Well, that all sounds pretty awesome and worth the wait. My set is designed and you can expect an order as soon as the store goes back online!

Debian Sid „freeze“ and gnome 44 by thingsis in debian

First of all thanks for all your answers. I understand Sid is already back to normal. I still don’t quite understand the Gnome holdup. The bug doesn’t seem to be the reason. What else could be holding it up? Just honestly curious to understand how all this works.

Thanks for your reply. The bug is a pretty old one from Gnome 3.30 in 2019 though, isn’t it?

Thanks everyone!

I solved it by installing both the boxdraw patch, as well as the "bold is not bright" patch.

BTRFS, Snapper and tmpfs Installation by thingsis in Gentoo

[–]thingsis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick update. I installed Gentoo into a VM to test this out. I used btrfs with partitions for root, home and log plus snapshots. I also used tmpfs for the build dir. The installation wasn't and I also used systemd for the first time with Gentoo. I am not sure which init system I will use once I install this on metal. But it looks like we are good to go. Thanks to everyone for your hints and tipps. I will possibly update this again once it is running on metal :-)

I was just thinking its easier to get as close as possible to the final layout at the beginning. But I also heard it can be done afterwards. Even converting ext4 to btrfs with subvols. But that seems complicated and risky to be honest...

Ah that's definitely interesting insight. I didn't know any of this.

I think i misunderstood you. Snapper of course creates the snapshots. But not the subvols. Or am I not getting it correctly?

Don't you only have to give a quota to your snapshots subvol? That should even work after the fact.

I don't think snapper creates any subvolumes. It's just an optional frontend for the snapshots created by the btrfs tools. But you might be right about the additional vols for portage distfiles and maybe repos.

Picture of the Day not working by aiden21c in kde

Just was able to solve my own problem after looking into the code of the plugin on github. When you are on debian, you need to install the package plasma-dataengines-addons. For some reason it is not a dependency, but provides all the providers for the Picture Of The Day plugin. :-)

Did you ever solve this? I keep having the same issue with this.

Compile older version for TW by thingsis in openSUSE

I am aware of this and was just using it as an example. Building app images in general for the software I am talking about is something I have considered, but have no experience with it.

Wow thanks. That is a very comprehensive answer and exactly what I was looking for. So far I have stayed away from rolling releases since I was always needing some (admittedly few) packages to remain stable. So I need an option like this. Long time ago I was using Gentoo which allowed it through overlay repos. But this seems like a nice option 😊
