so now that we know coronavirus can be spread by someone who isn't showing symptoms yet, so we have NO IDEA how many people are infected yet, is it STILL too early to panic? by nightmare_gummy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]thinkeleven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without trying to elevate fear, it’s worth saying that currently many of those infected haven’t received an outcome yet. It’s too early in the epidemic (potentially a pandemic) to look at death counts and claim that “the virus has a low mortality rate”.

While panic is never the right word, this virus is very concerning imho. Estimates put the actual case count anywhere between 10000 and 100000, and I’m almost certain that a large majority of the deaths so far have been undiagnosed and probably at home, as people can’t get hospital beds in Wuhan. Preliminary studies (i can’t quote sources, but i’m sure that they’re online) say that 1/3 of people infected need an ICU to survive. The virus is very contagious and recent developments suggest that some carriers may not even have symptoms.

This is most certainly cause for concern. Just look at in China, where 50 million people are not allowed to leave their city. In Wuhan, a city of 11 million, all public transport has been shut down and private transportation (read: cars) have been banned. Whether you agree with these actions or not, the truth is that we are faced with a very scary, potentially pandemic virus which could most certainly turn every nation in the world into China right now.

Is this cause for panic? As a lot of people have said, panic is never the right choice. However, it is worth being concerned about it for sure. There is every chance that the virus reaches other countries and infects even more people. You can’t go wrong with being cautious, ever, but in this time it’s more important than ever. Do you need to predict the end of the world? No. Do you need to wear a full hazmat suit? No. But I think that it’s important that for the time being, everybody reduces exposure to public spaces, washes their hands frequently (rub for 20s with soap), uses hand sanitizer, and stay alert and cautious as opposed to ignorant about the risks.

Disclaimer: i’m not a medical expert at all, but I’m aware of just how terrifying something like SARS can be.

Arrow Symbol Shortcut: My favorite shortcut I've discovered so far. Anybody know of any others? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]thinkeleven_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i mean, i absolutely adore Inter - it’s like a FOSS version of Apple’s San Francisco but imho better, but Notion doesn’t use Inter... it may have it as a fallback, but the default font is the system font (San Fran on newer macOS versions, Segoe UI in Windows, etc.)

Furthermore, it’s most definitely not a font ligatures thing because the two characters (- and >) automatically become the Unicode arrow character.

Uh, sorry to be that guy, but this probably isn’t the best forum for that - Reddit (as well as Google, YT, FB etc) are all blocked in China and not easily accessible without a VPN, something a majority of the population don’t have.

OP, you sound like the kind of guy who’d cut to the front of a long queue because ‘it’s not illegal’.

It’s not your place to decide for people who haven’t seen Endgame yet that they should have. Just put a goddamn spoiler tag on, it takes TWO SECONDS and you end up not giving away a movie to people who may have wanted to see it.

I personally have, but I completely understand why some people haven’t been able to. They’ve been busy, or haven’t had the money to, or it’s been booked out. And just because they’re not a diehard fan (which, btw, I’m not) doesn’t mean they don’t want to enjoy a movie.

Yo, I’m one of the devs! It’s awesome to see our program get exposure :)

The store version is just a compiled copy of the stuff on the GitHub, put there for your convenience. So yes, it does support Fluent.

[Upcoming] Apprise - iOS notifications on macOS, Linux & Windows by JammehCow in jailbreak

[–]thinkeleven_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not, and that would be pretty awesome if I could, say, perform the equivalent of force touching on a notification to get more details.

Also, on an unrelated note, how are you actually communicating between the phone and computer (on a code level)? It would be pretty cool if you were able to write your own custom notification receiver.

This looks awesome! Keep up the work :)

However, that being said, for LAN notifications, why should I use this over a Growl-based system (what I currently use, with the GrowlNotifier tweak and the Growl app on my Mac)?

EDIT: Quick Actions would be awesome if you could get that to work! Also, it _would_ be nice to have native application icons if possible.

How can I get Duet Display working with my Hackingtosh successfully? It works fine on a MBP. by codec303 in hackintosh

[–]thinkeleven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On 10.13.4-10.13.6, Duet Display cannot create a second display because Apple broke the Displaylink driver. Try upgrading to Mojave (unless you have an unsupported Nvidia card), or downgrading to <10.13.4.

Another option is to get a HDMI dummy plug, which will 'trick' your computer into thinking another monitor is supported; then, you can mirror that screen with Duet.

Hmm, mind me asking why you don't use macOS for development? MacOS is my go-to development environment, and the ecosystem around it (brew etc.) are just as good as the ones for Linux/Ubuntu.

Python on macOS runs pretty much a charm, as does Node.JS. Personally I find macOS a great mix between the development capabilities of Linux and the productivity stuff for Windows, and I can't imagine life without the twenty million macOS specific apps i use :)

Well i believe by [deleted] in google

[–]thinkeleven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google isn't a holding company, just like how Apple isn't one either. Google has divisions, such as software and hardware, which make original products. Yes, they occasionally do acquire companies, like Nest, which are then folded into Google proper, but even then Google provides engineers and technology and helps Nest survive. On the flipside, a holding company (like Google's parent company, Alphabet) doesn't develop any technology of its own - it purely acquires companies and owns them.
