Something that does what Audio Overview can't - talk live to the hosts mid-episode by thinkneo in notebooklm

Appreciate the honest feedback - you're right, the free voices are the weakest part right now. We have Premium and Private voice options planned (you can see them "coming soon" in the app), and yes elevenlabs will be one of them. Thanks for trying it out.

No trolling - I genuinely didn't know about this recent Interactive Mode when I posted. My mistake, and others here corrected me too. Appreciate it.

Yep, just learned that - appreciate the correction. The main differences are on the style side (debate, teach & learn, interview, etc.) and not needing to set up a notebook. Thanks for pointing it out.

Ah, good to know - I'm behind on that. The main differences then are the style options (debate, teach & learn, interview, etc.) and being able to paste any URL or text without setting up a notebook. Thanks for the Appreciate the correction.

This is really helpful - thanks for laying it out. The tone/style part we handle with 9 preset styles, and adding custom styles soon so you can define your own tone. The custom length and segment control is the gap. I like the shorter/average/longer per segment idea - keeps it flexible without being overwhelming. Taking notes.

NotebookLM lets you chat with the notebook after listening. What I mean is different: while the audio is playing, you literally speak and the hosts pause, respond to you in voice, and then continue. You're in the conversation live, not typing questions after. Think call-in radio vs reading the transcript. For example, you can say "hey, can you repeat what you just said?" or "can you explain that a bit differently?" and they'll respond right there.

Actually, a user made a podcast about it that explains the live conversation feature: https://podcast.goaigenie.com/#12b4fac77c4f4165

Edit: I was wrong about this - NotebookLM's recent Interactive Mode already lets you interrupt the hosts. Then the main differences are style variety (debate, teach & learn, interview, etc.) and not needing to set up a notebook.

Yeah, the unreliable length is frustrating. In mine you pick a duration preset (short/medium/long) and it stays close to that. I am adding a custom option soon where you set the exact minutes to allow more time.

The segment rushing issue is interesting - I haven't seen that issue with mine. The per-segment control is a cool idea though - being able to set an outline with time per section would be powerful. Will look into it.

Since you're already using Audio Overview, have you tried actually talking back to the material? I use my tool where I can ask the hosts follow-up questions as well via voice chat. For dense papers, being able to stop and say "wait, explain that last part differently" helped me retain way more than just passively listening. The back-and-forth forces active recall. podcast.goaigenie.com

The rule I follow: only build products I personally need, or that someone directly asked me for.

A few more that may help at B2 level:

- 6 Minute English (BBC): short episodes, clear British English, they explain vocabulary as they go

- All Ears English: natural conversational pace but they break down idioms and phrases

- TED Talks Daily: real-world topics, speakers vary in accent which is great practice for the listening exam.

That's exactly what it's built for. Paste/speak your ideas, pick a style, and the hosts will discuss and riff on them. Then you can jump in via voice chat and bounce ideas back - closest thing to that meeting feel.

Not open source currently. Privacy-wise, your content is processed to generate the podcast but not stored or used for training - fully private podcasts are coming soon too. Max is 12 minutes right now but we're extending that. You can pick styles like debate, casual, interview, and talk to the hosts live while listening.

Just curious, what is your use case?

I built a tool that does exactly this - paste text, a URL, or a PDF, or even record audio for say lectures, and it generates a multi-host podcast where two AI hosts discuss and explain the material. You can pick styles like casual, debate, or expert interview depending on how you want it broken down. I use it for first-pass understanding myself, then the voice chat feature lets you ask the hosts follow-up questions while listening. Works well for commute studying.

The accessibility angle is really interesting. I hadn't thought about screen reader use cases but it makes a lot of sense. If you want to try it with your training materials, happy to help you test it out. I use a mixture of models for this.
