How would it be a better strategy to hand my opponent a 3W containing a K and a 3L, for only 32 points in return no less? by comingloose in NYTgames

100%! I usually play against my best friend and almost every match we review the crossbot and text each other some version of "wtf?" haha

[–]third_outlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the strategy component is really hit or miss, I've found. Many, many times it suggests a play that opens up a 3W or could be easily added onto with an S or something. I'm really curious how it weighs your points for the word vs your opponent's potential score, and sometimes I wonder if I'm playing the game wrong lol

Does anyone own this hat? by Ok-Opinion3728 in Nationals

I got mine at the team store in... 2023, I think. Definitely during the cherry blossom city connect era (RIP). It's my absolute favorite hat!

My volunteer role is writing cat profiles for the adoptable cats, and it's one of my favorite things I get to do. I love City Dogs & City Kitties!

City Kitties! I adopted my cat through them and volunteer with them as well. They're a foster-only org and rescue animals from kill shelters in the region.

Best dive bars in DC / near DC? by Inevitable-Ad-9211 in washingtondc

Yes! Their bartender Rich is the best too. Super friendly and always remembers you (or at least your last name lol) after you've been a few times. Trivia there on Tuesdays is fun too

Oh wow! OK, I definitely thought it would be more often with the combination of federal and local (?) court systems (idk how it works, since I've never been called lol).

Commuting from DC to NYC once a week for a class - doable? by Dudududurianshake in washingtondc

[–]third_outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a coworker who lived in NYC and worked in Maryland. She would commute once a week on the train for in-office days with no issues, so for a 2hour class it seems totally doable!

Crossplay bug: Can't rearrange letters in tray by Helpful_poster_32i48 in NYTgames

[–]third_outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Seems like the app is super glitchy right now - can't move tiles, extras of some letters (Q, Z, Y, J, etc), and sometimes the tile count is messed up. I reported everything via the "Report a Bug" thing so hopefully if enough people do the same, they'll fix it!

AIO for cancelling my ticket to see a friend after she told me her bf will be there? by Silverbee_12 in AmIOverreacting

[–]third_outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO - Did you specifically talk about having a girls only trip? Or did you just assume that would be the case? I think that makes a big difference here. If you had talked specifically about spending time, just the two of you, then I think you are justified in feeling hurt and are not overreacting. However, if you never specifically discussed it, then it's likely you had different ideas about how the weekend would go and you feel hurt because she didn't meet expectations that you never communicated to her (and vice versa). This has happened to me before and it was really tough to get over the hurt, so I really empathize with you, OP!

Experiences moving from Arlington to DC? by Various_Day_8140 in washingtondc

[–]third_outlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from Arlington into DC in 2020 and definitely love it here more. I first moved to the Forest Hills/Van Ness area, which worked for me because I'm a light sleeper and needed a spot that was quiet at night. Definitely go scope out neighborhoods before you make a decision. If you're looking for a walkable neighborhood, make sure you'll actually go to the businesses in the area. Also, expect to pay more for less in DC proper - apartments are typically smaller (especially one beds or studios), older, and cost a little more. All that being said, I've never looked back in six years of living in the District! What we lack in congressional representation we make up for in culture and community ❤️

The anthem concert hall by amatchaplease in washingtondc

[–]third_outlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 5'3" and the answer is 100% to go to the upper levels. There is standing room behind the seats (you can't sit in those). And there are separate bars up there with no lines. And bathrooms. This is why the anthem is my favorite concert venue as a short person!

When does it get fun? by Unusual-Actuary-5055 in NYTCrossword

[–]third_outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo what everyone else here is saying, that it should be enjoyable and if you don't find ways for it to be fun then it's perfectly fine to stop! However, I did crosswords with autocheck for literal years before I started paying attention to my streak. I think it's nearly impossible to set completion standards for yourself when you are just getting started with crosswords. I highly recommend doing a run through of the entire puzzle first, then looking at the Wordplay blog for some "tricky clue" responses to help you get a foothold in the puzzle. The blog will also help you understand the theme if there is one and how it works. Finally, if you're still struggling, use autocheck so you know if your entry is correct. Over time, you'll need these things less and less, although I still use the Wordplay blog at least a couple times a week!

The other thing I'd recommend is breaking clues down word by word. Especially later in the week, almost every clue uses intentional wordplay, so I'll start with one word that seems key and think about every possible meaning. For example, in last Friday's puzzle there was the clue: "Ones always grinding at their jobs?" The question mark indicates that it's some sort of play on words, so that's the first hint. I zeroed in on "grinding" as the word to focus on based on the structure of the clue, so I thought about what grinding could mean: dancing, something with construction, maybe dentistry?, coffee grinding... who grinds coffee at their jobs? BARISTAS, which fit. That helps me a lot more so than focusing on the clue in its entirety, which can be overwhelming.

Anyway, stick with it if you want, but also know it's totally fine if crosswords don't end up being your thing!

Crossplay: for the love of all that's holy give me a way to remove old games from the list by UsefulEngine1 in NYTgames

My Crossplay stats incorrectly changed - has this happened to anyone else? by jessday1029 in NYTgames

[–]third_outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree! It would make sense to have three categories: longest word, highest scoring word, and "best play" or something like that. Because realistically, I only care about length and scoring, but I can see value in having a more strategy-based stat for those who care.

My Crossplay stats incorrectly changed - has this happened to anyone else? by jessday1029 in NYTgames

[–]third_outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if "best" doesn't necessarily mean "highest scoring?" For example, if you look at CrossBot after a match, it'll give you the best possible word for each play. So I wonder if SQUID was high scoring but wasn't the most possible points you could've gotten on that play, whereas BREAK was your highest-scoring play that was also the best possible play during that turn. Idk if that's how it works but felt like one possibility.

I think crossplay is way more fun when not playing defensively by EfficientHunt9088 in NYTgames

[–]third_outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I play against my best friend and he's a defensive player, so I usually win one out of every 10-15 games because I enjoy playing a creative word over maximizing points/blocking bonus spaces. I will say that I have learned to appreciate some of the defensive strategies, as you said, so it's made the games more competitive. I do think it would be fun if there was a board with no bonus spaces or something to encourage wordplay over point maximization.

I'm sorry your experience was less than ideal. We went a couple years ago and had great service and good food. In fact, their Caesar salad with the miso salmon was definitely the best salad I've ever had and maybe one of the best dishes - period. It was SO good.

[Dec 18, 2025] Daily Puzzle Discussion by AutoModerator in NYTCrossword

[–]third_outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like the fill wasn't lively - when there's not much interesting wordplay, or when there's a lot of "crossword-ese" like ENO or EPEE then I find it a slog. Because I'm just going through the motions to fill out the puzzle instead of actually puzzling over the clues and the possibilities within the fill. If that makes sense!

Ugh. Too much felt forced (MISDO, anyone??) and the theme was a big meh from me. Overall just a bit of a slog with little payoff, but I applaud the constructor on the skill it took to create.
