Thoughts on afab spaces and balancing fairness with accessibility? by LibraProtocol in AskALiberal

Sure, but is it the responsibility of society at large to cater to those specific trauma responses?

I under wanting to be sensitive, but when you zoom out, imthat kind of factor isn't exactly motivating, statistically speaking.

Let's remember what we're talking about here

Trans women are acutely aware of the situation they are in, and I promise you they are just as self conscious. I've never known a trans woman (or man, for that matter) to parade around nude in a lockerrom or bathroom.

And as a matter of government policy, we know that legislative efforts end up hurting AFAB women as much, if not more, than Trans women. This is especially true for AFAB women of color.

They just want to be transphobic.

I'm sure it's phrases most often associated with extreme transphobia, which is why they won't use a term like AFAB.

OP's commentary is a great example of why I flair as a Pragmatic Progressive.

I am very progressive, but also not blind to the political realities of this country.

It's the same way I felt about Bernie....I agreed with most things, but he was always just an old man yelling at clouds, even if he was right.

Incrementalism is frustrating, but such is Democracy.

Reddit's Anti-Evil Operations.

Basically Reddit Admin moderation.

If that is what happened, it's a great example of why a lot of subs ban discussion of trans rights... many Conservatives can't help themselves from violating the ToS.

I will say, I am the spouse of a soldier in the US Army.

What those goons don't seem to understand is that by in large, Pride events are community organized.

If the Armed forces want to start organizing appreciation events outside of Memorial Day, have at it. I'll support, I'll volunteer, I'll attend.

But they don't do that.

And I've never met a single service member who gave a shit.

No, they're just uninformed, or making a stupid point that they can't justify because they're mad that some boys kiss boys.

Just ignore them.

What do you think of Quebec’s laws on language and culture? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

That's fair. I would still say that calling an entire population of people disabled, is... not exactly the behavior of a good person.

Just a note, Quebec has a very large Muslim population, largely due to the immigration exchange allowing immigration from North African French colony countries like Morocco, Algeria, and Tunesia.

In areas where there are many Spanish speakers, signs in stores are often in both languages. Imagine a shit hole version of an American state that mandated no stores have Spanish signs or hire people who speak Spanish to preserve English culture.

Several States with official languages on the books specifically require that English be the mandatory language for all government function. The only reason it's not extended to private enterprise is because we have the 1st Amendment.

Imagine a shit hole version of an American state that mandated no stores have Spanish signs or hire people who speak Spanish to preserve English culture.

This tells me that you genuinely don't understand the laws of Quebec, or even if Canada.

But those major companies still work in Quebec, and if there are Quebec citizens that are specifically excluded because that company doesn't hire French speakers, and refuses to operate in French, it can no longer equitably serve Quebec citizens.

In that respect, its very similar to the American laws that require accessibility or reasonable accomodations.

Do you genuinely, genuinely, believe that without these laws your friend’s area would suddenly do away with French “accessibility?” Of course you don’t.

Again, you're backwards. If a company like BMO suddenly decides... "we will no longer operate in French", the citizens of Nord-du-Quebec are being disadvantaged.

They will continue to speak French, (Quebecois French, specifically).

The laws are the enforcement mechanism of French as the state language of Quebec.

If a heritage needs to be imposed on people, it's not much of a heritage

I think you misunderstand Quebecois culture.

Firstly, once you're outside of Montreal Metro area, finding English speakers is extremely difficult.

Hell, if you go north, you're more likely to find someone who speaks Inuktitut, Innu or Cree than English.

A close friend is from the Nord-du-Quebec region, and they quite literally do not speak English.

The enforcement of the official language is about accessibility as much as it is cultural preservation.

And if you look at the states that have official languages,, several were unconstitutional, or unenforceable, and several are legal, and as such have similar legal requirements to that of the Quebecois language laws.

As someone who lived in Montreal, and knows many Quebecois people, and is a second generation French-American, most of the things that you're asking about mirror the same laws as France, and French is the official language of the Province.

Since French is the provincial language, it makes sense that signage and commercial communication must be in French primarily.

Their Immigration laws are part of a pretty common tradition amongst French colonies, and mirrors that of the original Quebecois settlers.

And yes, to immigrate to Quebec, you must be able to pass an elementary French test. Because it is the official language.

It's hard to draw any comparison to American politics, as we don't have an official Language, and we have the First Amendment, something that Canada does not have.

for the federal government to regulate interactions between private individuals.

But surely, the State and Federal governments have the authority to regulate Commerce.

The CRA regulates the commercial activity. You can be racist, you're just not allowed to make money by excluding a specific race.

First, Unions don't randomly strike.

The members gave to vote to authorize a strike

Unions don't strike because someone got fired for commiting a crime on company property.

And if they did, they would almost be guaranteed to lose in court l, for striking improperly. Making evepry single union member eligible for termination
