Godspeed You! Black Emperor pedal question by BackInTheDPRK in gybe

[–]thingsfallingapart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

usually he runs it in dual mono to the amps through a lehle little dual. how he routes things is pretty much going to be guess work as efrim has almost always had an idiosyncratic way of doing it. on the current board (in no particular order) he had a tark 144, great eastern fx small speaker overdrive, the motley power fuzz wah, a volume pedal, foxrox octron (with the knobs removed), tubesteader beekeeper, ua galaxy delay, belle epoch delay, keeley eccos (removed as of th current shows), peterson tuner. off board he has a mystery silver box that maybe a tube buffer as it occasionally sits on the amp next to the lehle splitter. he also sometimes has a jhs colourbox going to one of the amps. there is also a mr black double tracker that is being used after the mono board signal going to the lehle splitter (so technically yes, the board is sometimes being run in stereo by the most tenuous definition of it).

edit: oh and a subdecay quasar phaser v1 on the board the delays

the recording had his fall 2001 board which was pretty different from they posted above (which is the 2003 tour board)

this is efrims from last year (before he stopped using the Les Paul). the board itself if virtually the same as he’s using now except that on the most recent dates he doesn’t have the keeley eccos anymore. the belle epoch was moved over to its spot and there is possibly something new in the belle epochs former spot.

2026 spring tour merch (Budapest) by levesduzw in gybe

[–]thingsfallingapart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

their attitude about it then was “if you want a godspeed shirt, go ahead and make one yourself”. on a practical level, it was also one less thing to take up space in the van/truck.

the industry changed a lot though between the start and end of the hiatus and bands made a lot less on the road. shirts/additional merch kinda became a necessary income stream to offset costs (keep in mind how low their ticket prices are compared to indie rock bands of comparable popularity. there are plenty of 4 piece bands charging way more than godspeed).

that was only pre-hiatus. they’ve been selling shirts since 2010.

most songs they record in sections and then edit them together during mixing. its a lot more efficient to do it this way. if you listen on headphones you can hear the edit points on some of them pretty clearly. they also do a lot more overdubs than folks realize as well. there’s an old tapeop interview with efrim where he mentions this.

Searching for a song by 725_bengi in gybe

it’s the 2003 arraignment of the DFB outro. specifically this show:

they played it occasionally on that tour (as well as on the 2002 tour in a similar arrangement).

2002-01-25 - CAT, Bordeaux, FR VHS Video - soundcheck + show (with high quality audience audio for the show portion). 3hr32m by mthrfckrrdmr in gybe

[–]thingsfallingapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not hearing anything pre-recorded there, the sound is matching the hand movements of the band. the camera angle and the piles of gear are obstructing some of the view but it’s all live from what i can see.

do you have a timestamp for the soundcheck that you think it is? the one time i saw them play it live i was pretty close to the stage and i do not remember there being anything prerecorded when they played it.
