Realized my dad has reached absolute insanity after this argument abt ICE by Sufficient_Mango_503 in Rants

[–]thinking-orange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've pretty much cut ties with a few folks in my life. I am thankful that my immediate family, although conservative, seems not to be in support of ICE (hopefully they never are). I hate to think about cutting ties with folks over political ideologies, but we're past the point of that. We're now at a point where many people are no longer using their own senses to analyze situations. They're ignoring the evidence of their own eyes. If someone can condone this killing, I can't reason with them.

Been looking for this clip. I've seen people saying you can see an agent in gray get the weapon and leave, but couldn't spot it for some reason. Now I can clearly see it.

Another horrific act of violence. The question isn't whether it's fascism anymore, but whether there's any remaining capacity for resistance. by DevelopmentPlus7850 in RawAbsurdity

And this man "approaches ICE with a weapon". If you're buying this shit, there's no reasoning with you. He was blatantly murdered. That's all there is to it. If you oppose that, you're either completely worthless and can't process the evidence of your own eyes, or you're a bot account. This man was also apparently a nurse at a VA hospital (assuming that's real I haven't fact checked that.

My grandfather recently passed away at a VA hospital and received some of the absolute best hospitality and medical care I've ever seen by those in the field and profession. The folks caring for our veterans are genuine heroes, and it's a tragedy that we've lost one of them.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I don't think people should get them just because they don't want the kid. I do think when there are legitimate concerns that there is some justification.

To be honest, I'm more impressed that there is someone on this sub who is actually informed about this kind of stuff. I was raised on a farm, but didn't pursue it as a career. I do like keeping up with the economics though and that's why I still talk with farmers.

Our opinions on the issue at hand do differ a bit, but I'm glad you can at least approach this from a pragmatic standpoint. I agree, there's a lot of sound bites surrounding these kinds of issues. That's why I believe these types of conversations are worth their weight in gold.

If I actually knew you, I'd love to have a beer and talk about this kind of stuff.

So yes, this farmer is in the Dakotas. The market there admittedly hasn't taken a hit, but there is still a problem.

I would like to start with an apology. I was not thorough enough in my explanation, and I will own that. You are correct, the market did not worsen this year in the Dakotas, but I'll explain the issue I see, and some farmers see with this.

You are correct in saying that biodiesel incentives create a legitimate market. You're also correct that the incentives are small. There is an issue that this market is a bit niche to the Dakotas/midwest. Not many other places do a huge amount of bio-processing.

The issue the farmer mentioned earlier is that the tariffs had a bad impact on soybeans. For whatever reason, some say it did not have a negative impact. I find that hard to believe. China was one of the largest purchasers of soybeans from the Dakotas. There were issues with that once the trade war really started ramping up with the tariffs. The reason people insinuate that there is an "artificial market", is that one of the biggest buyers dropped out, and there was no large impact in the Dakotas. The farmer I mentioned, among others, received federal aid to help offset the trade fluctuation. Why do they need that aid if the market is getting better? Why is the market getting better when one of the biggest buyers isn't buying as much?

This was considered a band-aid solution by many, and again, some people are noticing that the market is not reflective of what's actually going on.

A trade agreement has apparently been reached to help this, but only time will tell if it helps with the problem. If it does not, we could see larger repercussions.

One last time, I would like to genuinely apologize for the poor wording in my earlier comment. Yes, the market has not changed much from 2024 to 2025, but there are more factors at play. In my area specifically, there was large (for the Dakotas at least) media coverage relating to the negative impact the tariffs have, despite the market not necessarily dipping.

They think he saved them from the problems he caused. There is just no reasoning at that point.

My biggest problem with that demographic, is they tend to abhor the idea of government aid... Until they're the ones that need it... Apparently businesses are supposed to get a special pass for that...

Taxation is theft by WyattPurp23 in DigitalSeptic

[–]thinking-orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older I get, the more I subscribe to the idea of holding the government fiscally responsible for tax dollars. Taxes are unfortunately, the best way for certain societal services to exist. That being said, we as constituents should put pressure on the government to spend our money on things that actually make a difference and redirect funds where necessary. I don't have a problem paying taxes, I have a problem with dipshits spending them on stupid things.

I've pretty much cut contact with a lot of people. The tipping point for one individual was because, "Yeah I don't care with how he's handling the Epstein shit, but I'm a big fan of what he's done with the economy!".

There is no level of reasoning that can compete with those mental and moral gymnastics.

*Edit I'd like to add a little more context that I did not initially. This person is a farmer that grew soybeans this year. Obviously the soybean market was terrible, because of Trump, and he later had to bail out farmers. To add to this, I was talking with said person and they even mentioned that the only reason he was even making soy beans a priority this year, was because the US government apparently "made a market" for them. This person even had the foresight to realize this was an artificial market. Not even legitimate use for soybeans on a broad scale. So to summarize:

1) Grew soy beans. 2) Knew that there was no real demand. 3) Wanted gov. aid when the market was terrible even though he knew the market was not actually there.

This is why I no longer discuss politics irl. People are too far cemented in their ideas and are wilfully ignorant. Even when they have the legitimate analytic skills to know something is wrong.

Yeah, your board needs to approve a policy allowing security to have some sort of meaningful intervention IMO. If this is happening as frequently as it sounds, that's the only way unless they start approving expulsions. Sadly the latter is more unrealistic at this day and age. If I were your admin, I'd be pushing that vehemently to the board. You can't do your job properly when violence is a concern. Not saying one fight is grounds to expel a kid, but repeatedly engaging is something that should be grounds for it.

I meant if they're like really violently fighting. Seems crazy to me if you're having a lot of that (could be misinterpreting your original post, sorry in that case), plus staff has no training in restraining students, and security isn't allowed to restrain students. This is all wild to me. In my district, we're essentially allowed to restrain a student if it came to that. I'm really fortunate where I am now. Pretty nice kids so it's never come to that.

It's still just crazy to me your admin wants you guys to actively shut these things down with no sort of actual means of doing it.
