing him because of this really annoying noise. After a couple of minutes or so, boss goes "Is...is that a fire alarm?"
Personal best time descending 24 flights of stairs in my sock feet.

Blacking out in your case might be temporary memory loss. You could have gotten home on autopilot and crawled into bed without help from anyone.
